Communication is key 🔑

Dogs are not born with the understanding of linguistics, but they can communicate in other ways. It’s not their job to learn these words, it’s our job as handlers to teach them.

This is a weird post, but one many can probably relate too. Giving and taking advice is something that happens all the time in the dog world; the good, the bad and the ugly.

Many professionals won’t give unsolicited advice because it’s not their business and it often falls on deaf ears. If you want professional advice, ask for it. Getting advice from your friends, family or neighbors can be harmful to your dog and your relationship to your dog.

Do a little research and always remember not every piece of advice applies to you. Remember your goals and don’t let anyone deter you from them.

Dogs learn what we teach them.

Duh.

It seems so obvious, but we overlook minor details with our dogs all the time. When I was teaching Finn to respect thresholds and setting boundaries he would stick his head out of our screen door. I didn’t think anything of it until I propped the door open one day and the threshold became a gray area to him.

Keep everything black and white for your dog and use these goofy moments as teaching moments!

I haven’t posted for a bit, a lot of life changes were happing before during and after I created this account. I’ve gone through multiple career changes and had a perfect baby. Professionally I’ve moved pretty far from working with dogs but that will never leave me. Personally, having a dog IS working with dogs, learning about dogs and perfecting our interactions with dogs. I’ve helped family and friends work their dogs through so many problems and I love doing so. I’m going to revive this account as a passion project. It will most likely end up being part personal dog journal and part business.

Happy new year!

I posted this for the 4th of July but it will most likely still apply tonight!

Late PSA: don’t take your dogs out while there are fireworks going off. Keep them inside, distracted (music, bone, anything) and contained so they don’t hurt themselves, especially if you are going out. Otherwise welcome in 2022 with them!!

I was going to go on a rant about how focus, patience and self awareness is probably the most important aspect of pet dog training. That’s the main objective while getting your dog in a heel and not chasing after every squirrel, car, bike, etc. The same idea applies to recall especially when recalling your dog off a squirrel, car, bike, etc. Even while crate training, some dogs may need a reminder to focus on being calming themselves down rather than ramping up anxious behaviors.

Anyways, I’ll spare you the long post and give you this video of Luna exercising focus, patience and self awareness with bugs on her snoot

During a relaxed play session 🎾 I decided to throw in a rep of leave it and utilizing an informal recall away from it (come is what I say to them around the house. We have a more formal emergency 🚨 recall). I rarely have to use this, but you don’t want to be caught with your pants 👖 down.

Because if your dog doesn’t respond to your commands, is it really trained?

Not all dogs are the same!

This is important to remember! If you live in a multi dog household and one dog is learning faster than another OR if you’ve had a past dog who excelled and was a quick learner.

Stay patient and try to understand why there is a disconnect. Maybe your not being clear enough. Maybe it’s too much information. Whatever the case may be patience and understanding will make you a better dog handler!

I can’t remember who initially made this post, but credit to them!

On this freezing cold day I just want to take a moment to remind you it will get warm again and you can do super cool things like this with your dog!

This photo is a few years old and took place soon after discovering the ins and outs of marker training,if you’ve met Luna before you know she’s a timid dog, but with proper marker training it took just a little coercing to get her onto the kayak and she was right at home

AG and Charlie practicing a functional heel with baby in tow in the beautiful

Using basic obedience can ensure your dog will understand and respect your baby’s boundaries. Charlie isn’t interacting with the baby and is being rewarded for that.

Here her only task is to stay behind AG and the stroller. Evolving from a regular stroller-less heel this positioning can help build confidence in dogs that may be scared of a stroller

Happy thanksgiving! I’m thankful for so much this thanksgiving, especially a happy, healthy, and growing family. As always we are so thankful for our dogs. They are definitely a huge part of anything we do.

Here are some tips to help make this thanksgiving as enjoyable as possible!

- Avoid giving your dog any table scraps, if your loved ones can’t resist feeding them, keep them (dog or loved one, we aren’t judging) in a separate room with something to occupy their time, like a Kong stuffed with a treat!

-Take the trash out or make sure it’s inaccessible! Dogs getting into the trash and finding bones from the delicious turkey they have been smelling for hours spells trouble!

-Get some exercise in with them early! Run the turkey trot with them or give them their own turkey bowl! A tired dog is generally an easier pup to work with!

-If your dog gets worked up with visitors around, slowly introduce the visitors. An east way to do this is with a crate, then a small room. The novelty of a new guest should slowly wear off (like a shaken soda can, it may still fizzle but we don’t want it getting all over you)

-Last but not least, be aware of your dogs proximity to nearby exits. The last thing anyone needs this holiday is a wild goose chase!

Again, and most importantly—have a happy thanksgiving! 🍽🦃🍁
