Can Dogs Eat Cod Liver Oil

What is cod liver oil?
Cod liver oil is pretty much what you already suspect: a fish oil that is made from the liver of cod fish. The process usually involves dicing the liver into small pieces, simmering it and capturing the oil that raises to the surface.

The cod fish lives in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and it’s one of a handful of fish that are important sources of two particular types of omega-3 fatty acids known best by their acronyms: EPA and DHA.

Can dogs have cod liver oil?
Usually, dogs can eat cod liver oil without any side effects. As long as it comes from a reliable source, this addition to their diet typically has no toxic substances that are known to be harmful to dogs. However, it’s important to discuss with your vet before offering your dog cod liver oil. Oftentimes, they already have all the nutrients they need from their specially-formulated dog food and there is no need for supplementing their diet.

Is cod liver oil good for dogs?
Cod liver oil possesses important nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A and vitamin D. Omega 3 is important in supporting healthy fur and skin, and has anti-inflammatory qualities among other benefits. Vitamin A has a role in immune function and eye health, whereas Vitamin D supports bone health.

Don’t forget that for most dogs a balanced diet of dog food contains all the nutrients they need. However, some dogs may benefit from cod liver oil supplements – those with certain types of skin or joint disease for example. So, if you’re wondering whether cod liver oil is good for your dog, it is best to talk with your vet. If supplements are needed due to your dog’s age, size, or health conditions such as arthritis, ask your vet if cod liver oil for dogs is a good option. Your vet will consider your pet’s particular needs and advise accordingly.

How to offer cod liver oil to your dog
Cod liver oil for dogs is usually available as a liquid, or as a tablet or capsule. All versions can be mixed with their regular food and dog treats, so feeding them the oil should go smoothly.

There are no set-in-stone rules for the dosage. This depends on many factors, including what their diet consists of, how old your dog is, if they are a small or a big breed and if they have any particular health conditions. All this information will be needed by the vet to recommend the appropriate dosage when it comes to cod liver oil for dogs.

The risks of giving cod liver oil to dogs
If your vet has given you the go-ahead for supplementing your dog’s diet with cod liver oil, here are a few risks to be aware of:

Unreliable sources
Not all cod liver oil comes from safe sources. So, make sure you’re getting it from reputable brands.

Overdosage
whether you dog already takes similar supplements or their usual food already offers them the right balance of nutrients, adding extra nutrients to their diet may result in the diet becoming unbalanced and at worst can even end up being harmful. Having too much cod liver oil can lead to health issues. These would usually be mild – digestive upsets for example. However, large amounts could result in vision problems caused by an excess of vitamin A or even kidney disease caused by too much vitamin D. That is why it is always best to follow your vet’s advice when giving your dog supplements.

Supplements not designed for pets
It is often best to offer cod liver oil supplements that are specifically for dogs but your vet will advise you on what is best for your pet.

Unusual signs to look out for when offering dogs cod liver oil
As long as you follow your vet’s instruction, cod liver oil should be a safe way to supplement a dog’s diet. However, you should keep an eye out for unusual symptoms, especially if this is the first time they’ve been offered this type of fish oil. The most immediate troublesome sign is an upset stomach. This happens more often with pets with a history of gastrointestinal issues.

How much salmon should I give my dog?
Feeding in moderation is key to keeping your pooch healthy and this includes salmon! For most dogs, salmon should be limited to a once a week treat and not be the main meal of the day. It’s also important to make sure that it's a portion suitable for your dog's size. Some dogs with allergies may benefit from diets containing salmon as the main protein source but you should always check with the vet before feeding your dog salmon.

Is salmon good for dogs?
As we mentioned earlier, in moderation, salmon can be good for your dog. It has great properties which can be beneficial for your pooch like:

Supporting their immune systems

Helping manage certain skin allergies your dog might have

Keeping their coat shiny and healthy

Easily digestible

Can help to reduce inflammation

Good source of protein

May help improve cognitive function in older dogs

Low in mercury so can be fed more often than other fish, like tuna.

For some dogs, salmon might contain too much oil or fat and this may cause an upset stomach. It’s important to check with your vet if you think this is the case.

How do I feed salmon to dogs?
Make sure to choose fresh, boneless fillets (and still be sure to check for tiny bones before cooking). Then you can either, poach, grill, roast, steam, or bake the salmon. Make sure it’s well cooked, as we don’t want raw fish, and is plain without any spices (including salt) or oil.

Dogs can also eat a bit of salmon skin if it’s cooked well, unseasoned and cut into small pieces to avoid choking.

Can dogs eat courgette?
Yes, dogs can eat courgette and it’s perfectly safe for dogs and puppies. In fact, it may be one of the best vegetables to feed dogs. Courgette can be given to dogs raw or cooked, and they can eat the fruit or flowers. However, it’s important not to give your dog too much courgette at once. Dogs can eat courgette, but in moderation.

