“It’s just a pet, I don’t need health testing & temperment testing because I won’t be showing it!”
Stop saying that until you’ve had to euthanize your 6 month old puppy from severe hip dysplasia.
Stop saying that until you’ve had to behaviorally euthanize a puppy or dog that was doomed from the start. Poor genetics, placing dogs in homes that have no idea how to properly raise these power house breeds with little to no breeder support.
Stop saying that until you’ve spent THOUSANDS in training trying to help your reactive puppy or dog.
Stop saying that until you’ve not met your dogs genetically wired traits/characteristics because you didn’t fully understand what you were getting and it’s started biting, reacting and lashing out.
There are so many more scenarios but just the ones I see most commonly & it’s absolutely heart breaking.
Genetics matter. Health testing matters. ETHICAL BREEDERS MATTER. Do your research… Shelters are full, the dog industry is TIRED y’all. Ethical breeders spend years carefully selecting pairings, raising their pups with puppy culture (look into that), taking applications for homes and carefully selecting families with the ability to learn, prior breed knowledge or close to home to aid in anyway possible. This is not to say that good dogs don’t come from a shelter if you got a lucky one BUT it’s also to say why did they have to be there to begin with?
