What is your dogs body language telling you?

🔎A few general examples of areas to look out for with fearful or neutral happy dogs. These signals can vary in intensity depending on the context and dog.

⭐️It’s super important if you haven’t already, get reading up on your dogs body language signals and what they could be telling you BEFORE what seems like a ‘out of nowhere’ reaction arises.
🤔 Here’s 5 reasons why:

1. Safety - Recognizing signs of stress, fear, or aggression can prevent bites and other dangerous situations for both humans and dogs.

2. Communication - Dogs communicate primarily through body language. Understanding their signals helps strengthen the bond between you and your dog so they feel understood, heard and frustrations are less all round.

3. Training - Effective training relies on interpreting your dog’s responses accurately. Knowing their comfort level can guide your training methods.

4. Health - Changes in body language can indicate health issues. Early detection of discomfort or pain can lead to prompt veterinary care.

5. Emotional Wellbeing - Recognizing when your dog is anxious or happy helps create a supportive environment, promoting their overall emotional health when you can then decide what to do with the important information.

By learning to read your dog’s body language, you can ensure a safer, healthier, and happier relationship with your pet with deeper understandings catching those moments before build ups.

Something not discussed much…owner / pet parent / handler / guardian / guilt.

Guilt with a dog in your care is a thing and a big one … even if your dog is happy and healthy guilt can still creep in and then due to your emotions around this can cause behavioural shifts from you and your dog your dog with extra hormones in the home.

Guilt whether that be due to going on holiday without your dog and they come back from boarding ‘different’, moving home, new partner or baby, working long hours as a family or single dog owner and not being able to keep up every training practice somedays…

✨We can all only do what we can, with what we currently know and our current capacity

Try to adjust in some aspects, to improve in perhaps one area with your dog and then move forward✨

Feel free to share “what are your biggest guilts with your dog or how do you manage them?” - you are definitely not alone 🤍 👇

Also: We don’t get the dog we want, we get the dog we need 🤍 or so they say. Look and listen and you’ll see 🙂

And a big shoutout to all the dog lovers for helping their dogs through any tricky moments even when you also have yours 🤍🐾

Dog trainer, behaviourists, behaviour trainers, dog therapists and all the other titles/labels…

“Should be
Should do
Shouldn't this and that
And more...”

Every person is unique and offers services in their own way with where they are currently at.

We are also forever growing and learning too to
Be better
For you
For your dog
For ourselves
For our dogs

Media - Should we do reels, do quirky music, show this, show that
We shouldn’t look a certain way or should look a certain way to be taken seriously / behave a certain way ... (many things I’m seeing and hearing at the moment)

Again - everyone is individual and will express in a way that they know or the stage they are currently at

It's a process for us too.

Personally -
I have other interests outside of dogs, but yes they are my current main focus and 99% of my life.

I wear make up sometimes, sometimes I don't,

I wear a uniform yes, it's one less decision in the morning before a long day

I use music on videos as I LOVE music and the story it can tell not to make it a performance.
Plus you don't get full context from a training clip online anyways…

I have no huge plan to what I do online and just show when I can at the moment, when you’re in the hands on thick of the work, it’s tricky 😅.

🤍Behaviour work is a sensitive / serious topic sometimes with so many emotions involved from everyone
and I personally like to bring some light along the way

⭐️Everything depends, we are all unique and doing what we can and our best at the moment

🤍Love to all dog professionals, households, shelters and anyone doing what they can with where they are at right now.

Time to work 💪🏻🐾
Shoutout and a big thank you to for allowing me to work with and family at his facility Essentials before the next stages.

🤍More trainers supporting dogs and their families together is what’s needed in this industry...
One cannot do all or offer all, plus there is not one fit for all either.

Different or not, we can all learn from eachother and....

It’s about the dogs, right?🙂🙌🏻

If you’re thinking of getting a dog….

Think more, plan too - (please share) 🙏🏻

1) Dog’s can be 15 + year commitment

2) Do you have the finances for unexpected vet bills, boarding or potential country relocation if you ever move
(If not right now, can you save incase?)

