I received a message from my students regarding a cat that was hit by a car in front of ISATU. When I checked, I immediately recognized Tiago because I was the one who gave him his name. I have a deadline to meet at that point, but I also want to get Tiago to the vet right away. Hemeirey posted in Iloilo Cat Lovers for help hoping someone could rescue him since I am torn between. Actually, she and her friends never left Tiago's side the entire time while am looking for a crate. I reached out for help in our group chat with various Animal Welfare Advocates here in the city, but most weren't available, so I decided to bring him to PetvalueCare Vet Clinic.

Ms. Di Bi Ka contacted me regarding the cat posted in ICL since she had an idea that I work at ISATU, and I told her that we were on our way. She also said that she shared our post with their team, and they can and will help. I was too preoccupied to check my inbox before, during, or after Tiago's admission.

Late that evening, Hemeirey messaged me regarding an ICL post in which a particular FB user named Ilonggo Aspins thanked Ms. Di Bi Ka for rescuing Tiago. Hemeirey posted in response to refute the assertion. It is beyond my control that this post sparked different responses from people and AW Advocate friends who had prior knowledge of Tiago's case.

There was a misunderstanding between Ms. Di Bi Ka and their Ilonggo Aspins team, which I believe has already been resolved. Nevertheless, I appreciate their assistance in helping to raise money for Tiago's medical expenses, which amounted to Php 1,320 and were paid to PetValuecare Vet Clinic.

At the other end of the spectrum, we are all animal welfare advocates with common goals.

Tiago is doing well as of this writing. He's determined to have a second chance at life. He will be discharged in two days, and we are asking for any assistance with his bill, aftercare stuff, and medicines. [see the comment section for the running bills].

Ear Marking Cats After Spay or Neuter Surgery⁣⁣

One of the most common requests we get from fur parents when it comes to ear-marking their companion cat/s is: “Pwede ba na hindi na lang lagyan ng notch o tattoo?” ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The short answer is yes. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The long answer is yes, BUT we highly recommend getting it done for your companion cat/s - even if they only stay indoors - to prevent them from being operated on again unnecessarily. Please remember that cats are great escape artists and curious by nature; thus, an earmark would easily show their spayed/neutered status if they get lost or go missing. Stray and feral cats, on the other hand, are required to get notched. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Ear-marking is especially important for TNVR initiatives. Case in point, during a recent TNVR event, one of our veterinarians took longer than usual to locate a female cat’s reproductive organs. After thoroughly checking the cat for a while longer, our veterinarian announced that the cat had already been spayed as there were no longer any reproductive organs present. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We have also had cases where adopted and/or rescued cats were brought here to our Boni clinic only to find out, once they are opened, that they are already spayed. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Situations like these not only disrupt the flow of surgery scheduled for the day but also subject the cats to risks from the anesthesia and additional pain from being opened up again. As animal welfare advocates, we make it our responsibility to prevent these occurrences from happening. ⁣⁣

Notching/tattooing is safe and painless for cats, and it is done while they are sedated and anesthetized. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Although we don’t enforce ear-marking indoor cats, we still recommend that this be done to all the cats that come to our clinic for kapon. This is why it is required that guardians choose between notch and tattoo upon pre-registration. ⁣⁣

Ear-marking doesn’t take away from the beauty of the cats. Their notch or tattoo shows that they are cared for and that their well-being was given priority. ⁣

You may think since your cat is male, there is no real reason to neuter because you won't ever have the risk of kittens. While that may be true, there is someone, somewhere dealing with kittens because of your cat

We see SO MANY male cats posted on our local lost and found sites; owners with broken hearts looking for their precious furbaby. 😕 Cats that actually had a home and someone to take care of them. Instead, they may become part of the homeless community cat population.

🐾 It appears that a large portion of the general public does not realize the huge impact neutering can have for their pet and the community as a whole. 🐾

You may think since your cat is male, there is no real reason to neuter because you won't ever have the risk of kittens. While that may be true, there is someone, somewhere dealing with kittens because of your cat❗️

This is obviously not your cat's fault. Your male is just doing what he was made to do. 🐈 He will find a way out of your house during breeding season. He will not show up for days/weeks and this is why. 🛑

Males will travel up to 5 miles to find a female in heat. Your precious pet may or may not return. If he returns, he could be a bit battered. You see, he may have to battle other males for that female kitty. He has to fight for food while he's out there. Fighting is the most common way fatal feline diseases are spread. In his travels, he can meet predators (human and other animals). He may be crossing many roads which means he runs the risk of being hit by a car. Someone may pick him up thinking he's an owned stray and never report him as missing.

Allow me to explain. There are millions upon millions of cats living in the wild around the world. There just aren’t enough homes for all of them and certainly not enough understanding people knowing the ways of feral cats.

When I see your pleas of “Oh don’t release him back.”, “Why don’t you just find him a home?” or expressing your concern of how inhumane this entire situation is, all I can do is shake my head.

I love that you’re concerned, but with these kinds of statements, they tell me you have never volunteered at a shelter or rescue. Once exposed to the ugly truth and overwhelming situation of not just kittens flowing into shelters, but the need for fosters, medical treatment and supplies is just the tip of the iceberg, perhaps it will open your eyes a bit.

As I mentioned, there just aren’t enough homes. The majority of kittens in shelters come from feral colonies. We need to stop the uncontrollable breeding! TNR does this!

TNR helps cats from breeding, and the prevention of numerous cancers and many other medical issues. Far too many mothers die during the birthing process. Far too many kittens are born with birth defects from an unhealthy environment and/or inbreeding.

Four month old kittens getting pregnant, with the possibility of giving birth every three months. That is no way to live. So we do the best we can, which is providing neutering and vaccinations.

Within a few weeks you will see the improvement of their over all physical being and their attitude.

As far as returning them, they are being returned to THEIR home, unless deemed unsafe. There are countless volunteers out every day caring for and monitoring colonies, while also providing TNR.

With 1.4 million cats euthanized annually, what are you doing to help this situation?

“Fixed” animals are healthier and can live longer than their “unfixed” cousins? Neutered males are less likely to mark their territory by spraying. And without testicles, they don’t get testicular cancer. Spayed females have less chance of getting ovarian or mammary tumors, among other diseases.

Letting just one female and her offspring (and their offspring) breed can add as many as 420,000 cats to the world in only 7 years. Yes we love cats, but that’s just too many! Even worse, fewer than 50,000 of those cats is likely to find a home and end up in the streets.

TNVR (trap-neuter-vaccinate-return) humane method to manage community cats including stray and/or feral populations.

Last November 19 several cats were trapped, neutered, and adopted in Iloilo Sports Complex. This is to control the strays in the area as well as give another chance to live a life each one of them deserved.

It wouldn't be a successful operation without the help of Dr. Fundal and ISC staff, and Dr. Tabuada and Provincial Veterinary Office staff. Thank you so much for considering the welfare of these stray cats.
