Regular grooming is important for keeping your pooch comfortable in his own fur. This is especially true for long-coated canines.

Matted and tangled isn’t fun or comfortable, so you’ll need to brush him every day.

Pay special attention to the hair around the elbows, on the tummy and between the legs, as these areas are particularly prone to matting.

When brushing double coated dogs, your last step should be to run a fine tooth comb from skin to the end of the hair shaft to ensure no matts/tangles.

If you’re not prepared to brush daily, take him to a professional dog groomer to get his coat clipped or shaved.

during winter months: Remove common poisons.

Antifreeze attracts cats and dogs because it is very sweet to taste, but it is extremely poisonous and can cause serious illness or death when ingested.

Be sure to clean up any antifreeze that spills in your garage, and keep the bottle somewhere your pets cannot access.

Puppies do best when they’re on a schedule. Set up a schedule on your calendar and record times for potty breaks, feeding, training and bed time.

When it comes to bathroom routines, this helps to prevent accidents and makes house training so much easier.

Be sure to reward the behavior you want, which ensures you’re setting up your puppy for success.

Ask Dr. Marcy: Do Cats Get Dry Skin in the Winter?
Your cat's skin can get dry in the winter, just like ours. Dry skin may appear red, scaly, and flaky. If it's especially itchy, your cat may bite or scratch at it, causing sores and scabbing.

Check your cat's skin regularly for any issues all year round but especially during the winter. If you notice any problems, book an appointment with your vet for treatment advice.

Dogs are at particular risk of salt poisoning in winter due to the rock salt used in many areas—often when licking it from their paws after a walk.

Store de-icing salt in a safe place.

And be sure to wipe your dog’s paws, even after short walks.

How much exercise does my pup need?

How much exercise your pet gets should be based on your pup’s age, breed, and size.

Consider what your dog was bred for. For example, sporting breeds will need considerably more exercise per day than a toy breed. No matter what, it’s important to stay on a regular schedule.

Try to get in the habit of going for a consistent amount of time each day and at the same time of day. Your pup will know what time their walk, run, or fetch time is at, and they’ll remind you on those days you forget.