3) Do you have a back up / or a couple of options should you ever take ill and can no longer look after your dog

4) Are you prepared to make adjustments to put in training work / plus cost of this at the beginning and maybe throughout if behaviours change

5) Are you capable physically, most dogs require regular exercise. (Yes there are some exceptions for both human and dog) and emotionally - not every dog is able to be a therapy dog and if used as one can have a negative effect on the dog

6) Is your environment and lifestyle currently suitable for the dog you have in mind (research required)

7) Have you looked into suitable vets and any additional support you may need along the way, suitable day care, boarders or a walker

✉️As inboxes fill with families rehoming their dogs
(I also work in rescue on case by case)

while yes some cases are unavoidable for various reasons and sometimes be better for the dog

this is just a kind reminder for the dogs and families affected by this increase in rehomings and others to really ask themselves the questions 🤍

🐾Rescuers are fuller than ever, shelters are maxed out and most dog trainers in person are capped with their time able to dedicate to each case.

I will add more to this soon but just some thoughts that came up this moment.

3 ways to boost your dog’s confidence 🐾

Firstly, every dog is unique, and what works for one might not work for another. However, see below for general fun and engaging activities that can help 😊

Play confidence-building games 🎲
- Engage your dog in games such as box sniffing, where they find treats hidden in boxes, gradually increasing the difficulty in box tower levels, hidden levels and maybe adding in other textures. This can help achieve small milestones and boost their confidence.
-Tug of war is another great game; let your dog win sometimes to make them feel accomplished.

Engage in scent work 🕵️‍♀️
- Incorporate scent work into your routine with activities like hiding treats around the house (go find) or challenging them to find specific scents in more complex environments (man trailing). Successfully completing these tasks can significantly enhance their self-esteem.

Introduce swimming 💧
- Swimming can be fantastic for building confidence, especially for anxious dogs. Start slowly, allowing them to enjoy the water at their own pace. The physical activity and sense of achievement release feel-good hormones, boosting their confidence over time. ✨Separate video on swimming soon ✨

Remember - every dog and human dynamic is different. Always observe your dog’s body language. If they’re showing loosey goosey body movements, happy signals and are eager to continue, keep going! If not, take a step back, re assed and adjust or try again later after they have had a break.

Building confidence should be a fun and positive experience for both you and your dog. Have fun and celebrate every small win along the way🐶💪

If you have any further questions on these or more comment below “Confidence” and I’ll DM you with options and more details 👇

This will be the last walk for May as I fly to Europe again tonight to visit my mother.
Wanted to share a thought of isolation and community...

It can be so isolating for some sometimes when working with your dog and also busy with your own work life which can equal to not having many around you in a similar situation that 'get it' ...

I believe in these safe, non judgmental community walks to create support, understanding, positive experience for the dogs and showing humans and their dogs that they are not alone.

Thank you all for your dedication, love and supporting your dogs and yourself dogs through tricky moments 🙏🏻✨

“Thoughts then produce feelings / emotions which then impacts behaviour”

If we can reprogram our thoughts, it will affect our emotions and therefore behaviour outcomes will be different. Dogs cannot do this, however we can spot the signs before the behaviour builds.

Want to know how and what to do in these moments for yourself and your dog? 🤔

📢Workshop prep (ahh filming🙈) for the up and coming FREE WORKSHOP on yours and your dogs Stress Managment and Wellbeing, Ist June in Bangkok 9am.

Discussing how our thoughts, emotions and behaviours can have an impact on our dogs behaviour and vice versa.

Covering various areas of the is plus self doubt, what is doing enough, guilt, frustration, household dynamics and the human - dog relationship.

⭐️Offering guidance, tools and how to’s.

If you’re interested please comment “Workshop” for invite details 🙂

My dog reacts ‘out of nowhere’ - a common sentence said often 🤔

This can come from a build up throughout the day, days, be linked to health, their environment or any changes.

Getting to know your dog’s body language & identifying firstly their stress signals early can help you understand how your dog feels before their stress/ anxiety escalates into a full blown reaction and then the cup (as I like to call it) fills and fills and overflows time and time again (aka over their threshold) 🤯

👀 Slide through the images to see some signs to look out for, try to work out the way behind the signal and then you will be more equipped on how to help them ⬆️

👇What’s next 👇
Whatever the why behind the stress/ fear/ anxiety, humans must firstly

1️⃣Try to keep your cool 💆🏻‍♀️ otherwise your dog will sense your panic also, depending on the situation and dog the how can vary. Reach out if you have a specific question 🙋‍♀️

Feel free to share any signals you’ve noticed from your dog ⬇️

Let’s normalize this 👇
🚨Know the breed (and yourself) before you get the dog.

