We use reward-based training to teach our chickens tricks. โญ ๐Ÿ“

This means we give our chickens something THEY want (a reward) when they do something WE want.

For example, we give our chicken a treat (something she wants) when she pecks a ball (something we want).

Our chicken soon learns that if she repeats this behavior, she will get a reward. ๐Ÿช ๐Ÿ”

This is the fastest and most fun way to teach chickens anything!

The Coop. A special place to be. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ“

This popped up in my Facebook memories today. I originally posted it 3 years ago today.
I've reposted it a couple of times since then but it still explains my relationship with the Grumps better than anything.

Coop:
Noun - A structure to house poultry
Example "Put the chickens in their COOP"

Around here "heading out to the coop" is a fairly common saying. Its synonymous with "be back in an hour" or "I'm going to unwind" or "I really can't people right now".

My coop has played an important role in my life over the past few years. It was the first project that my then boyfriend, Don and I worked on together. We built it from the ground up. It was not always smooth! Lol it took longer than anticipated but when it was complete it would withstand any predator (and most natural disasters!) I learned that my guy was thorough and he cared.
When I saw him saying goodnight to each little fluffy butt on their first scary evening in their new big coop I knew I had a keeper.

Sitting in the coop talking to the chickens has been my thing ever since. It's my place to think or to just go blank and enjoy watching the chickens live their lives. Not every memory from the coop is a good one. I've held many dying chickens in that coop. I've found some dead with no warning that anything was wrong. At first that made me feel so inadequate that I hadn't noticed and I felt that I must have missed my opportunity to fix them. I've realized after many years that you can't always cure them and the best you can do is to feed them a healthy diet, with lots of clean water, exercise, love, sunshine and a safe place to run to. Which, ironically, is the best you can do for yourself as well.

One cold December evening I was in the coop tending to a sick chicken. I was feeling guilty that I hadn't noticed her because I hadn't been around much. I'd been with my dad as he wasn't well. He was nearing the end of his fight with Alzheimer's disease. Don came out to the coop to get me. I could tell from the look in his eyes that something horrible had happened. I shook my head and said "No, I'm not leaving" because I knew that when I stepped out that door my life was going to be different. As I stood there in the coop holding a chicken Don told me that my dad was gone.

A few years later when I quit my longtime, pack a day smoking habit and I was struggling through a craving I would head to the coop. The smells there were more intense than when I had smoked. Dirt, wood shavings, dust, chicken food and p**p all mingled together. It was my little slice of heaven and a few deep breaths gave me the strength I needed to get past that urge.

A couple of years ago I got home from work and Don told me that Miss Kitty -one of my older girls-wasn't doing very well. As I rushed to get my coop boots and coat on I was firing questions at him to try to determine what might be wrong. Is she fluffed up? Is she moving around? Have you seen her eat? P**p? His answer to everything was "You'll just have to look at her". I was more than a little annoyed with him by the time I got to the coop and flung the door open. There was Miss Kitty standing in her Condo cage looking very healthy to me. I turned back to Don and he said look closer. There, hanging from a ribbon draped around her neck was a ring. I turned back to him again and he was on one knee.

And so the happy memories in my coop layer onto the sad ones and make them bearable and they all spin into a thread that weaves my story. For me "coop" is not a noun...its not a person, place or thing...

Coop:
Verb - a state of being
Coop on.

The Chicken Tricks Team consists of 3 talented chickens (Gerdy, Peepy and Dancer) and their human caretaker (Jain).

GERDY ๐Ÿ”
(Pekin bantam hen)

She's fluffy and cute. She's only little, but she has a BIG personality!

She is very curious and always wants to be where the action is.

PEEPY ๐Ÿ”
(Japanese bantam hen)

A little sweetheart. A bit of a worrier but super smart.

She's always watching Jain to see if there is something she needs to do.

DANCER ๐Ÿ”
(Australorp hen)

Not much worries Dancer. She has an even temperament.

She is an older chicken who is just starting to learn tricks. Dancer proves that you can teach an old chicken new tricks!

JAIN ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ
(Australian female)

Jain has always had chickens (and loved them) but never trained them except to come when called.

For most of her life, she has trained horses for a living using reward-based methods. A few years ago, she decided to try the same method with her chickens.

Wow! She discovered that her little feathered friends learned just as fast as horses and dogs!

She now spends most days finding out what it's possible to teach a chicken. And most days, she is amazed! ๐Ÿคฉ ๐Ÿ“

TIPS ON TEACHING A CHICKEN TO DANCE ๐Ÿ“

Firstly your dancing chicken needs to be one from your flock that already loves to scratch. It is much easier to teach a chicken a trick that she likes to do naturally. ๐Ÿคฉ

The chicken in this video (recently renamed 'Dancey Pants') spends most of her day scratching around the garden.

โœ… I started by teaching her that she gets a reward when she scratches.
โœ… I also taught her to walk onto the board.
โœ… Then I rewarded her when she scratched ON the board.

At first, she would only scratch once. Then I asked for two scratches before she got a reward and then three scratches. I am working on building this trick, so she scratches ten times.

If I wanted to add more to this trick, I could put a costume on her and make a fancy dancing platform. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’ƒ

Which trick should you teach your chicken first? โญ๐Ÿ“

It is much easier to build on behaviors that your chicken already does rather than trying to teach them something completely new.

Watch your chicken over the next few days and see if there is anything they do that might form the beginning of a new trick. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ“

For example, Dancer loves to scratch. So it was easy to turn her scratching into a dance (hence her name).

Gerdy loves to peck things, so I'm teaching her to peck a bell. Later on, we will work on playing (pecking) a toy piano and other pecking tricks.

Peepy is a fantastic flyer. She loves flying up on things. So I started by teaching her to fly to my knee while sitting down. I then taught her to fly to my arm.

Most chickens have their favorite things to do, and it's easier to use these as a starting point for tricks because your chicken will already be keen to do it. ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ“

TRAINING MORE THAN ONE CHICKEN ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“

When you first start training your chickens, it is best to train just ONE at a time.

They will all want to get involved, and it can be confusing for the chickens, and you, to try and train several chickens together.

It is better to start by training each chicken separately to do the trick well before working with several chickens together.

Have a separate area where you can work with just one chicken. Being on one side of a fence works well so that your student chicken can still see their friends.

But you might find that you have an audience lined up to watch what you two are doing ๐Ÿ˜
