Hello, and welcome to Acomystic Spiny Mice Mousery! I am a small breeder of Egyptian Spiny Mice located near Seattle, WA. These sweet little guys are also known as Cairo Spiny Mice, Common Spiny Mice, Arabian Spiny Mice, or Acomys Cahirinus. They are omnivores, and slightly bigger than regular fancy mice, with golden fur with circular white markings on their bellies, under their large black eyes, and behind their big, widely spaced ears. They are called "Spiny Mice" because they have dark, quill-like furs running down their back, which are stiff but not spikey like hedgehogs. However, their skin is very fragile and their tails are easily detached, so they must be handled with care. They are curious, energetic, and are less skittish than other mouse and mouse-like species, and are very social, so females must be kept in same s*x groups. Males may fight, so they can be kept alone, but like regular fancy mice, he would need a lot of enrichment and sources of entertainment to keep him happy. As pets, they are relatively easy to care for, although they do need an appropriate enclosure, enrichment, and a high protein diet. They live up to five years in captivity, which is significantly longer than the two year lifespan of a common fancy mouse. Additionally, Spiny Mice do not have a distinct smell like fancy mice do. Even male Spinies are relatively odor free. Some precautions to take are that they are very small, gentle creatures that must be handled carefully so are not a good choice for small children. However, they make a great starter pet for older children, people living in apartments, and anyone who adores small rodents and would like something more exotic than regular mice. If you are interested in taking a Spiny Mouse (or a group of females) home, then please send me a message on Facebook messenger. I focus on breeding for great health and friendly temperament, and I absolutely believe in quality over quantity, so I will not always have mice available, but I will gladly add you to the waitlist. The gestation periods for Spinies are almost double that of other mice and rats. Additionally, litters are very small, usually around 1-4 pups per litter. Pups will be ready to be adopted out at 6 weeks old. Please be patient! I do not over breed my mice, and due to these characteristics, Spinies will not always be available to adopt. I do not deliver my mice, and pickup is in Kent, WA. I look forward to introducing you to my Spinies, and I hope to provide the best quality Spiny Mice possible. Thank you!!! 🐁
