"Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead." ~ Louisa May Alcott

Sound on for this one. We followed one herd of up the ridge and into this group. The bulls were not thrilled to be so close to each other, but what a vocal performance they gave us!

Sound on! Emmett knows how we feel about fall around here.

It was a stormy morning but we got a break in the rain long enough for a couple hours of riding.

Isn’t she lovey? This daughter of has my heart. She is so graceful. I am excited to see what she can become. As much as I would love to have her as a trail mount, as perfect as I think she could be as my headless horseman partner on Halloweens to come, I think she is probably destined for greater things.

Although there are some stories I share with almost every guest we welcome to the ranch, most of the conversations are unique and personal, rambling as you might expect from the soul of a cowboy who has spent thirty years encased in the life of a lawyer.

Last week the conversation turned to a motorcycle ride I did with my daughter a few years back. She had recently returned from a church mission to Houston, Texas and accepted my invitation to do a “50CC” ironbutt ride; coast to coast – San Diego to Jacksonville -- in fewer than 50 hours. It was epic!

On the way home we visited the home of her mission president and mission “mom”, . The spirit of peace, love, and welcome in their home struck me. I was in a holy place. As I told my guest, , I wanted my home to be like that. He turned in his saddle and assured me, “You’ve created that here.”

Of course, I can’t take credit for creating the beauty of the mountains, the adventure of a steep descent through the oak brush, or the transcendental unity of horse, rider, and nature. I’m just grateful for the opportunities I have to share those experiences with so many good people.

Some stories I share with almost every guest we welcome to the ranch—rambling as you might expect from the soul of a cowboy who has spent thirty years encased in the life of a lawyer. But it’s the conversations, especially with riders, that remain the great motivator to do what I do.

As spring gives way to summer, we just keep counting our blessings. These two babies have been such a joy. The grass has been enough, and as Mattie Ross says, “Enough is as good as a feast.” And our guests! We have been blessed with wonderful guests. Every one of them kind, patient, eager to learn, and awed and inspired by God’s beautiful creations. 📸:

We’re short on grass this year. We didn’t get much snow last winter and the storms this spring have been small, few and far between. As satisfying as it is to sit and listen to her munch the grass with her c**t resting behind her, I can’t help but worry what things are going to look like come July and August. The rains this last week are a welcome blessing. We’ll definitely take more if we can get it.

About a year ago I learned that Edwin Whiting, the pioneer who homesteaded our ranch, was a fruit farmer before coming to Utah. I believe he must have planted this pear tree that somehow survives alone in the midst of the sage and grass. Blossoms this week will lead to late summer fruit. This glorious time of year has me feeling so blessed to live in the beautiful world Heavenly Father created for me and you.

I’ve read that said, “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.”Andrew was pretty nervous at the start of his ride. He had never been on a horse before, so who could blame him? He saddled up because Tyler really wanted to go horseback riding. Swipe to see Anndrew’s face by the middle of the ride! Almost nothing helps your confidence quite like What are your weekend plans? The kind of pioneer we need today, “crosses school playgrounds, parking lots, and cultural halls. This kind of pioneer crosses any fence or wall of separation to build bridges of understanding, compassion, friendliness, and good neighborliness.” ~ Gerrit W. Gong
