The rise of “Pet-Friendly Venues”… especially here in Bangkok, does your dog really enjoy them?🐾 Whilst it’s wonderful we can take our dogs more places especially in Asia, remember, it’s not “natural” for dogs to be in busy, enclosed, human-centric spaces—noisy, stimulating environments can feel overwhelming. Here’s how to help outings be more enjoyable for both of you:✨ Step 1: Meet Their Needs FirstBefore heading into any pet-friendly venue, make sure your dog is physically, mentally, and emotionally fulfilled. A good 30–45 minutes of walking, a chance to toilet, sniffing, or playing (depending on your dog’s preferences) can help them decompress and feel grounded. 🐕💨✨ Step 2: Choose WiselyPick the right environment and timing—off-peak hours are best, especially if you’re still working through training or have a sensitive/nervous/fearful/reactive dog.✨ Step 3: Set BoundariesTell staff or strangers not to touch your dog if it makes them uncomfortable 🚫✋, and choose a quiet spot in the venue (like a cozy corner) where your dog can feel safe. 🛋️✨ Step 4: Check InIf your dog shows signs of stress, it might mean the environment is too much. Take note and adjust for next time!Modern life makes it easier to include our dogs in more spaces, which is amazing—but their needs come first as to expect them to “stay” or “behave” in these moments is unfair. Not all dogs are dogs that truly want, nor need to go out in this way with us. And that’s ok ☺️✨🤍Pet friendly venues and days out to new places in general done well can be a wonderful experience, please consider your dog, venues staff, other people’s dogs and the steps that may need to be taken in the meantime. 📣Thank you to wonderful venues in Bangkok already setting customers and their dogs up for a successful experience 🙏🏻✨ KEEP AN EYE OUT for caring venues across Bangkok sharing this to their customers 🤍🐾 If you’re unsure how to na
Alix prepares for overseas travel and a forever home!
Great News!Gorgeous Alix from Pariah Dog Koh Samui shelter is all set for her new life and is about to fly to Germany to meet her forever family! 🎉✨
Together with @pawsandflawsdogtraining, our shared mission is to prepare shelter and ex-street/free-roaming dogs for domestic life.
We focus on understanding their unique needs, maximizing their well-being in shelter care, and setting them up for success in their new homes.
This preparation not only helps them adapt but also increases their chances of staying in their forever families. 🤞🏼🥰🤍
Preparation over reaction, equipping dogs (and humans) with tools and confidence ahead of time makes everything smoother and less stressful.
A huge shoutout to Team Pariah for prioritizing this goal and seeing it through! 🙌🏻
So, how did we prep Alix?

Did you know that music can be a game-changer for soothing dogs? 🎶
Research shows that dogs tend to relax when listening to soft rock, classical, or reggae. These genres can help ease stress and create a calm environment—but here’s the trick: keep the playlist varied.
Playing the same songs over and over might make your dog tune out (pun intended).
Music can act as a gentle white noise during challenging moments like thunderstorms, noisy evenings, or even just day-to-day life. Personally, I love using soft tunes while working—it’s like setting a “chill zone” vibe. It’s also great for masking outside sounds that might make them anxious, like traffic or neighbours (Whilst they are still learning)
🤍Every dog is unique, so it’s worth experimenting to see what works for yours. Start with these genres, mix it up, and pay attention to their reactions.
You might even discover your dog has a favorite song!

Ever wonder why your dog has started a new behaviour habit? 🤔
🧠Dogs learn in two main ways
1) By making connections and associations
2) By experiencing consequences (positive or negative).
Understanding this can make a world of difference in your training journey!
🤓Dogs are masters at picking up patterns, and unlike us humans—who tend to be more static learners—they’re fluid learners, always observing, adapting, and soaking up information from their surroundings.
This means that everything we do around them teaches them something, even when we don’t realize it! 🤯🙈
When we truly understand how dogs learn, it becomes easier to shape behavior in ways that benefit both of us whilst taking care of them with more understanding 💛
💫Every routine, reaction, and reward becomes an opportunity to build trust, teach new skills, and even deepen your bond.
Imagine a training journey where you and your dog are learning together—understanding their unique way of picking up on cues can turn everyday moments into powerful lessons.
Be mindful of what you may or may not be communicating to your dog, they very rarely do something “out of nowhere” or “for no reason”.
My dog walker accidentally trained my dog to not come near the bedroom every time I ran the tap or shower upstairs (because the shower was there) and every time she called him to the room it was only for a shower. He doesn’t mind the shower but didn’t run at the chance of a shower so we worked on calling up stairs and also an association with the shower 💛

