WHAT IS CONSENT BASED GROOMING AND HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOUR GROOMER WORKS WITH THIS ETHOS

Consent based means listening to and reading the dog to ensure no action is taken against its will. It means asking the dog rather than assuming. Obviously dogs can’t talk. But they communicate constantly and a consent based groomer is looking for these communications so as to adapt to his or her needs. This ensures that no aspect of grooming is confrontational or stressful.

In truth there will always be things dogs would rather not have us do. But need doing. Consent based approaches mean that these things can be approached sensitively in a way the dog can cope with. Reducing the stress and capturing the dog’s trust.

How will you know if your dog groomer works with a consent based ethos?
Well one big clue is that they will only have your dog on site. Consent based groomers on the whole do not have more than one dog or family of dogs together. Larger salons may still offer consent approaches but will ask you to bring your dig at a specified time rather than have all dogs delivered am or pm. They will ask about your dog’s anxiety levels generally at home and likely want to conduct a meet and greet or introductory session to assess your dog’s reactions to the environment

It has been a brilliant first term back for our Intermediate Rally-O class. We have had a great time learning some new signs and have been working on refining our footwork (as well as a few giggles along the way).

Some of the class have even booked onto the next course (starting 4th April @ 8pm) - they clearly don't want to miss out!!

Fancy giving this a go? We have a beginners class that starts at 7pm where we walk you through some basic turns, footwork to set you up nicely on your new Rally-O journey. This class is designed as a great follow on from Puppy class - all you need is some engagement with your dog on the lead and we will show you the rest.

It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce that Hendrix Teal crossed the rainbow bridge today. Col and Sara were by his side, just as he was always by theirs.

Many of us will remember him as the example of behaviour we strived for our own puppies, the calm influence on the most fearful canine companions and the never-full treat thief! (Who could resist the head tilt and being given his paw over and over again!)

Hug your pets a little tighter, give them that extra treat today. They leave paw prints forever on your heart.

Col and Sara will be taking a break for a few days, but if you want to post your favourite picture of Hens or comment with a story about him they would love to read them and know he was so loved.

Rally-O is experiencing a surge in popularity in the dog world.

As one of the first training schools in Norfolk to offer the sport, at Hendrix Teal we are lucky enough to have a trainer with over 10 years experience in competing, training and judging in the sport!

Rally is an excellent way to build rapport with your dog, improve lead walking and at Hendrix Teal we like to have fun to as we learn, but also with monthly competitions things can sometimes get serious too!
