The face of a girl who beat heartworm!

Meet sweet Emmylou! She sat for months in a rural shelter and we have no idea why because she is an absolute gem! She’s a easy going girl who loves to nap and snuggle with her people. She also loves to play and find all the smells in her backyard. She’s a social butterfly who loves all people, kids, and animals she meets.

She is fantastic in her crate, and is mostly potty trained. She’s a little particular about where she does her business and doesn’t prefer going on the leash as she’s currently used to a fenced in backyard as she does best with one. She’s continuing to learn house manners and leash training.

Emmylou is currently participating in our Bark and Heal training program and she is a rockstar! She works with kids ages 8-13 and absolutely loves them, and they adore her! They have taught her some basic skills including her name, sit, paw, and place. Her favorite thing is when they brush her and read her books, she loves to lay with them and get all the pets.

Emmylou would make a wonderful companion to any lucky family.

Hogan is simply the happiest boy! This 11-month-old pup weighs in at 65 pounds but he is gentle giant. His motto is “play hard, nap harder”. He loves a good game of fetch and enjoys chewing on a good bone, but his favorite activity is an afternoon nap! He has two foster brothers and has gotten along great with both of them. Hogan is a very smart pup and he is eager to please. He is already potty trained, knows basic commands, and is very treat motivated. The biggest thing Hogan has been working on with his foster is crate training. Being in the crate makes him anxious and it takes him time to settle down. He has made amazing progress is just one week, so he just needs someone who can continue to work on this with him! Hogan has so much love to give and is ready to find his forever family!

Stan’s Journey - Medical

Our buddy Stan got the full work up at our partnered vet.

All of his wounds look like they’re healing properly. We had to shaved a few spots to help with the healing process, and will keep tending his wounds till they are 100%.

Double ear infection is being treated.

Extreme dental disease causing the excess swelling in his face. He will be having multiple teeth extracted and a cleaning to help take care of this.

He has also begun his heartworm treatment, and will then receive his heartworm injections as well as be neutered.

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated to his care thus far, as well as his incredible foster family who is giving him the extra TLC he needs!

Hi, we’re new here!

Over FIFTY puppies were brought into a single rural shelter this week. 5-0. Today before the winter storm, we were able to save 6 puppies, and an adult who was hit by a car and has a broken leg.

There needs to be better spay/neuter laws. Breeding laws. Animal welfare laws. Please never stop educating your friends and neighbors on our current animal crisis.

Thank you to the volunteers and fosters that continue to fight for these buddies.

365 days
What we thought was going to be a “365 days and still not adopted” post, actually turned out to be the best post of all.

365 days ago, we drove through a tornado warning to pick up this sweet girl who was alone, actively in labor at a rural shelter.

On her 365th day in rescue, Chessie goes to her forever home.

Chessie had 3 beautiful babies - was the best mama until they eventually got adopted. Then completed physical therapy for an old injury. Then completed heartworm treatment. And through all of this, she grew more and more trusting and loving of humans, patiently waiting for her turn for forever.

So many people were involved on her journey. Many fosters, temp fosters, transporters, trainers, vet specialists. To say Chessie had a fan club is an understatement. Thank you to everyone who played any kind of role in her rescue journey.

And thank you to her forever family, for making 365 days absolutely worth it.

We love you, Chessie girl! Happy tails!

Some happy news for your Tuesday - our buddy Chip is home!

Chip was found wrapped in a dirty shirt on a bench at a bus stop. He was extremely lethargic and was rushed to the vet where he was hospitalized with parvovirus. After 5 days, our buddy pulled through and was strong enough to come home 🥹

He’s not completely in the clear yet. Parvo continues to shed for two weeks AFTER symptoms resolve, which is why following quarantine protocol with seemingly healthy puppies is so important to not spread the virus. We will continue to give him the supportive care he needs while getting him ready for adoption once he fully recovers!

A big thank you to all of the fosters and volunteers that had to come together to help this little buddy.

Bark & Heal is back in session featuring Miss Emmylou!

Emmylou came to us from Darlington SC and is our newest BB Bark & Heal pup! If you think Emmylou looks familiar, that’s because we were able to save her mom earlier this year 🥹 swipe to see Rosemary’s Bark & Heal photo from October & she has since been adopted!

About the BB Bark and Heal Program:

Alexander Youth Network provides comprehensive mental health treatment to children and adolescents through many services, one of them being Bark and Heal which was founded in 2018 with the goal of pairing children who have mental health and emotional challenges with canines to provide training and rehabilitation. This program is not only beneficial for the dogs who are receiving training that will allow for placement in homes, it also assists children with finding acceptance, building confidence and self-esteem through their dedicated responsibilities. We are excited to continue to save more pups like Emmylou who qualify for this program and will help change so many lives on their path to their forever home.

Emmylou will be available to go to her forever home in a few weeks after she graduates Bark and Heal!

Good boy Cooper Blue had the best staycation with his temp foster who is also a BB alum!

Cooper is a big boy with an even bigger heart. This 87lb, 7 year old boy might not be the fittest guy around but he is the full of love! He enjoys the little things in life like slowly strolling around the back yard, playing fetch with his stuffy, and rolling in the grass. On leash he is a strong boy, but he’s smart and doing better with each walk. He is house trained and hasn’t had any accidents, and oftentimes uses the bathroom right after being let outside. He does great in his crate at night and will even lay on his bed in his crate during the day. He loves toys, especially stuffies and has taken to an elephant stuffed animal that he carries around with him everywhere (even outside for potty breaks).

While he has a playful side, he spends most of his day just lounging around and napping. He absolutely loves belly rubs (and will collapse onto his back for them), cuddling (will literally sit in your lap (all 87lbs of him), and butt scratches. He’s a wonderful, loving boy who shouldn’t be spending his elder years on a cold hard shelter floor. He’d love to join your family!

PUPPY FOSTER NEEDED!

Little Lottie came to us from living outside, grabbed on the side of the road. She has an eye ulcer that’s currently being medicated and will be re-evaluated, and also has ringworm. We understand these medical issues seem less than appealing to foster - but we are happy to work with a dedicated foster to provide the supplies needed to keep everyone healthy and heal lottie up for adoption!

Cocoa is the sweetest [+ cutest] little buddy with such a fun personality! He loves to run around with the big dogs then curl up for snuggles. He’s doing great with potty training and making huge progress with crate training, working on sleeping through the night and is currently an early riser, getting better as he settles in! Cocoa has dog, cat, and human foster siblings and has been amazing with everyone!

Miss Emmylou is having a relaxing holiday month, as shortly after leaving the shelter we were able to get her heartworm treatment injections! Thanks to your donations and wishlist gifts, we had the funds that were needed as well as the supplies to keep her calm for treating this painful and preventable disease. Once she’s recovered, she will kick off our next round of Bark and Heal as she waits to be adopted by her forever family!

This is just the beginning of your story, sweet girl. The best is yet to come!

This little bb was surrendered in bad shape. We don’t know much other than she wasn’t eating, was having trouble breathing, has low body temp and blood sugar, and loaded with worms. She was just admitted to @carecharlotte where we await answers as they work to stabilize her. Thank you to the help of @voicesforlancaster.scanimals acting quickly to get her immediate attention, and to @billies_buddies friends jumping to action to help anyway they can for this little girl.