😩Too many strong working breeds such as German Shepards, Dobermans, Boxers, Labrador Retrievers, Boarder Collie & Terriers to name but a few are ending up in the wrong families and household lifestyles and this could have been prevented in the first place.

The dogs are paying the price for this, are under stimulated, under fulfilled for their physical and mental needs, ill health mostly due to the breeder and their current environment and much more.

🌟Research the breed you’re looking into, triple check if you’re getting them from a reputable breeder, perhaps even volunteer to work with the breeds before getting one and see all documentation’s as well as ask yourself

A) Does this dogs needs suit my lifestyle (for example getting hunting breed but hoping they will want to stay in mostly as a sofa dog from a young age), can I actually fulfill them long term with what they need?

B) Am I emotionally, financially and physically ready to care for a dog, any dog, to meet their needs, even in tricky times and really dedicate time and work (be honest)

C) Is everyone else in the home on board too (very important factor, separate post on this)

👂I hear so often, “Susan down the road had a lovely Labrador so we want one too”
“Oh but I grew up with this type of dog … I want one”

First, dogs are individuals with unique people raising them with variable outcomes
Second, times have changed in our environments compared to when most of us were younger.

🐕And if you decide to adopt a mix breed, mongrel then try to gather as much information on their back story as possible and ask yourself will you put in the work?

In both cases, do the research ask yourself the honest questions.

There are so many dogs breeds and non breeds thrown on the streets abandoned, abused and in shelters because they ended up in the wrong household from the get go.

The dogs don’t deserve it and you also deserve dog that’s as best match for you too. 🤍

Congrats on your new pup! And welcome to A LOT OF (fun 😉)WORK 😅 Let’s go!

Please see the slides for basic GENERAL starting pointers and below for a few additional pointers ☺️

⏰ I would also recommend taking some time off when first bringing home a puppy, a week or a long weekend, and prepare for the evening routines of waking up every 2-3 hours (before they start to bark, this will make your life easier later!) to let out for their toilet and middle of the night feed.

Praise when they p*e / poo in the desired spot. Outside ideally is more natural to them and mentally stimulating.

🐾 Puppies need around 20 hours of nap time so perfect opportunity’s to practice separation / crate time or place work if you’re there yet and you choose that route and also some moments when they are awake.

🚶‍♀️ The older they get you can add on the duration of your walks (great time to build connection and desensitise to the outside world) and ideally aim for 1 hour bare minimum of walking time per day slowly building up and adding in different environments.

🌟Point #1 regarding wearing a leash in the house for the first 1-2 weeks- once they’ve been shown the boundaries, you can move to dropping the leash and they drag it for a further week or so.

👁️ Yes, you will need to keep an eye on them also in the beginning for safety of eating things, toileting, getting caught in the leash and to guide them when needed.

SET THEM UP FOR SUCCESS by following through with what you ask and guiding them to make the right decisions.

🤍Reward a state of calm from the get go. It’s unfair to expect them to find their calmer state if their breed and specific needs aren’t met. So make sure these are met then in between you can reward the calmer moments.

🌟It can be beneficial to use your affection, toys and food as rewards during the learning process. Use those resources (this will be very beneficial down the line) 🌟🐾

25/03/2024

This dog had minimal guidance from his human, pulled intensely, reactive towards others, lots of pent up energy, very strong, nearly pulling her over plus mixed signals holding a treat up and then not getting it.

He is a boisterous, likely under-fulfilled young male who requires many of his dog specific needs to be met daily to avoid frustrations alongside his human building up her confidence working with him.

But for now if you’re in this situation as above 👆

Relax your body posture, drop your shoulders, keep your head up, breathe and smile (cheesy but it can help). Keep a good hold of the leash handle and loose the ‘T Rex tense arm’ 🦖😁

If you’re using food, keep the food behind you so you don’t accidentally end up bribing your dog, or the hand in the food pouch becomes the cue-marker with the next communication steps when you use them.

And refrain from holding food in front of your body if they are fixated initially unless there’s a training goal here 👆🏻

“I wish I had done these trips with him sooner"
"I wish I'd of taken more time off earlier on in his time with me"
“I wish I could be there for every walk”
I wish, I wish ...

