No, but seriously…I am grateful not only to bring this lovely girl along in her training but also to call her mine. It takes a village, and she’s had some wonderful women in her life who have helped bring her to this place. I don’t know a young horse with as many adoring and supportive fans as she has, all across the country. Thank you to her breeder, Melissa Adkison, and to her former owner, Joan Rudiger, for making this partnership possible!

Fourteen years ago this feisty, challenging, and loving girl became my dance partner. It’s been a journey…whoa, has it ever! We’ve walked a lot of paths together. From a 2 year old filly who stood on her hind legs every time I tried to pet her to a Grand Prix contender on the national stage, we’ve come a long way.

She’s 16 now. She owns her own farm. She commands every visitor’s respect. She’s the prettiest, the smartest, the strongest, the biggest, the fastest. She still competes on the big stage at the Grand Prix. She still stands on her legs and tells me I’m difficult to train. But, she tries hard and shows up for me every day anyway. She goes on any adventure I ask her to. She takes care of me when I’m broken. She gives beginners the gentlest of rides. She tolerates my trail riding. She forgives me when I’m not my best. She loves me even though I make mistakes.

Kiss and hug your mares today. And every day…even though they break your hearts and your wallets and are difficult at times. They’re amazing and spectacular and put us on top of the world. Hug them and treat them and pet them and remind them they’re prettier and smarter and more talented than everybody else…even though they knew all of that long before you did. Hug and kiss them. ‘Cause they don’t get to stay with us forever. And that day will always come too soon. ❤️

My last several days are definitely worthy of a low dressage score. Our second show of the season left a bit to be desired. Baby black rhino got a bit close for comfort when she got scared, and I came home with less toe than I arrived with and some restructuring of the bones in it. Lucky for me, I have some resourceful, generous, and humorous friends who helped medicate me with margaritas, laughter, and love. The show must go on… and so it did. Gillian came down to put a final ride on Harlow in the 4 year-old test for what was Gillian’s first ever dressage competition. Not bad for less than 12-hours’ notice! It’s important to have good friends to hold you up, hold you down, and get it done. These are mine, and I’m beyond lucky to have them. Thank you ‼️

Mare ears and horse show besties. This great group of ladies, both 2 and 4-legged, carried me through a memorable first horse show of the season. We’ll be back at it next weekend.

Reese’s dream team. He works for love, food AND girls. After being here for just two months, and being a super sensitive guy with a late start, he rocked it out for his first ride ever, including walk, trot, and canter. He’s a 5 year old Friesian (mostly), and he’s going to make an amazing partner someday.

-Owen. Long, tall, and derpy. Prefers locked boxes over the freedom of the great outdoors. Ice skates on concrete (it *IS* death ice after all). Can barely walk or stand up straight but dances like a ballerina sometimes. Former eventer (it’s ok…his people are good). Has everything he needs…still a weirdo. A lovable, charming weirdo, however.

Baby dragon’s first (solo!) ride in the outdoor. No lunging. Just mounted up and waltzed on out there unassisted. She rocked it! That’s what young horses do; they let you know when the time is right. You just have to be listening (and brave). This is four. 🖤🐉❤️

Dalanta. Boss mare OG. Mare ears = a perfect 10. Overconfident AND insecure. Eats cheeseburgers (from garbage cans). Snores like a dragon. Owns the farm and everybody knows it. Thinks humans are stupid. Loves small creatures. Sees dead people. Still trying to teach judges that the proper transition at X is one with no more than two feet on the ground. Grand Prix Queen, so let’s face it…she knows everything and doesn’t need anyone anyway. It’s good to be Queen.

Brave, sweet, intelligent, and responsive to light aids, she requires no lunging and is a pleasure to ride. She’s been to her first rated dressage show and handled it like a champ! Best suited for an AA, YR, or discerning professional, this girl will easily end up in the FEI ring with continued professional guidance.
