Parvo‼️😖

Over the holiday we were working with a shelter who had a parvo outbreak with no available help. Sadly two of the pups pictured never made it out of the shelter, and we just had to make the call for Rosemary as she was beyond suffering 😔

That leaves us with Sage. She’s hospitalized and receiving everything she can to help give her a fighting chance.

This goofy guy LOVES dogs, humans, and pretty much everything! He is working on building up strength to help correct his joint laxity, so extra walks and/or playful pup companions are a huge plus.

Exciting news! Johnny graduated Bark & Heal, and went to his forever home!

About the BB Bark and Heal Program:

Alexander Youth Network provides comprehensive mental health treatment to children and adolescents through many services, one of them being Bark and Heal which was founded in 2018 with the goal of pairing children who have mental health and emotional challenges with canines to provide training and rehabilitation. This program is not only beneficial for the dogs who are receiving training that will allow for placement in homes, it also assists children with finding acceptance, building confidence and self-esteem through their dedicated responsibilities. We are excited to continue to save more pups like Emmylou who qualify for this program and will help change so many lives on their path to their forever home.

Each week, one of our fosters brings her foster dog to work with a small group of 5–6 kids in the program, all of whom are in the foster care system. Through Bark & Heal, the kids learn how to safely interact with dogs, practice basic training commands, and build confidence and connection in a safe, supportive space.

These kiddos don’t have traditional families, and most will spend Christmas at the facility. Billie’s Buddies will be sponsoring an AYN child this holiday season, and wanted to share their holiday wish lists for if anyone wanted to help make their holiday truly magical.

Thank you so much for considering, our foster pups bring these kids so much joy, and it would mean the world to show them a little extra love this holiday season. 💕🐶

Mr Pilot is received heartworm treatment injections today. He will be closely monitored and will hopefully be able to come home tomorrow.

Heartworm disease is caused by parasites that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of dogs. It’s spread by mosquitoes — one bite can pass along microscopic larvae that grow into long worms that damage the heart and lungs over time.

Heartworm injections kill the adult worms, but as the worms die, the body has to break them down and clear them out. If your dog’s heart rate or activity level gets too high, pieces of the dead worms can move into the bloodstream and cause dangerous blockages in the lungs.

Because of this, strict rest is essential for at least 30 days after injections — no running, playing, or excitement. Even if they’re feeling better, keeping their heart rate low could literally save their life.

Shelters are overflowing, and that means some dogs are being turned away. When someone can’t surrender a dog and feels stuck with the animal, they may try to give the dog away quickly — sometimes even for free.

But “free to a good home” can be dangerous. People looking for free pets can include backyard breeders, dog flippers, or even individuals involved in cruelty. Without an adoption fee or proper screening, there’s no way to ensure a dog ends up in a safe, loving home.

These three pups had to be turned away from our local shelter due to capacity, however the shelter knew the risk that put the pups in and quickly contacted rescues for help. We were glad we were able to get possession of the pups before they ended up elsewhere, and it could have very much been a life or death situation as we realized these pups were in rough shape.

They were extremely lethargic and barely moving, open mouth breathing, and one never opened his eyes. They are now being hospitalized and having bloodwork as well as other testing done.

Huge thank you to the BB crew who jumped into action to get these pups the help they needed. Here’s to better news tomorrow 🙏🏼

We are sad to say we are starting the week off with a medical Monday. Our sweet Charlie went from full of life to lifeless - a clear indicator we might be considering parvo. Our fears became reality with a positive parvo test and Charlie being hospitalized.

We know partnering with certain shelters and saying “yes” to unvaccinated or already sickly dogs means we are accepting a risk of medical unknowns, and I’m forever grateful our volunteers continue to be willing to take that risk in order to save the dogs others won’t.

So now we continue to fight. Hang in there, buddy🙏🏼
