Our cycled filter media can be purchased through our eBay shop

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394732324302?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=8hwcqixntba&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=8hwcqixntba&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

We “feed” our media with a mix of pure ammonia, fish food and plant matter, this means that not only will your media be colonised with beneficial nitrifying bacteria it will also be colonised with all of the other microscopic life needed to fully break down particles of uneaten fish food and plant matter and convert it to mulm (the brown sludgy stuff in the bottom of your filter). But what is mulm? (Apart from the brown sludgy stuff in your filter) all the critters that live in mulm (or detritus if you are more used to that term) do an absolutely critical job in maintaining the water quality in your aquarium! They oxidise organic compounds and ammonia to relatively harmless gasses and nitrate. If you still aren’t convinced the mulm does a vital job in an aquarium then look no further than the good old farm pond, it is a hole in the ground with fish in it, no filter, relatively small, it doesn’t rely on rivers or streams running in and out of it to keep the water clean, but what is the bottom covered in……….mulm

I have been asked why people shouldn’t just buy “bacteria in a bottle” and use that to cycle their filter

media? What a lot of people don’t understand (even veterans of the hobby) is that filter media is a thriving ecosystem, there is a whole host of other microscopic life living in on and around your filter media living in symbiosis to convert all the undesirable stuff in your tank to much more desirable stuff, good filter media looks dirty! But it isn’t dirt, waste, muck, sludge or any of the other synonyms for anything that doesn’t look nice it is the home to some of the most important organisms that filter your water! So how can the bottle of clear liquid that contains “beneficial bacteria” do the same job? My personal opinion is that it can’t possibly replace the months that it takes to establish all of the separate cultures and habitats needed for the filtration ecosystem.

Even if you don’t choose to buy our media you do now have the information you need to make an informed decision and you know what to look for to check the progress of your “filtration ecosystem”
