Leash Training
Zero and I showing how to properly hold a leash and the beginning steps of walking on a leash. We all love walks with our furry friends, but when they pull and react to others it becomes a chore!

Release Words
Training “Release” commands is a great tool for your dog to learn. It’s a good indicator for your dog when the command is over. Zero knows “okay” and to train a release it’s as easy as saying the word and tossing the treat/toy away from your dog they are encouraged to move.
Spud is learning “Back”. This command is great for giving you space when trying to put down food/water or backing up from something we should not be exploring/eating. I’m putting my hand up and walking toward him to get that back up motion. Also furthering Spud’s “Hold” skills.
“Pose!”
Zero is learning to sit on his bottom upright. This is just for fun and as you can see Zero is catching on by sitting upright longer. I’ll be using the command word “Pose!”
Learning Recalls
Spud is learning “Come”. I am throwing the treats away from me to create distance and then getting his attention with sounds, not his name. Once he starts coming back to me I give lots of praise and treats! This can also be done with two people.
Learning new textures, noises, and items! I love training dogs that new things do not have to be scary! Lots of treating, along with pets and praise! Getting Spud to walk on cardboard, finding the treats on the bag and listening to all the different noises these items make.

And this is Zero showing off what “Stay” can develop into! I was able to go around the corner and next to the door with only giving the command once!

My best buddy Zero wanted to show off his skills as well! Zero did “Sit”, “ Spin”, “Stay”, and “Come”. I love teaching the fun tricks as well!

Spud now learning “Down”. I’m having him go into a “Sit” and then “Down” which can sometimes be easier for smaller dogs. I’m luring the treat to his side causing him to scoot his bottom back and lay down.

Spud is learning how to “Sit”. You’ll see that I am (nicely) pushing the treat against Spud causing him to go into a sit position, then treat and praise! At the end of the video you’ll see me using a fist to cue the sit. That is just the hand cue chosen for this skill. It is very important to have a hand cue for each behavior.
Always teaching the behaviors first then we add in the command and the hand gestures.

This week Spud is learning “Leave it”. A very important skill, not only for puppies, but for all age dogs to learn. This helps prevent dogs from eating something they’re not supposed to and to prevent unwanted chewing (carpet, shoes, etc.).
In the video(s) I am using freeze dried chicken and treating with his food. I am only treating and praising for when he leaves my hand alone.
Train the skill first, then add the command!
Crate training is an important part of your dogs training. It is very beneficial to all dogs. Zero is working on distance from me when the command is given. I use a clicker and the work “Yes” to mark what I want to see and occasionally treat with food. As you see Zero was hesitant at one point in the video and that is perfectly normal!

A flirt pole is a great way to burn off energy for dogs! Not only does it exercise their bodies, it exercises their natural instincts to hunt and chase prey! (It’s also just fun to do!)
Happy National Puppy Day! A fun trick to teach your puppy!