Courgettes are an increasingly popular summer vegetable, and are a part of the squash family. While botanically a fruit, the courgette is a thin-skinned variety of marrow and is treated by most of us as a vegetable. Low in calories and high in fibre, courgettes are a good source of vitamin A and C, as well as vitamin B9. Due to the low-calorie levels and high levels of fibre, courgettes are considered a great treat option for any dog needing lose a few pounds.

How much courgette can dogs eat?
Courgette may be low in calories, but that does not mean that a dogs should have a large amount of courgette. The recommended feeding of treats is that they should make up no more than 10 percent of your dog’s diet, which is a great way to figure out how much courgette to feed your dog.

To courgette or not to courgette
Dogs usually tolerate courgette well, however, over feeding your dog anything can lead to digestive upset, and it is always a good idea to observe your dog’s behaviour any time you offer them new food, as well as looking out for any signs of illness.

Kittens love to play - one minute they are full of beans and the next they’ll be zonked out, asleep where they fall. The best way to play with your kitten is to encourage play with different toys including ones that they can interact with alone (such as ball circuits) and ones that you can use together (fishing rods are always a winner but always make sure your kitten is supervised).

Rotate the types of toys that your kitten is using so that they don’t get bored. If you notice that your kitten is showing predatory behaviour (stalking, pouncing, jumping, biting, or clawing), then they might be bored - you can distract them from this by using toys for physical and mental enrichment.

You may be tempted to use your fingers or your toes to play with your kitten, but you should avoid this. If they believe this is an acceptable form of play, you may end up with a few injuries when they’ve grown into an adult cat! This type of inappropriate play is very common in kittens. So it’s important to teach them by using positive reinforcement and not by telling them off. Ignore unwanted behaviours so as to not inadvertently encourage them by reacting. If they are using your feet as a toy, stay completely still so that they are no longer ‘prey’.

Before you bring your kitten home, prepare as much in advance as you can. Choose a quiet room for them to spend their first week in where they can settle and start to gain confidence in their new home. Make sure they have access to:

Separate areas for food and water
At least one litter tray (away from any other things)
A comfortable, soft bed
At least one safe hiding spot - this can be a covered carrier, a teepee style bed or a box.
Areas for climbing such as shelves or a cat tree
Toys and scratching posts.
You can also bring home something that smells familiar to them such as a blanket so that they feel less anxious.
Once you have brought your kitten into their new room, let them settle and acclimatise. Don’t remove your kitten from their carrier, leave the door open and allow them to come out in their own time. It can be tempting to shower them with affection and excitement, but they are likely to be stressed by the move. You don’t want to overwhelm them. Have patience and let them get used to their new environment - there will be plenty of time for cuddles later! When you leave the room, you can put a radio on quietly - the soft background noise will help them feel less nervous and will muffle other sounds that they may find scary.

It’s important to have already registered with your vet BEFORE you bring your new family member home. Their immune system is still developing and problems can arise quickly, so ensure you’ve got your new vet at the end of the phone for any emergencies. You should take your new arrival to visit their vet as soon as possible to ensure that they are healthy, to purchase flea and worming products, and discuss neutering and microchipping.

After the first few days, hopefully your kitten will be feeling safe and a bit less stressed. You can introduce new experiences to them in this room such as meeting other family members so that they can start to build up their confidence before they take on the whole house. It’s important to remember that meeting lots of people at once can be overwhelming for your new kitten, so introduce the rest of the family gradually.

Dog adoption - what happens next?

Preparing for the first few days
Having a new addition to your family is an exciting time and it's tempting to show off your new companion to all your friends and family, but you need to give your dog time to settle in and get used to their new home and family before you start to introduce them to new people.

The first evening/night
Before you take your dog home, decide on some house rules with the family, for example, where will they sleep at night? Are they allowed on the sofa? Start as you mean to go on and make sure you stick to these from day one. Make sure that wherever you want the dog to sleep is where they should be on their first night and be prepared for some whining and barking.

Feel free to change your dog’s name, unless recommended otherwise by a member of staff. If their new name is used only in a positive context they will learn it quickly.

Sleeping/den
If your dog is sleeping or resting, leave them alone. You can introduce a crate ‘den’ to give your dog a safe space to retreat to and teach children not to interact with them if they are in their safe space.

You will need to provide your dog with at least two beds, one for the bedroom or sleeping area, and a second placed where they will spend most their time during the day. Ensure the beds are comfortable and as large as possible; if you wouldn’t feel comfortable sitting in it, then why should they?

