In the wake of the sub-zero temps this week, take a look at these tips below to help keep your furry friends safe this weekend! ❄️

⏱Limit Outdoor Time:
Minimize the time your pets spend outdoors to 10-15 minutes during extremely cold weather. Prolonged exposure to low temperatures can be harmful.

🏠Provide Shelter:
If your pets stay outdoors, make sure they have access to a dry and insulated shelter. The shelter should protect them from wind, rain, and snow. Ensure it is raised off the ground to prevent cold and dampness.

🧺Warm Bedding:
Inside, provide your pets with warm and comfortable bedding. This is especially important for pets that spend a lot of time lying down, such as older dogs and cats.

🐾Protect Paws:
The cold pavement, ice, and snow can be harsh on their paws. Consider using pet booties to protect their feet. Wipe their paws and belly after they've been outside to remove any salt or de-icing chemicals, as these can be toxic.

🥶Monitor for Signs of Hypothermia:
Watch for signs of hypothermia, such as shivering, lethargy, and weakness. If you notice any of these signs, bring your pet indoors immediately and contact your veterinarian.

❄️Check for Frostbite:
Pay attention to areas with less fur coverage, such as the ears, nose, and paws, for signs of frostbite. If you suspect frostbite, contact your veterinarian for guidance.

♨️Indoor Safety:
Keep indoor spaces pet-friendly. Avoid exposing them to drafts and ensure they have a warm spot to rest. Be cautious with space heaters and other heating devices, ensuring they are pet-safe and inaccessible.

🚰Stay Hydrated:
Cold weather can be dehydrating. Make sure your pets have access to fresh water at all times. Consider using a heated water bowl to prevent water from freezing.

By taking these precautions, you can help ensure your pets remain safe, healthy, and comfortable during colder weather. If you have specific concerns or questions about your pet's well-being in cold weather, it's always best to consult with your veterinarian.