Calling ALL SPACE INVADERS!
Just because a dog sniffs you doesn’t mean they’re into you! - sorry! But it’s true 😬
🚫So try to resist those wiggly fingers and wanting palms reaching out for delightful dog strokes 🫳🏼🫲🏼
👃 Dogs use their nose to gather information, so a sniff is often just their way of checking you out—it doesn’t always mean they’re ready for petting.
🧠 If you’re unsure on the next moves please try to remember these:
• Avoid stroking unknown dogs over the head. Reaching over their head can feel intimidating
• Skip waving your hand out for them to sniff. Instead, let them approach you on their own terms.
👍🏻If the dog seems relaxed, loose body language and potentially leaning into you as you touch them, try a gentle scratch on the chest or side of the neck then down the side of the body which is usually less intrusive.
💛You can always ‘test’ by giving breaks and if they want you to carry on or not you’ll know, this is wonderful for communication between the two of you 💛
If they pull away, give you side eye or seem tense, give them space. Respecting a dog’s boundaries helps build trust and creates safer, more positive interactions!
If they come back for more then great! You’re in!

😲Did you know massage isn’t just for humans?
It can be a game-changer for dogs, especially those with disabilities and also for those that are more emotionally sensitive / alert.
🐕Massaging your dog helps release tension from their body, relaxes their muscles, and calms their nervous system—perfect for dogs who may struggle with mobility or experience pain.
This intentional touch isn’t only a great way to relax together (I’d advise you focus on your deep breathing as you massage); it can also be used when they’re feeling frightened, panicked, or agitated (depending on their individual needs and triggers of course!).
✨I’ve seen the impact firsthand, particularly with fearful anxious dogs, as massage provides comfort, relief, and can feel so good when done correctly 🙂
💪🏻To get started, use slow, circular motions with the palm of your hand on their chest and a fair amount of pressure, then once the dog is moving with your motion add in a little extra pressure with your finger tips.
Then add in your other hand on their neck with slow, slight firm pressure circular motions with your finger tips on their shoulders, and neck.
🕵🏻 Watch for signs of comfort like soft eyes, relaxed breathing, or leaning into your hand. 💛🙌🏻
Be mindful of sensitive spots—many dogs may be protective of areas like their paws, tail, or lower back.
🚨 Pay attention to their body language: if they pull away, yawn, lick their lips, side eye or stiffen up, give them space or switch to a gentler touch.
Massaging can bring huge benefits, but respecting your dog’s comfort and signals is key to making it a positive experience.
Not every dog likes to be touched and so massage may not be suitable for everyone straight away.
💛🙏🏻Such a pleasure to share this with the humans and massage the doggos from @my.disabled.hairy.friends who lapped up every minute! Thank you for being so wonderful!
Happy Saturday!
At the Haven Shelter in Koh Samui, (first visit for me) we worked on the fundamentals as their first session: dog body language, group communication, safe outdoor walks, essential skills and trust-building to minimize fear and frustration.
By teaching these foundational skills, we’re setting dogs up for success both in the shelter and in future homes🐾
💛At Paws and Flaws and now the shelters I deeply believe in, we all believe shelter / rescue behaviour training and education is essential because it not only improves each dog’s welfare while they wait for a home but also builds essential skills and confidence for life beyond the shelter.
💪🏻 With the right support, these dogs can thrive, form lasting bonds with humans, and transition smoothly into forever homes.
Great work, Team Haven!
Thank you for all you do! 🙏🏻🐕✨☀️
