For those who follow my personal page, i am sorry you get to see this twice.
Meet Rogue, she is my incredibly sassy special needs baby ❤️🐶 Rogue was born with bilateral cleft lip & palate, hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) and a heart murmur (it has been a 2/3 the past 2 years).
As a pet parent, animal advocate, and rescue running human- I am a huge believer in spaying and neutering your pets, especially if you have zero intentions on breeding. (I know i will get some negative feedback on this comment but even as a rescue human- i know there are good breeders out there who truely care about the breed and do what is right for their dogs) With the special needs babies, i like to wait until they are older, but Rogue is almost 4!!
With Rogue having hydrocephalus and the heart murmur I DID NOT spay her. I was so worried that she would not make it through surgery and the thought of losing her was not something I wanted to risk.
BIG MISTAKE!!
By not working with her veterinarian and neurologist I could have lost her this week.
Have you heard of Pyometra??
It is a severe uterine infection caused by a combination of hormonal changes (high progesterone after heat) and bacteria creating a perfect breeding ground in the thickened uterine lining, especially in unspayed, middle-aged females who haven't had puppies, making it a serious, life-threatening emergency.
I thought I was protecting my girl, avoiding a risky surgery and watching her like a hawk when she was in heat. In reality, I was putting her at risk. We were lucky, I noticed that something was off on Monday, she was NOT showing pyo symptoms- discharge was only blood (no infection oder), she was just off. Her vet and I decided to monitor over the holiday, she stopped bleeding, her energy picked back up! Then Thursday hit-she started bleeding again, still only blood, no oder. I was at the vet Friday morning getting an ultrasound and Friday afternoon she was in surgery.
We caught Pyometra before it really hit. Rogue never ran a fever, she never had a discharge other than blood until Friday. Had we waited this could have killed her.
Thank You Lauren Buckley and the amazing staff at Park Hills Animal Hospital for loving my girl and getting her home to me!
My 2026 PSA- Please SPAY and NEUTER your pets- Especially if you have zero intentions of breeding, we could have lost Rogue this week.
