If you've adopted a fearful cat, provide a sanctuary room with plenty of hiding places. Take things slowly when it comes to interaction and trust-building. Let the cat set the pace. What a fearful cat needs is choice. The cat needs the freedom to choose whether to be visible or hidden, whether to move closer and interact with you, or keep a distance. This is the beginning of trust-building. A cat who feels they have no choice or control in the situation will feel backed in a corner and will look for the first opportunity to escape or go into defensive mode. Don’t underestimate the value of choice. Remember it can take 3 months +/- for a cat (or dog) to adjust to a new home. Patience makes all the difference! 💕😺

$5 Friday Is Here!!!!

YOUR DONATIONS can change lives!! A $5 donation doesn’t seem like much but if everyone donated $5 it would really help us change the lives of our cats.

Today we’re focused on Rain, who continues to be in the veterinary hospital. Rain is still at Triangle Vet receiving treatment. Upon admission he was in kidney failure with a BUN level of over 185. (Normal is 35-50) Today his BUN level is 76!!! While this is phenomenal news, Rain is still on fluids, medications and a special diet. The staff at Triangle are working diligently to get Rain’s numbers even lower. Our vet bill continues to climb, but that is no reason to give up! If you would like to donate to our vet bill you can do so at the following links or by calling Triangle and making a payment on the Magnolia’s Hope Account.

And Happy Friday Everyone!! Thank you for all your kindness and generosity.

Having a cat buddy can help them develop social skills, learn how to interact with other animals, read body language, and communicate more clearly. Two kittens entertain each other and enrich each others’ environment. Kittens who are able to remain with one of their littermates or a similarly-aged companion tend to be healthier and happier, and in the long run, better socialized pets than those who are isolated from others of their kind at an early age.

Nine out of ten rescues only post the positive outcomes and stories supporters and donors want to hear. But, in reality there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes.

Just like every other rescue, it’s the dozens upon dozens of messages requesting Magnolias Hope take the kittens they found or the pet someone can no longer keep. The unlimited threats of “we will have no other choice but to relinquish to the local kill shelter” or “the neighbor will shoot these animals if you can’t take them now”. It’s vets offices referring clients and the daily euthanasia lists from shelters, some of which we have no idea how they even heard of our small little rescue. Then there are the messages berating us because we can’t take “just one more”. The messages hounding us for an “update on the kittens we just brought”, but couldn’t be bothered to foster or spay and neuter that neighborhood stray. It’s the calls from neighbors because they know what we do, asking us to trap or help with a medical case. It’s keeping up with social media and begging for money, knowing that at the end of the day, we will end up paying for the cost of almost 90% of the rescues needs out of our personal funds. It’s trying to make the public understand we rescues are NOT funded by the government.

It’s falling in love with these precious souls. Staying up endless nights, syringe feeding, giving fluids, bathing and combing out absurd amounts of fleas, smelling and cleaning up more diarrhea in a week than any normal person would want to see in a lifetime. Attending vet visits, giving meds and vaccines, finding fosters, looking over adoption applicants - because after all the hard work, we need to know our babies are going to amazing homes.

Finally it’s the commitment and the sacrifices we rescuers make that most of the public are unaware of. Rarely do we get to take a break. Most rescuers will struggle to tell you when they last had a REAL vacation. Rescue doesn’t stop on holidays or weekends. It doesn’t stop when we are tired or sick. And on the small whim we do get an opportunity to take a break, we feel guilty that we used our personal funds for anything other than rescue. Our loved ones beg for us to just take time for ourselves and our family all while hearing from the community that we aren’t doing enough. People are quicker to write something negative just because we couldn’t help them, rather than write something positive for the hundreds of other things we have done.

So today, take a moment to appreciate your local rescues. Even if they had to turn you away or say no. We need to feel supported and understood just as badly as you need our help.

UPDATE: $375 to go!! Thank you to all who have already helped!

We need your help! One of our male kitties is in the hospital overnight with a severe urinary blockage. The estimate for care is currently at $539. We’re asking for assistance to cover this veterinary bill. Kitten season has been hard on us and the bank account is very low right now. You can donate to us or call the veterinary office directly and pay on our account. We appreciate any help you can offer us!

My cats live here, they’re here to stay.
You don’t like pets? Be on your way.
They grace my home, my food, my space.
This is their home, this is their place.

You will find fur on every chair,
They'll greet you with a curious stare.
They might approach and sniff your shoe,
A simple 'NO' will send them through.
It baffles me when you proclaim,
How can you live in such a way?

They scratch, they purr, they climb the walls.
WHO ASKED YOU? is what my mind calls.
They love me more than words can say,
Their purrs greet me at the end of the day.
They need just a glance from me,
And come to curl up on my knee.

When I’m down, they sense my blues,
When I’m joyous, they share my cues.
Their whiskers twitch, their eyes gleam bright,
They bring me comfort day and night.

So once again, I tell you true,
‘Come visit me,’ but know this too…
My cats live here, they’re here to stay.
You don’t like pets? Be on your way.
They grace my home, my food, my space,
This is their home, this is their place.

It's month elebenty twelve of kitten season in the south. If you find a kitten, please do what you can to help the unlucky baby right away! Wanted to share this info that a rescue friend posted... thanks Mitzi!!

We are still receiving messages daily on little kittens being found and kittens with eye issues. This is how you can help until space opens up here at MHKR! 🐈🐾🐈🐾🐈

Everyone is finding little kittens riddled with fleas. If kittens are under 2 pounds, we don’t do anything for fleas but a bath in Dawn. But please do so, especially if their gums are turning white. Otherwise, chemicals are too toxic for them if not at 2 lbs.

However if you find a kitten that is lethargic, please give it a tad of karo syrup immediately and then a few more times an hour to get its blood sugar back up and keep it on a heating source before you give it a bath. Because no matter how warm or lukewarm your water is that you are bathing it in, a bath will drop their body temperature just a tad and that might be all it takes to slip over the rainbow bridge.

Kittens with goopy eyes should be cleaned with warm water and given terramycin ointment in their eyes 3 times a day. You can find it at Tractor Supply.

We can all do our part to help. Because most likely when you find one it will take days to find someone to help you with it and what you do for it in those couple of days could mean life or death. And please DO NOT GIVE IT COWS MILK.

If it won't eat canned kitten food, you can give it chicken flavored baby food or kitten formula depending on age.

If you find a litter of kittens under 3-4 weeks of age, leave them alone! If they are quiet and healthy they have a mama. If they are sick and screaming, most likely they don’t. Know when to intervene and when not to.

TIA!
