🐧 Forscher*innen warnen vor einem Populationskollaps der Humboldt-Pinguine entlang der chilenischen Küste.

😞 Letztes Jahr untersuchten Wissenschaftler*innen zwei Inseln vor der chilenischen Küste und entdeckten 842 Brutpaare, bzw. aktive Nester. In diesem Jahr fanden sie nur ein einziges Brutpaar. 😳

Auch auf anderen Inseln gingen die Populationen zurück oder blieben gleich. Insgesamt ist das Szenario den Forschenden zufolge sehr besorgniserregend, sie warnen vor dem Aussterben der kleinen Pinguine, die nur an der Küste von Chile & Peru vorkommen.

Gefahren für die Pinguine sind u.a. Meeresverschmutzung & die Störung von Nistplätzen. Als weitere Gründe für den starken Populationsrückgang nennen Expert*innen v.a. die Vogelgrippe sowie das Wetterphänomen El Nino. Schon vor einigen Monaten hatten wir euch davon berichtet, dass die Vogelgrippe bis in antarktische Regionen vorgedrungen ist.

Vermüllung, Überfischung & das Risiko auf Zoonosen durch den Wildtierhandel müssen endlich eingedämmt werden, um das Artensterben endlich aufzuhalten. Dafür setzen wir uns auf allen Ebenen ein.
