In 2019 more than 12,000 animals entered into the Lubbock Animal Shelter, these numbers do not include the thousands of others that went through other local rescues in our community. There are solutions to some of the issues we face with our animal population in Lubbock as well as the number that are left abandoned.
A dog can have over 70 puppies and one cat can have 180 kittens in their lifetime. One of the easiest ways to prevent this is spaying and neutering your pets, I have attached The P.E.T.S. Clinic of Lubbock prices page that lists their low cost spay and neuter options. This will also include their prices for low-cost vaccinations, microchipping, heartworm testing and preventatives. All of which have been proven reasons for owners to give up their pets, due to being unable to afford proper vet care. In case of emergencies or need for other vet examinations there are also credit care options available to allow your animal to be treated, a link for information on this will be attached.

Vet care is not the only thing the animal needs, food can sometimes feel like an impossible expense for pet owners. The Lubbock Food Bank as well as Meals on wheels have programs available to help provide food for anyone struggling to feed their pets.

In the cases where someone cannot keep their pet for whatever reason, there are rescues to reach out to. The South Plains SPCA, The Haven, Savings Grace Pit Bull Rescue, Dusty Puddles Dachshund rescue, Four legged Friends, Humane Society of West Texas, as well as several others. They are wonderful options for helping your animals find a great home after you. The Lubbock Animal shelter has also decreased their kill-rate significantly the last few years and you can surrender your animal to them with a small surrendering fee.
For anyone who is in a place of being able to help our community, several of these rescues above could always use donations, volunteers, and especially fosters. These animals do so much better when they are able to socialize in a home rather than in a shelter environment and it can help them tremendously in being adopted. Reach out to some of our rescues and find out ways you can help!
