I was going to go on a rant about how focus, patience and self awareness is probably the most important aspect of pet dog training. That’s the main objective while getting your dog in a heel and not chasing after every squirrel, car, bike, etc. The same idea applies to recall especially when recalling your dog off a squirrel, car, bike, etc. Even while crate training, some dogs may need a reminder to focus on being calming themselves down rather than ramping up anxious behaviors.

During a relaxed play session 🎾 I decided to throw in a rep of leave it and utilizing an informal recall away from it (come is what I say to them around the house. We have a more formal emergency 🚨 recall). I rarely have to use this, but you don’t want to be caught with your pants 👖 down.

Using basic obedience can ensure your dog will understand and respect your baby’s boundaries. Charlie isn’t interacting with the baby and is being rewarded for that.
Here her only task is to stay behind AG and the stroller. Evolving from a regular stroller-less heel this positioning can help build confidence in dogs that may be scared of a stroller

Because I still can’t run with the dogs I’m continuing to bike with them. They get SUPER amped up when we do things like this, but before we hit the road I spotted a package on our porch that I brought inside and left Luna next to the bike in a down-stay.
Here she is USING the training. Granted this isn’t the middle of Times Square, but there are still plenty of distractions around her — squirrels, cars, pedestrians, and most importantly NOT me.
The ability to do this really just boils down to clear communication
Luna will go to any length to play fetch. Even if it doesn’t include the “fetch” part. 😂
When the weather is dreary like it is today taking the dogs out and running them may seem like more trouble than it’s worth. Personally having 3 long hair dogs already makes enough of a mess. Having 3 muddy long hair dogs AND an infant is a bit much.
Fortunately we can all heed the advice from @larrykrohn “Train don’t drain” giving dogs mental stimulation is more likely to keep them from going stir crazy than trying to wear them out. In Larry’s words “a tired dog isn’t a good dog it’s just becoming a fitter asshole”
I’m not a weatherman but I’ve lived in Cleveland all my life. The weather usually doesn’t get much better than this, this time of year, so train your dogs and keep them stimulated!!
