Getting the barn ready for another birthday 🥳

Last year, after 17 years, I had to have a company out to empty my septic tank. With 5 people living here, a tank going that long is Unheard of. (Btw no problem developed it just was way past time)

When the men took the lid off they said that it was the healthiest, happiest colony of septic "bugs" they had ever seen and to keep doing whatever we had been because they'd never seen a tank this great.

(This has a point-I promise)

I don't hardly ever use bleach in anything in my house and I throw the Rid X in the toilet every 4-5 months and use septic safe paper.

This, paired with a wildlife expert talking about the importance of parasites for wildlife to have a robust immune system, got me thinking about the high prevalence of ulcers and skin allergies in the modern horse nowadays.

The more studies are done on humans the more we realize just how very important a flourishing gut microbome is for them.

Food for thought:

Are we tending our pastures so diligently that we are taking out plants, etcetera that are important for keeping a equine digestive system in balance?

If wildlife has to have a certain amount of parasites for their immune system to be sturdy, do more domestic animals also?

Is changing their water and scrubbing their buckets constantly part of the problem because they miss what they would have gotten out of natural water sources? Is all that chlorine hard on the gut bacteria? (By the way, chlorine disappates in the sun after several hours)

Why do so many horses get out of whack?

(FYI, don't take this to mean never deworm or let your buckets be filthy)

But maybe we need to clamor for more studies on these creatures we adore so much.

This is a thinking article, not an advisory one. If horses are good for anything they should certainly provoke our thoughts and our desire to research.

These Holland Lop bunnies are almost ready to go to new homes. They are very sweet pets for kiddos 🥰 They are easy keepers, potty-trained, and have been handled by a lot of kids.
