Finding the words has not been the problem, but finding the energy to share the passing of our last frenchie puppy was a challenge.
The reality of a malnourished mum who was covered in fleas that were also feeding on her newborn puppies, who was unable to breathe when laying on her side trying to nourish her babies with what little milk she had, really exhausted our emotional reserves.
The reality of backyard breeding is exactly this. When people lack knowledge on what responsible breeding looks like, the animals suffer. In this case a family of eight, swiftly succumbed to the inadequate care they received. Leaving just mum remaining.
Next time you see cute puppies on Gumtree, remember our family of frenchies and the tragedy of those that dont make it to the point of sale.
The only thing that can prevent their suffering are the choices you make.
It’s been a physically and emotionally draining three days with our frenchie mama and her babies.
When they came to us, they were suffering from “Fading Puppy Syndrome” which is a cute term for, the pups are critical and there are a myriad of reasons why this could be occurring.
It is believed that the pups were septic, suffering from a systemic infection that was affecting every organ. They were cold to the touch, unable to feed from mum, dehydrated, suffering a flea infestation and they had pustules forming all over their bodies. One even suffered a seizure soon after arriving.
Despite antibiotics, active warming, tube feeding, plasma transfer at the vets, subcutaneous fluids and around the clock care we are sadly down to one tiny fighter.
She has finally started to latch and she is even trying to find the teat herself now, though is still too weak to have a full feed on her own.
Her mum has such severe BOAS that she can’t lay down or she struggles to breath, she always lays on her tummy to extend her neck and usually remains upright. As soon as she is able, we will arrange her surgery to have her airways opened. For now though, it means her pup can’t access the teat unless assisted.
Fingers crossed it’s all positive news from here on 💛

Happy Howl-oween 🎃
Forget ghouls, ghosts and vampires. There is nothing more terrifying than an unplanned pregnancy or the rising costs of living.
Part of our community outreach program is offering the services of our Last Litter Program. And we are proud to say that it has never been busier, with more and more people taking us up on our offer to rehome their accidental litters responsibly.
Yesterday we welcomed our Howl-oween litter, who will be vaccinated, microchipped, desexed and wormed before they are available for adoption.
And mum dog will be desexed for free to ensure she doesn’t have any more unexpected litters.
Through the Last Litter Program we hope to make unplanned pregnancies less terrifying for our community and help to balance the growing cost of living for those who may find themselves struggling.
Welcome Raven, Freddy Krueger, Chucky, Annabelle and Wednesday to The Yellow Door family!
Available for adoption 🌻

Full name: Sadie Joy Zoom
Age: 9mths
Breed: I am told I am an American Staffy x Mastiff.
However I have the sleek aristocratic shape of a dog built for speed. Think large whippet. And speed I do. Zoomies are my absolute favourite thing. If I have a squeaky ball and a fellow zoomer it brings me soooo much joy.
My other favourite thing is cuddles. Oh to have a hand scratching, patting, holding me is just such joy. I never want to be more than 3mtrs away from my human (unless Im zooming). I come back as soon as Im called and zooom around them a few times before zooming away again.
When Im on a lead I am such a good girl, walking with my manners in check.
I love being inside and happy to rest quietly on my bed, or even better, my foster mum’s bed. Dont tell her but my ambition is to do zoomies on the bed while she is in it.
I sometimes have accidents inside when Im really busting, mostly I go toilet outside though and Im very good overnight.
I would like my new family to be home a lot, but Im ok for a short while by myself. Ive met some small people and I think I could have some joyful moments with them.
I need a large yard to zoom in and would be ok with or without a doggie friend. But I would like a playmate or 2 to catch up with.
Im very interested in the cats I live with and would like to play, but sadly they dont want to.
I hate loud voices, they make me just want to hide somewhere. At the moment I mostly get into trouble for chewing interesting things like power leads and shoes. I do like crunching softdrink bottles.
I do have a deep doggy woof that I like to think will help protect my family.... Thats if ever anyone takes me seriously.
I promise to be the very best girl I can be, if you give me the opportunity to be a part of your family.
Love Sadie x

At 7 weeks old, these guys are almost ready to move off to foster homes where they can learn some basic commands, toilet training, crate training and hit the town to learn about the big wide world.
Once they reach 10 weeks of age they will be desexed and start heading off to new homes to be spoilt and adored!
Allow us to officially introduce:
Boys - Largos, Merri and Sadock.

🚨 Dolores needs surgery 🚨
We are twelve loved up weeks into our journey with Dolores the crossbred puppy.
For those who may not know, Dolores was found dumped in a cardboard box in the middle of winter on a football oval with her umbilical cord attached. Unfortunately for her littermates they were unable to be saved by veterinary staff.
Our dedicated neonatal carer, bottle raised Dolores from 48 hours old, when she was transferred into our care and Dolores has grown into the most gentle, intelligent and loyal puppy you could ever hope to meet.
Over the past twelve weeks we have come to understand that Ron, a transfer we received from GAWS, was likely Dolores’ brother from a previous litter. We committed $3000 in X-rays and CT scans investigating the source of his discomfort and we discovered that Ron suffered from mild bilateral hip dysplasia.
This, combined with the fact that the majority of Dolores’ littermates were suffering from hindlimb deformities when they were discovered on that freezing morning, obviously had us greatly concerned about what this would mean for Dolores’ hip development.
Last week she underwent an anaesthetic and X-rays which determined she too is suffering from early stage hip dysplasia. The specialists at GARS have recommended early surgical intervention to address the current abnormalities which they hope will limit the potential impact it has on her life, giving her the best chance at avoiding further surgical procedures.
We have done all we can to ensure Dolores has the very best start to life but unfortunately we cannot change the genetics her thoughtless breeder dealt her. So she will undergo Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis on Friday morning.
The diagnostics thus far have cost $450 and the surgery is estimated at $2700.
If you have the ability to spare the cost of your coffee for our dear Dolores we would be most grateful.

Our beautiful panda shepherd, Lamby, had more interest in his adoption post than any other dog we have had in care. After sifting through the many applications, his chosen adopter was one of our very own. Katie is one of our selfless team of volunteers and she fell head over heels for this incredible boy. Now named Atlas, he will forever be a part of The Yellow Door family. Follow his journey @atlaspandapaws

Have you been looking for a way to celebrate the special relationship between you and your furry friend?
With the added bonus of being able to support a local business and rescue animals in the process?
One of our kind carers is also a very skilled artist and is offering her talents to our followers. For $100 Clare will complete a sketch of your chosen photo. $20 of that will be donated to The Yellow Door - Rescue and Rehoming to help us continue our welfare work.
Clare will also send you a video of her completing the sketch.
Below is a video of her creating a sketch of our mascot Blinkin, the blind pup.
We hope to have some Blinkin merchandise available in the not too distant future featuring this beautiful creation.
