Axolotl’s have lungs but mostly rely on their signature long, feathery, external gills for oxygen. Genetics are mostly responsible when it comes to the length of the gills. As a breeder, I personally like to incorporate longer gills into my lines. Gills are noticeably effected from poor husbandry and health. They can be burned off or shrunken by ammonia or infections, etc. resulting in shorter stalks with sparse or lack of frills. A normal healthy Axolotl should have nice floofy gills (full length stalks full of frills) 💕
