Today, August 28 is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, a day to remember the pets that are no longer with us. Today we honour and share all those beautiful ones who have taken their last journey, to frolic free of pain, waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge. Please feel welcome to share a picture of your angel in the sky in the comments.
The Rainbow Bridge Poem:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Shared from a member of Delco Dawgs:
"To level set, studies have shown that most dogs have the mental abilities of a 2-2.5 year old child. They should be protected just as you would protect a 2 year old child. Don’t give them more trust to keep themselves safe than you would give a two year old. Don’t count on them to “know better” -they don’t!
1. Double leash your dogs when going to and from the vet, pet sitters, grooming and doggie daycare visits. This is a frequent point of loss. Martingale colllars are great at preventing slipped collars.
2. Retractable leashes are a major hazard and should never be used. Dogs can easily find themselves in harm’s way while being walked on a retractable leash. They can’t be recoiled quickly when a threat presents itself allowing your dog to either attack or be attacked. They easily snap and break putting your dog in extreme danger of being lost or killed.
3. We often see social media posts about elderly, blind, deaf or senile dogs that have wandered away from their homes. It’s hearbreaking particularly because this is so easily prevented. Senior or special needs dogs should NEVER be left unattended outside under any circumstances. Full stop! They rely on you to keep them safe. So many are left outside alone to potty and wander out of fenced and unfenced yards and into traffic, into the mouth of foxes or other animals or freeze to death. Often people let them outside, forget they’ve done so and go to bed. When morning rolls around they realize their blind, deaf dog is now missing. It is cruel to allow this to happen to your dog. Keep eyes on them outside at all times. Pay attention!
4. If you do not have a fenced yard it is your responsibility to walk your dog on a leash or tie out on a secured lead (spike or overhead). Your dog might stay within your property lines unattended for 10 years and then one day wander off chasing a squirrel or deer—and never return. This is not their fault. It is your job to keep your pet safe from harm. They are relying on you to do so.
5. Most dogs cannot find their way home once lost. This happens for many reasons. Many dogs aren’t walked enough and don’t know the neighborhoods. Well meaning people see a loose dog and chase it trying to get it to safety. Lost dogs often encounter other unleashed dogs that may be dangerous. Now your pet has been chased out of your neighborhood and cannot find its way back. They will blindly cross major highways, migrate to train tracks, sometimes drown in creeks, starve to death, etc. We do have some stories of miracle dogs that find their way home despite all odds. Those are the exception not the rule. Many never make it home alive.
6. People wrongly assume dogs that run away do so because they were in a bad home. This is simply not true. If unleashed and let out unsecured in an unfenced yard, dogs will inevitably wander, chase wildlife, kids, etc. Again, they have the mental capacity of a two year old. Many of their owners love them very much but they placed too much trust that their dog would not behave like..a dog..and stay put while no one is watching. It is not their fault if they wander off-it’s yours. Take steps to prevent this from happening. “Baby proof” your home and yards to prevent them from escaping.
7. Once lost for a day or so, your dog stops behaving as they did in their safe, warm and loving home. They quickly go into survival mode as they literally fight to stay alive. Scared, they become frenzied and will stop recognizing your face and voice. They will run from and perhaps even bite you if you spot and attempt to grab them. They will dart in and out of traffic putting themselves in extreme danger. Don’t put them in a situation of fearing for their lives.
8. If your dog is always escaping the yard, you must quickly figure out a solution to prevent this from happening. Close off gaps in fencing/gates, block off holes that they’ve dug near fence lines, etc. it is your job to provide a safe environment when your dog is outside. If your child kept escaping the yard, you would certainly never leave them alone outside and you’d find a way to prevent it from happening again. Just like a toddler, your pet is relying on you to keep them safe.
9. Electric fences fail OFTEN! Do not leave your dog outside unattended. We often end up tracking and trapping dogs with that have escaped electric fences.
10. Do not leave your dogs unattended in cars or tied up outside of stores. These are frequent points of loss. Your dog is safer sitting at home alone than being put at risk waiting in the car while you run errands."
