Do your research 🧐
Significant effort and toil are invested in breeding when enhancing the breed.
Exhibiting your dog requires patience, time, and dedication. Your dog undergoes assessment by a judge who will appraise your dog according to the breed standard. (Each breed follows a breed standard). A great deal of preparation is involved in a litter. Investigating bloodlines, pedigrees, genetics, OFA health assessments, progesterone evaluations, semen analysis, ultrasounds, X-rays, etc. All of this requires time and incurs expenses. Anyone can pair two dogs, but it’s essential to verify the type of health screening they’re undergoing. Genetic testing does not constitute a comprehensive health evaluation.
Every breed has suggested health screenings, which you can locate on the OFA website.
Dachshunds have 2 tests, the 3rd is optional but recommended.
1. AVCO eye examination is conducted by an ophthalmologist.
2. Patellar luxation should be performed after the age of 12 months.
3. Cardiac (optional yet advised), fundamental cardiac assessment.
Results for dogs can be published on OFA.
