The debut of the New York State Fair Collegiate Challenge Championship brought Western teams from Syracuse, Alfred and Cornell universities to the Coliseum on Sunday. Top honors and bragging rights in Horsemanship, Reining and Ranch Riding went to Alfred University. Reserve Champions were the Syracuse riders; Cornell finished in third.

Speed is the word of the day as the barrel racers take over the Coliseum. It's an adrenaline packed day with more than 150 daring horses and fearless riders .... because “Whoa” is the last word on anyone’s mind with a total of $5,500 in prize money on the line.

Freestyle Reining makes its Fair debut today! Often compared to figure skating, the freestyle competition sets the athletic moves of reining to pop music.
Freestyle is the showstopping finale to a full day of Western riding, from teeny tots on a lead line, to the $1,000 Run for the Money Versatility class where one horse is ridden in four different events: Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining and Barrel Racing.

Day 1 of The Great New York State Fair horses show! Today is hunter/jumper day and there's something for everyone, from beginners hopping their first set of cross rails to jumper classes where horses soar over three-foot fences.,
Obstacle Driving-- new to the Fair this year --is the evening special. It's a test of speed, accuracy and the horse’s obedience as drivers negotiate a course of up to 20 pairs of cones, each with a ball balanced on top, and set only a few centimeters wider than the wheels of the carriage.

Forecast for Western Day at The Great New York State Fair Horse Show: There will be a cold front moving through -- watch out for a hard freeze around the Coliseum -- with a 100 percent chance of reining

Important information, please read: If you plan to compete in this year’s New York State Fair horse show, you must have everything submitted – entry forms, fees, stall reservations etc. –in order to receive your exhibitor pass to the fairgrounds in advance. Good morning! The final countdown is on to the start of competition at The Great New York State Fair horse show.
One important update: There will be NO age limit for the hunter seat Short Stirrup and Walk-Trot classes and Division Championships. Eight or 80 -- throw a saddle on that horse and join us at the show.

Every competitor at The Great New York State Fair horseshow will receive exhibitors passes for free admission to the fairgrounds. Please get your entries in -- or at least stall reservations -- so we can start sending out passes.

Time to fill out those entry forms! It's 34 days and counting until the return of The Great New York State Fair horse show, with new classes -- full days of Western, hunter/jumper, barrel racing and reining -- AND new cash prizes.
How much cash, you ask? Here's one sneak peek: This year will see a first-at-the-Fair National Reining Horse Association $5,000 Open Freestyle. (And this fabulous trophy. And bragging rights.)
