Hola familia! Our last event for Latinx/Hispanic Heritage month is "Latinx Veterinary Leaders Panel" on Tuesday, 10/12 at 7:30 PM ET. We will be joined by four incredible veterinarians with backgrounds in practice ownership, organized medicine, public health, military and academia. ⠀⠀

Meet our panelists: ⠀

Dr. Paula Ospina, DVM, MPH, PhD was born in Cali, Colombia and emigrated to Los Angeles as a young child. ⁣ She worked at Quality Milk Production Services and is currently a dairy consultant and is starting an urgent care practice for cats and dogs in Auburn, NY. She obtained her DVM from Cornell CVM and her MPH from UC Davis followed by her PhD from Cornell. ⠀

Dr. Santiago Diaz, DVM is from Bogotá, Colombia but came to the United States in 2004 to pursue his dream of becoming an exotic/wildlife veterinarian. ⁣⁣He is the owner and head veterinarian of the Exotic Animal Hospital of Orlando. His clinic focuses on providing medical and surgical care to exotic species kept as pets. He graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. ⠀

Dr. Rachel Cezar-Martínez was born in Chicago, Illinois and was raised mostly in Mendon, Michigan. She is the Director of Live Animal Imports for United States Department of Agriculture and has worked in the federal government for 17 years. She also served as a Public Health Officer in the National Guard. Dr. Cezar-Martinez is a founding member of The Multicultural VMA and is president-elect of the National Assoication of Federal Veterinarians. ⠀

Dr. José V. Arce was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. ⁣In 2003, he founded Miramar Animal Hospital, together with his wife Dr. Anik Puig. ⁣In 2020 Dr. Arce was elected as President Elect of the AVMA, becoming the first Puerto Rican⠀
and the first minority elected as President Elect of the AVMA. Early this year, the Governor of Puerto Rico named Dr. Arce Animal Health and Wellbeing Officer for the government of Puerto Rico.⠀

¡Hola!

Mi nombre es Natalia y soy de la isla Borikén 🇵🇷 also known as Puerto Rico. Did you know that Borikén is how our Taínos (indigenous ancestors) named the island? We always try to embrace our Taíno heritage.

I’m a 2nd year and I’m interested in mixed animal practice or maybe a specialty in small animal. I’m still figuring this out because I LOVE every single aspect of veterinary medicine.

I’m excited for the opportunity to represent your voice and heritage as your social chair and social media manager. My goal with these positions is to work hard with the other officers to find tools for you guys to be successful and happy in this career. LVMA is a safe place for y’all ❤️

My name is Raisa Vélez-Contreras, a second year veterinary student from la Isla del Encanto, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷🌺. My goal is to work with small animals and hopefully complete a residency after my DVM. Additionally, I want to focus on serving low-income communities to help raise awareness of the importance of veterinary care as well as making it accessible to all. I am very excited to continue working with LVMA to celebrate incredible Latinx cultures and to contribute to making the veterinary community an all-inclusive, diverse environment. ❤️🧬
