Breeders who use Fi Nano microchips, this is important for you to know since it just happened to me. A puppy, placed in a guardian home, reached out and requested to change the information on the chip registration, and when the email came through to me, I declined it, as, per our contract, ALL of the dogs information, ownership, etc, remain in the breeders name, until the dogs contract is completed, spayed/neutered, and transferred ownership to the guardian. I have provided this information, contract etc to Fi, and they have decided that a dog who lives in anyone’s home under any circumstances, full time, should have the caretakers information on the chip solely, as “the breeder will always be listed as a secondary”. Sounds all fine and dandy, until you reach out to animal control, in the case that the dog goes missing, is found, relinquished etc, ONLY the OWNER on the chip can pick the dog up. Upon further investigation, after I requested Fi’s terms and conditions (which I requested but did not receive), I found that there are none pertaining to their chips, there is not even a policies and procedures. I found another concerning loop hole in Fi, pertaining to rescued/fosters/adoptees. Fi requires the foster to be listed as an owner, and only the foster is in charge of changing the ownership once the dog is adopted, and is purely on a “in good faith” basis. This is my first and last litter I will be using Fi, which is an absolute shame, but as an ethical breeder who keeps tight tabs, contracts etc on my puppies, I am left feeling powerless, betrayed, and scared.
Attached is the email response from Fi, giving me 24 hours to accept the transefer, or they will do so on my behalf.
Also attached is a screenshot of a portion of their article about fosters/adopters, which they have continued to call my guardian contract, even tho they are nothing alike, and my contract greatly and repeatedly specifify that the puppy is my property solely, until the terms of their breeding contract are complete.
If anyone could help me, I will take whatever I can get. If you are a breeder, or rescue, and are concerned or curious about this, I highly recommend contacting them, and asking these same kinds of questions. How are we protected as the purchaser of the chips, as the rightful owners of the puppies we have produced, until we place them with their new owners.
