Moe gave us a scare yesterday. After a visit to the vet (where she was given a clean bill of health, some B vitamins and an additive to help keep food in her digestive tract a bit longer to allow for better absorption) Moe decided to completely stop eating! Before I could even give her any of the new stuff, she was laying on her side a lot and had a terrible upset stomach. She was lethargic, dehydrated and wobbly, not allowing the bottle anywhere near her face. Since this is exactly how her brother behaved the day before he died, I was sad and scared. I woke up around 3am to check on her and she scrambled into my arms! She has now finished 2 bottles and is ready for bath time. Oh Moe! Don’t scare me like that!

We are going to continue to seek answers to her slower development, but she’s otherwise healthy and happy. She’s showing signs of Pituitary Dwarfism, but until she reaches a whole pound, it isn’t safe to draw blood to look for abnormalities. As experienced fosters, we know that our time with Moe could be short. But we plan to give her the happiest little life any little kitten could hope for!
Root for Moe!

At nearly 6 weeks old, Moe tips the scales at a mere 6 ounces. 6 week old kittens should weigh between 1-1/2 pounds!!

By the time she was 5 weeks old, she was still experiencing diarrhea and we started to notice her delayed development. Still refusing to wean, even though her teeth are growing in normally, bottle feeding continues, adding wet kitten food to her formula. She has not developed the ability to retract her claws, which usually happens around 2-3 weeks and she is still requiring stimulation to go potty. Her inability to control her bowel and bladder means she gets lots of baths. Here’s a before and after her “spa” session🤣

Moe developed diarrhea and began to show signs of malnutrition and dehydration the first week of November. She was weighing in at about .4lbs. A week later, she was down to .3lbs!! She was treated with antibiotics and we added a probiotic to her daily bottle feedings. She was back up to 0.4lbs by November 11th.

Moe’s brother, Miller lived for just one week, succumbing to malnutrition and dehydration after refusing to bottle feed. We did everything we could. Blood serum, subcutaneous fluids, hydration, force feeding, but his little body just gave up. He is buried near his namesake, Miller, our rescue McNab, who passed away peacefully in our home on October 10th, the day before Miller (the kitten) and Moe were born. Miller the dog was adopted by us in 2005. We miss him everyday. Loss is a part of love.

Moe is an absolute joy! But she is also quite a mystery! At 6 weeks old, Moe weighs only 6 ounces! (about 1/3 average size) Otherwise healthy, Moe is exhibiting signs of some type of feline dwarfism. She is placed in high need foster care through the local non-profit animal shelter. Born to a stray cat in Central Oregon, her mama abandoned the newborns after being spooked by a curious pup just after delivering Moe and her brother, Miller, on October 11, 2020. A Good Samaritan found them both, still in their amniotic sacs. They were cleaned, kept warm and hydrated, until they were brought to Brightside Animal Center in Redmond Oregon on October 13th. That’s when we got the call to foster the pair of neonates!
