If you accidentally stepped on your dog’s tail, you may wonder whether your dog will understand if you apologize to him.
Do dogs apologize to each other? A study has revealed some interesting findings after observing dogs undergo conflict and reconciliation efforts.
The results seem to suggest that, after conflict, dogs appear "to apologize" and the effort seems to be made for the purpose of restoring peace.
It's as if its meant to reduce any stress associated with uncertainty about future conflicts, points out Kristie Miller, a research fellow in philosophy at the University of Sydney, Australia in an article on Psychology Today.
While we may not know whether dogs understand apologies in the same we do, one thing is for sure: it certainly feels good to tell our dogs "I'm sorry," especially when your dog licks you back as if to say: "We're still good my friend, no worries!"

My Canine Learning
I have been a lifelong lover of dogs. But it wasn’t until I rescued a fear-aggressive little poodle mix named Bailey that I became serious about dog behavior and training.
To help my dog build confidence, I began by taking Bailey to classes at my local humane society for obedience, agility, nosework and tricks.
Through attending many classes, workshops and behavior seminars, I have gained better understanding about dogs and their behaviors. I also realize that having “fun” is very important in learning especially for both the teacher and learner. When my dog is having fun during a training session, he would forget that he is worried in the new environment.
I have seen many shy and fearful dogs suffering during training sessions because they don’t feel safe and enjoyable. It is my goal to help the owners of shy and fearful dogs to understand how their dogs feel and help them find the “fun” again in training and in life.
I offers behavior consultations and private training in Marin & Sonoma. My specialties include basic obedience, puppy training/socialization, tricks, body conditioning exercise and behavior modification for fear-aggressive dogs.