Most people I speak to client or not have dog regrets, shame or guilt with past dogs or current dogs, feelings of not doing enough, not doing things 'right' and so on...
Me too.

What I can say is, dear dog lovers, most of you are doing the best with what you can at this moment in time and with the information you currently know.

Next year you may know more and things may be better or different then you'll look back to now and 'wish' you knew now, unfortunately that's how it goes.

The guilt, worry and wishing can only taint our experiences...

Let go and bloody smash this journey
for you and your dog!💪🏻💥

Does YOUR daily behaviour pattern align with your dog training behaviour dog goals? 🤔 Fitting technical training session...
11/03/2024

Does YOUR daily behaviour pattern align with your dog training behaviour dog goals? 🤔

Fitting technical training sessions into busy everyday lives can be a huge challenge.

🧠 However, think of patterns of behaviour, your patterns in particular that are done all the time without thinking. And keep them to the front of your mind that like us, dogs are continually learning

🔑 Therefore make sure that what your dog is learning at times of interaction from you and at home IN BETWEEN specific training sessions IS supporting your behaviour training behavioural goals, NOT doing it a disservice.

💭For example, if a dog finds something rewarding, whether it comes from us or the environment (birds, cats, smelly bag of old food outside) the dog will do more of that behaviour as the behaviour will be self-reinforcing, or reinforced by the environment😅

So if your dog is making undesirable choices and the environment is rewarding them, this massively can go against what we are trying to teach them🙈

Using jumping up on people as an example:
Starting from a sweet puppy jumping up for attention, the human then ends up cuddling, talking, and maybe sometimes giving food to them as they jump up to the table during dinner time. The puppy’s sees they get rewarded for doing this and the TIMING of the reward can act as a marker in that moment showing the puppy they should do more of that. Therefore, the pup learns the pattern of jump up on the human is the right thing to do because that’s what we reward. There isn’t really a ‘wrong or right’ but for the sake of this point I’ll use that wording.

Then later down the line the human tries to stop the pup jumping up for everything. But sometimes still rewards in various ways, pup gets very confused, maybe even frustrated and out comes the un wanted behavioural patterns 🌀

Point🚨 If you’re not consistent in your approach to behavioural patterns on what you’re showing them in between sessions, including everyone in the household being on the same page (very important), you’re going to cause confusion for your dog and the inconsistent good/unwanted behaviours begin to appear in various shapes and forms.

01/03/2024

Our hormones and stress levels matter can impact our dogs🧐

It’s true! 👃 With the power of their incredible nose that allows them to detect changes in our hormonal levels, including stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol 🤓 they can sense and smell our mood.
In fact, studies have shown that dogs can pick up on increased stress in their owners even before the humans realise it themselves! 🤯

But… here’s the kicker – while this sensitivity can be beneficial, especially for therapy dogs who can anticipate panic attacks and provide support, it can also have a downside…
🐾Dogs that aren’t trained for such tasks can easily become stressed themselves when they sense their owners’ stress levels rising 📈🐶

This is particularly important to consider if you have a nervous, anxious, or sensitive pup who may struggle to cope with additional stress, making them much worse.

Any links to leash reactivity? 🐕💼
Ohh yes, when dogs feel unsafe or stressed while on a leash, they may exhibit reactive behaviour outbursts as a means of protecting their humans and themselves.
In addition to this, a stressed-out human holding the leash may unknowingly convey tension to their dog, increasing the situation. 😖

That’s why it’s crucial to maintain a relaxed and fluid body language while walking your dog.

🙏🏻YOU: Taking care of your own mental & emotional well-being is just as important as caring for your canine companion’s! 🌟

So, as you work on managing your stressors and any anxiety, be sure to equip yourself with skills and techniques specific for you to navigate challenging moments with your dog.

🌟 Stay tuned for more tips, techniques on how to navigate these situations and keep those emotions in check whilst helping your dog through theirs.

📸 Here this lady was carrying tension in her body, resulting in a very tense leash paired with lack of confidence on what to do with her dog whom was also stressed, anxious and non confident.
We started by body adjustments and advocating for her dog when they walked.

Feel free to share anyways in which you stay calm with your dog in tricky situations 👇