Feeding
When deciding what to feed your dog it can get a bit confusing with all the options available. Mayhew will provide you with a bag of good quality food and we recommend you stick to one brand to avoid your dog getting an upset stomach. We can offer advice for feeding and you can check out the food advice website listed at the end of this guide.

If you are considering adding fresh food or leftovers to make your dog’s meals more interesting, remember dog food is a specifically balanced diet and any titbits shouldn’t represent more than 10% of your dog’s meal. Please note, not all foods we eat are safe for dogs.

We recommend that your dog is fed at least twice a day. Follow the guidelines on the package to determine how much to feed your dog and take into account how may treats are given.

Contrary to some schools of thought, you should not take a dog's food bowl away from them while they’re eating. This may make them anxious about your presence near their bowl and could lead to ‘resource guarding’. It is much better to leave them in peace to finish their meal. Remember, food does not need to be always given in a bowl. You can use meal times as part of enrichment.

Always ensure fresh water is available.

Collar and lead
You will need to purchase a lead and collar for your new dog. At Mayhew, we have a wide variety and we will be happy to help choose the correct size.

Always keep your dog on its lead when walking on the street, or near roads. Only let your dog off lead in the park or in open spaces. You will need to purchase a long trailing line for the first walks in the park until you are confident your new dog will reliably recall to you.

Identification of your dog
Your dog has been microchipped as a method of identification, however, under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, your dog must also always wear a collar with the name, contact and address of the owner on it, or engraved on a tag when in public. We don’t recommend putting the dog’s name on the tag.

Include your mobile telephone number if you have one and consider including the messages such as:

Reward offered for return.
I should not be out alone.
Call vet if hurt, will guarantee fee.
Do not put the dogs’ name anywhere on the disc.
Toys
The more toys you can provide the better. Just as a child will lose interest in the same toy, so will your dog. Don’t buy a few toys and expect them to last a lifetime, even if the tennis ball you bought three years ago is still in one piece!
The following is a list of must have toys for your dog:

A large variety of different toys with different shapes, textures and sounds. The Kong company do a good selection.
Snuffle mats and activity feeders
A variety of chews: your vet can advise you on which ones are safe for your individual dog
Take note of which toys your dog seems to enjoy the most as you can then use these toys as rewards during training. Try to alternate toys to keep interest. Remember that your dog needs YOU to interact with them. Regular play will keep your dog’s mind active and stimulated.

Insurance
Unfortunately there is no equivalent to the NHS for dogs in the UK, so all medical treatment has to be paid for. Veterinary fees can become painfully expensive. Depending on your dog, insurance can cost anywhere from £40.00 - £250.00 an month, and you will have the peace of mind that should anything happen to your dog, you will be financially covered. If you adopt from Mayhew, you will be provided with four weeks of complimentary Insurance with Pet Plan.

Exercise
Puppies and all breeds of adult dogs need regular exercise each day to satisfy their mental and physical needs. Time spent in the garden (no matter how large it is) is no substitute for a good walk with their owner.

Puppies should be taken on 2-3 short walks on a daily basis and build up gradually as they grow, this will ensure healthy physical and mental development. Over exercising your puppy can lead to an increase in undesirable behaviours due to them being over-stimulated. An average pup should be sleeping around 16 hours a day.

Never exercise your dog on a full stomach as this can cause a life-threatening condition known as stomach torsion or bloat.

On the day you collect your new dog, take them for a walk around your neighbourhood. Let them take their time sniffing around their new area.

When giving your dog the freedom to run free, leave a 30- 50 ft ‘trailing line’ on as a precaution against them running off, this will give you comfort and confidence knowing it is there, just in case. NB. a trailing line is a 50ft lightweight nylon lead. Homemade lines can be made with rope, although if choosing this option, be careful of rope-burns.

Toys and games
Establishing safe toy play from day one is important, playing with two toys and encouraging your dog to drop the toy in his mouth for the second one, adding in a drop command. If your dog becomes over stimulated it is time to slow down your play so this does not escalate to any negative behaviour

This is especially important if you have children in your family. Establish rules of play with the children before allowing them to play with the dog. Children should only be allowed access to the dog under adult supervision.

There are many types of games you can play with your dog that incorporate different activities and are a great form of mental stimulation for your dog, there are books written on this subject as well as lots of rescores online, so get researching and have some fun!

The majority of our adult dogs will already be toilet trained but they may need a few reminders. When you first arrive home take them out into the garden and wait with them until they have relieved themselves. When they do go, give calm praise.

Don’t expect your dog to ‘tell you’ that they need to go outside as not all dogs will have been taught this. Remember that an adult dog will want to urinate every three to four hours, so give them plenty of opportunities to relieve themselves outdoors.

Don’t ever take your dog’s water away as a way of reducing urinating. If they’re thirsty, they should be allowed to drink, and if you do this they will only drink excessively when you give the water back.
