Rehomed

‼️No need to telephone, you need to attend the kennels to rehome. All information contained in this post

🐶 Trudy is a female Cockapoo who is approx 1 year old. Sadly she was admitted as a stray therefore we have no history.
We have found Trudy to be very friendly with people and other dogs once she gets to know you as she is initially timid and scared with being in the kennels. She walks well on the lead. She has been quiet, clean and non-destructive in her kennel.
Due to being timid with strangers she’s not suitable to be homed with young children at this time.

🐶How do I rehome?
-We open 10am-1pm weekdays, 10am-12pm Saturday and closed Sundays.
***Bank holidays 10am-12pm
-You need to attend the kennels to rehome, we DO NOT reserve.
-There may be visitors waiting from before opening.
-Visitors will chose their dog in order of arrival (provided they have valid photo ID and we feel they are suitable).
-Visitors do not need to stand at the gate of the kennels, they are welcome to wait in their car and staff will be available from early morning to speak to them.

Rehoming fee for adults is £80.
Rehoming fee for puppies is £120.

A dog licence must also be applied for (we do this at the time of rehoming) licence free for over 65s with no other dogs, £5 for those on benefits or £12.50.

Kennels are situated at 40 Tobercorran Road, Downpatrick BT30 8HU

**We are a council dog pound and we work very hard to do the best for dogs in our care despite limited funding**

**Home Checks**
We do not complete home checks as there is no funding or resources provided for this. If we are concerned about a particular person or dog we can ask the dog warden to complete a home check prior to rehoming but there is no capacity for the dog warden to complete a large volume of these as they have their normal workload and duties.
ID is taken from each person wishing to rehome a dog, the dog is then microchipped and licenced to the person supplying ID.
We have been doing this for 23 years, we DO NOT just hand a dog out to someone who isn’t suitable even if they are the first person there, many visitors are guided and even refused where necessary when they are unsuitable for a particular dog.

**Spaying/neutering**
We complete spays/neuters when we are provided with funding to do so. This has kindly been provided by Dogs Trust in recent years. When dogs are spayed/neutered under our care they can be rehomed immediately unless our vet advises to hold them due to medical issues. The scheme is not perfect but it has allowed many dogs to be spayed/neutered that otherwise wouldn’t of been and from that perspective it has been a massive success. We feel many dogs recover better in a home than in kennels and for this reason do not hold dogs longer than necessary.

❗️**Facebook comments**❗️
Derogatory comments made against the kennels and/or their processes/policies will not be tolerated. We do the best we can in a very challenging environment and DO NOT have the time to debate with commenters on Facebook about the reasons we do things the way we do especially when they can’t even take time to read the page to establish we are a dog pound. Therefore any derogatory comments around home checks, spaying, etc. will result in the user facing a permanent ban from the page.

Adopt A Senior Pet Month

A lot of rehoming centres around the Whole of Northern Ireland have pets from different ages. During the month of November, we would like to celebrate the senior pets.
Senior pets may be in centres after finding themselves homeless for several reasons:
• Change of owners Circumstances
• Owner taken into Hospital.
• Owner passed away.
With Senior Pets the new potential owner should be aware of what financial commitments they may encounter. However most rehoming centres will ensure that the animals have had a health check - Dental, spay/neuter etc.
Even though most senior pets would be looked over when in kennels, they provide new owners with companionship and a lot of love.
Senior pets are often already trained, calmer in demeanour and less demanding compared to younger pets. The new owners will also know what they getting as the animals is fully grown and their temperament and personality should be fully developed.
By offering a senior pet a home, the new owners are giving them a second chance for a happy life.

Molly will need No introduction to all our clients. She has been coming into the clinic with Cahir for quite a few years. She always loved going for her lunchtime walks up the Promenade before coming back to the clinic for our afternoon consults. She would happily sit and receive treats or pets from her fan club (Clients).

Its with great sadness that we make you all aware that Molly has crossed the Rainbow bridge. I'm sure your all with us when we pass on our condolences to Cahir & his family.🌈💔

Clients often ask should you spay your dog if you are not planning to breed them❓

One of the main reasons why we spay bi***es, is due to the fact they can develop something known as a Pyometra.

- What is a Pyometra?
A pyometra also known as Pyo, is an infection of the uterus(womb). It's a common condition in female dogs that havent been spayed and requires urgent Veterinary treatment.
Each time a female dog has a heat she undergoes all the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, this is regardless of whether she becomes pregnant or not. The changes in the uterus that occur during each heat makes infection more likely with age. This is why spaying your dog is recommended at a early age.

-What are the symptoms of Pyometra? These may include:
Vomiting
Off their food
Drinking more than usual
Discharge from v***a
Lethargy (low energy)
Collapse

-How is pyometra Diagnosed?
The vet will be able to diagnose your dog based on her symptoms, an examination and an ultrasound scan of her womb. The vet may also carry out blood tests to determine the extent of illness with the infection.

- What is the treatment?
Most dogs will require surgery to remove the infected womb

The sooner your dog is treated, the better her chance of recovery. Unfortunately, her chances of recovery are lower if she is old, very unwell, or if her pyometra has been developing for a while.

Please contact us if you are worried your dog is showing symptoms of a pyometra as it is an emergency and quicker treatment will prove a better outcome.
