10 THINGS I DID WRONG
with My MASTIFF 9 - 10

9 LEASH
We let our puppy be so cute and bite his leash - big mistake. That was a hard habit to break. We ended up having to buy a chain for a collar to fix our mistake. Also we use pronged collars around other people. Some people disagree, but we have been very happy with the extra help it gives when walking out by others and their dogs. We have also seen on Arizona Cane Corso Mastiffs fb page ideas for different walking running harnesses that look amazing. Our trainer also taught us we can use a muzzle - for our supper protective male around others. Better a lunge and snout push than a bite. He is now too big to fit in any muzzles on the market - we’ll have to have one custome made.

10 TOYS & BONES
We constantly keep toys and chew bones available and updated. We have found they actually LOVE them and use them a lot. We have noticed when we do not have things for them to sink their teeth into - they find something. We have lost things when we don’t keep up on their chewing needs. Also if the do get to something of ours we say no chewing and have a toy in hand to show them toys are ok! We have a command TOYS and our dogs run to find them to play fetch and tug of war with us!

5. THE VET
Since this is a place of health for the future of your puppy and as an adult, make the first couple of times a reward! Treats and praise in exaggeration can help calm the stress of visits in the future!

6. ADULT DOG
Think about the future, your puppy is going to be 3 times it’s size within months. If you don’t want you large bread dog to do something when it’s larger than you or your children, then don’t allow it now as a puppy. For example if you don’t want your dog to bite you later do not let him bite you now. Take a chew toy 🦴 every time you play with or go outside to see your puppy, so your hands are off limits now and later.

7 PLACES & SPACES
If you plan to take the puppy to the dog park dog wash walking running camping to the lake or your mom or dads house - take them young and as often as possible! Help them get use to the car and traveling or walking/running with you even if you have to carry them before they are in the clear from shots. Also if you don’t want the big dog on the couch or bed later when they are grown - don’t let them be there now. For example we have a bench on the front porch we always sat on with them as puppies to pet and love - and now that is one of their favorite spots to be - and we don’t fit with them any more hahahah. We also like them on the tile inside so they have never been allowed on the rug - so they don’t even think of going on it now. Kennels and Crates are their home start young and they will love this space of their own. We don’t use our kennels as a place of punishment this can cause confusion or a fight to be put away in one. When we shout KENNEL our dogs come running happy to come in!

8 BATH & WATER
So our litter has been bathed in the sink with very warm water since a couple of days old so they enjoy it! If this continues throughout its life of being a puppy, then in the future if it’s able to fit in a bath tub or when the time comes to get a bath with the garden hose in the summer it won’t be so bad. Winter is not fun ever.

1. SOCIALIZING
We kept my puppy inside with no outside visitors until a week + after 3rd vaccine. 14 weeks. We missed the window of Socializing! There are precautions you can take to socialize wash hands, take of shoes, bath puppy after exposure. This is the most important thing in my opinion for the Cane Corso Mastiff to be around many healthy people and other animals especially- Family Friends & Neighbors - in and out of their home territory.

2. TOUCH - Paws Ears Mouth & Tail
We didn’t know to touch them constantly as a puppy in low stress situations. This will allow trust as an adult dog. Make things easier on yourself and your vet by making touch normal.
Supper helpful for future burrs slivers and trimming nails. Brushing teeth checking gums and mouth. Temperature 🤒 at the Vet. Earaches and cleaning ear canal.

3. TRAINING
We waited until our puppy was 1 year old to finally call a professional trainer due to uncontrollable puppy behavior.
We as a family were the problem! Each of us had a different set of commands and our puppy was confused. CharlieBar Boarding & Training came to our house and taught us as a FAMILY! We all learned the same 5 or 6 single to 2 word commands. This is so much more clear and understandable to the puppy/dog and the whole family! We now have a very obedient dog.

4. MASTER or NONE
Constant reaffirmation that you are Alfa of the pack is important. Although we LOVE our Mastiffs and we have had 4, we must remember their fierce and protective nature. We believe the Puppy/Dog doesn’t have choices it obeys commands. We as a family are the Masters. They earn everything from food toys treats walks and coming inside to kennels. To earn things, again we learned this from training, our dogs must sit stay and be given the command to break before they receive or do anything. For example we hold the food bowl command sit put the food bowl down make them wait say break and then they are free to eat their food. This Leads to you being the master of your dog as now and as an adult - with obedience and loyalty.

Today my Vet mentioned, If you get all three vaccines 💉 from the Vet by Vanguard they guarantee your puppies health from Parvo.

He gave an example of a puppy that did contract parvo after all three shots, but it only lasted 24-48 hours instead of weeks to possibly being deadly.
