2023: The good 😊 , the bad ☹️ and the ugly 😫. Dog 🐶 breeding as fun as it is has its challenges. This year has been one with many experiences and lessons for Pawprintz Kennel. Estrus and mating: The joy and excitement during estrus (when bitches are in heat), to mating. A lot goes into that too; selecting which male would be sire, number of times to mate, the days to mate and the intervals, anticipating colors and all. Pregnancy: The heartbreak 💔 when there is no pregnancy or the delight of being an expectant breeder with either a heavily pregnant bitch or an almost invisible pregnancy. The anxiety 😬 during the average 60 days wait. And yes, the labor period. What will the delivery method be? CS or natural birth? What happens when there’s a breach? Puppies: On their delivery, are they all well formed? Do they all survive in the womb? Any complications, known and unknown? Whelping: The first few days are literally the longest 😰. Survival of new born puppies is dependent on how these days go. It’s mostly a do or die affair where you could lose all puppies or sustain all puppies, sometimes some casualties here and there, sustain some and lose some. Sales: This topic 😸!!!!!! This is where all the drama is 😹😹😹😹. Middle men/ agents who did no work but want to gain as much as the breeder. Overpricing puppies to potential clients. Wahala no dey end 😂😂🤣🤣. Some clients have no idea of what they want, others are mostly confused. Some don’t do any research on the breed, prices etc but still want you to sell to them at their price😅. A fellow breeder once said, people start to calculate your profit 💵when your puppies survive but never calculate your losses when they die.
