The Labrador retriever is a breed of dog. Originally it was bred as a hunting hunting retriever dog. Labradors are used for hunting, as guide dogs, rescue dogs, but mainly as companions. The breed originated on the island of Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada.
The history of the Labrador retriever begins in the 19th century. At that time there was a so-called "little Newfoundland" on the island of Newfoundland, which was a faithful assistant to fishermen. The Englishman Peter Hawker brought several of them to Great Britain, which he called "St. John's Breed of Newfoundland". From crossing these dogs with a curly-haired retriever and, possibly, with an English Foxhound and a setter, the Labrador was born. The first standard for the breed was established in 1887. In 1903 only black Labradors were recognized by the English Kennel Club, but at the end of the XX century another color became paler, and even later - chocolate.
In the USSR, the first Labradors appeared in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
