Do I Go Home Today? This page is dedicated to my father, David A. Child, who loved dogs with all his heart. "Within th I live in Warm Springs, GA and I love animals.

The profile picture is the dog I adopted from Animal Control in Columbus on July 26, 2011. Please consider adopting a dog from your local shelter and giving them a loving place to go home to. They wait every day and wonder, "Do I Go Home Today?"

Recently we responded to a difficult call. Nearly 200 animals were living in deplorable conditions in a Heard County home. The Humane Society of Harris County, and many other rescues, came to the aid of these dogs. All total we took in 17 animals, including a mother and her six-week-old puppies.

Our staff and some of our fosters worked tirelessly to get these dogs vetted, cared for, and ready to go to fosters or the shelter.

Several dogs have medical issues that need to be addressed. Kiki, a wonderful German Shelpherd will require the amputation of her front left leg as the damage to it is too severe to correct. Others will be spayed or neutered this week. Keep your eyes posted on the HSHC website for these dogs as they become available for adoption.

Please help Amisia by sharing this post. She has been in foster care for four months without a single adoption inquiry.😢 This beautiful merle girl is a 45 lb Catahoula mix and she is one year old. She was born both blind and deaf, the result of a genetic mutation that often occurs when two merle parents are bred to each other. Despite her disabilities, Amisia is a confident, loving pup. Since she was born this way, she doesn’t know any other life than she one she lives and she is perfectly content. Amisia has a joyful nature and she is always enthusiastic about her toys and treats. She is full of kisses and she greets new dogs gently and appropriately. Like any other puppy, Amisia is quite bouncy and playful so she would do best with dogs similar in size. Amisia is crate-trained and good on a leash. She requires a secure, fully fenced yard where she can safely explore the outdoors and stretch her legs. Amisia’s sense of smell is incredible and she is highly treat motivated. Blind/deaf dogs can learn “touch” signals and Amisia would be a great candidate for that type of training. Though she will require some extra time and effort on the part of her humans, seeing her flourish despite her disabilities will be incredibly rewarding.

Amisia is fully vetted -- spayed, microchipped, heartworm negative, and current on her vaccinations and deworming. You can apply to adopt her by submitting an application at www.sohfga.com.

***ADOPTION PENDING***Before you apply to adopt, please make sure that your spouse and all members of your family are on board with adding a new furry family member. Toffee had an adoption scheduled but it fell through because one spouse didn’t actually want a new dog. Canceling at the last minute wastes our valuable time and yours, and most importantly, causes a delay in the dog finding it’s forever home.

That being said…Toffee is still looking for her forever family. She is one of four young Terrier mixes who came to us from an overcrowded shelter in north Georgia last week. They all look similar so it’s obvious they are siblings. Clearly they had been neglected in a backyard their entire lives because they are all extremely shy and stayed glued together in a pile for their entire stay at the shelter. When they were delivered to us last week they were terrified and covered in fleas, p*e, p**p and vomit thanks to carsickness from the long ride. All four siblings are in different foster homes now and they are coming around beautifully. They have been fully vetted and cleaned up and they are just adorable.

Toffee weighs 11 pounds. She is full grown at one year old. She adores her foster mom and takes every step she takes. Toffee loves to be in your lap or laying nearby a human. She is needy so a home where someone is around for most of the day would be best. She is doing well with walking on a leash now so a fenced yard would be nice but isn’t necessarily required. Toffee would do best in a quiet home with one or two adults and at least one other welcoming dog. She is not a good candidate for a home with lots of activity and she would not do well around young children at this point. She is just beginning her journey of becoming a beloved house pet instead of a neglected yard dog. Toffee will need continue patience and training but it will be so rewarding to see her blossom. You can see more photos and apply to adopt her at www.SOHFGA.com.

***ADOPTION PENDING***Denver was abandoned earlier this week, left in a crate overnight outside of a local Animal Shelter with a typed letter from his previous owner stating that she was moving and couldn’t take him along. This handsome Cocker Spaniel mix is 1.5 years old and he weighs 36 pounds. Denver is long, lean and larger than an average Cocker. He sort of resembles a Clumber Spaniel with his big jowls. Whatever his DNA, he is a lovely boy with a stellar temperament. He is friendly, easygoing and affectionate. Denver gets along great with other dogs and he would likely do well in a home with children. He is crate-trained and pretty good on a leash though he does need reminders not to pull. Denver’s fluffy coat is magnificent but he sheds a lot, so he needs someone willing to brush him regularly. This boy may have been discarded by his first family but his new one is getting a treasure of a dog. See more photos and apply to adopt Denver at www.SOHFGA.com.
