Found an interesting study during the week:

"Altered gut microbiome composition in children with refractory epilepsy after ketogenic diet"
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30007242/

In short, they shifted 20 patients suffering drug-resistant epilepsy to a keto (ZERO CARB) diet. As well as a shift in biome, they found that after 6 months, 2 patients were seizure-free, 3 had ≥ 90% seizure reduction, 5 had a reduction of 50-89%, and 10 had < 50% reduction.

A large review of keto diets in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy concluded the same thing - keto definitely seems to help.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24808888/

Even in infants - "After being on keto diet treatment for a week, 64% of epileptic infants showed an obvious improvement, with a 50% decrease in seizure frequency. Gut microbiota structure in epileptic infants differed dramatically from that in healthy infants".

IMAGINE the relief in those parents?!

This known, you'd be forgiven for wondering how high-carb, chemically preserved kibble would be GOOD for dogs with this condition?

In fact, when studies show high-carb diets exasperate cancer, obesity, pancreatitis and early-stage kidney disease in dogs, you really have to wonder if these high-carb diets promoted by the Mars/Nestlé funded veterinary industry (and not a single, independent canine nutritionist outside of it) are actually GOOD for anything in little meat eaters...

One of the best, most universal ways to successfully deal with out of control dog behavior is to teach you dog a "Super Sit". If your dog will reliably and promptly Sit-Stay when you ask, it means you've got control. Of course, the real work is troubleshooting this skill so it works in very distracting or exciting environments.

Here's a handout that breaks down the step-by-step process of teaching a Super Sit and building the reliability you need to keep your dog under control in any situation.

And if you're interested in learning more about dealing with out of control dog behavior problems, you should sign up for our FREE Out of Control Dog Summit, which we'll be hosting starting next week!

New puppy owners: please don't feel in a rush for your pup to accept being left alone.

Western cultures greatly value making our own children independent asap. This is understandable, but doesn't apply to our dogs. Interestingly, other cultures experience a far lower rate of attachment disorders: often (please excuse the generalisations) the cultures with the lowest rates tend to breastfeed for longer, have their child with them at all times, and the most skin-to-skin contact with their child.

The understandable idea of 'I need to leave my pup to make sure they don't get separation anxiety' is highly mistaken. One of the most effective ways to inadvertently create true, debilitating and painful separation anxiety in a dog is to repeatedly leave them regardless of their distress, before they are ready.

A very interesting and sad study (Harlow, 1958) conducted on Rhesus monkeys found that infant monkeys chose to cling onto a furry, fluffy 'mother' monkey (it was a robot) that provided nothing else, over a non-fluffy robot 'mother' monkey that provided only milk. Debatable ethics, yes, but a clear indicator of the importance of physical presence and contact with a primary caregiver over physical needs such as food.

Secure attachments come from having an available, responsive primary caregiver - this means you! This means not ignoring a dog in distress and being attentive to their emotional needs. What we need to do is the opposite to what our intuition and cultural beliefs may tell us. Young puppies that show distress when left alone are not problem dogs: they are normal babies being babies showing baby needs. You are now their primary caregiver and are responsible for meeting those needs.

When you bring your puppy home, don't leave them alone. They have just been separated from their mother and siblings: even when this is done responsibly, it is still incredibly traumatic for them. Your pup has no way of knowing if you are ever going to come back - after all, their own mother and siblings never did. They have learned that the one living thing on whom their very survival depends left them for good, all in one go.

Would we leave a baby alone, ever? Would we also expect them to not be bothered by it?

Let your pup settle in before leaving them. An 8, 12 or 15 week old puppy is too young to be left home alone, full stop. If you are homing a puppy with the intention of going back to work 2 weeks later, don't home a puppy. If you are homing a puppy planning to go out some evenings to see friends and family for a few hours, don't home a puppy.

Young puppies need to feel safe and secure as a priority. You can build up relatively quickly to leaving the room, going to the loo, popping out to the bin or car. But there is NO rush to leave your dog alone before they are ready. You have all the time in the world for this.

NB - this also applies 1000% to all newly homed dogs, especially rescue dogs - including adults.

Please don't think Grain free is a better food for your Poodle.

In early August 2021, researchers from Tufts University published a study indicating peas in dog food may be contributing to diet-associated DCM.
