The sunchoke patch is turning into a sunchoke jungle after the recent heat wave. Soon the plants will be full of small yellow flowers and will be covered in buzzing pollinators. 🌼🐝🌼🐝🌼
We grow 4 different varieties of that range in color, sizes and flavors that will be available throughout the winter and into spring 2025.
The process….
We select the most vigorous tubers from the past growing season to be this season plant. We grow sunchokes in grow bags to prevent the tubers from spreading and to make harvest time easier. 100 grow bags are filled with organic rich soil and 4-6 large tubers are planted in each grow bag.
Drip irrigation is installed to take care of the watering needs and each grow bag is amended with organic compost tea throughout the growing season to feed the plants.
The plants will eventually die back in the winter and then we will start harvesting the tubers after several weeks of cold exposure. To harvest, we just dump out the grow bags on a tarp and gather up the tubers we need for sale that week and set aside the most vigorous looking tubers for next seasons plants.
This low maintenance, high yielding crop has been a game changer for our small farm because we can produce a lot of food in a small area and we can generate more income during the slower months of winter.

Growing leafy greens in the summer can be tough especially when nature hits you with consecutive days at 100+ degrees outside. 🌞 🥵🥬 Lettuce greens are one of our top sellers at the farmers market so we have to go the extra mile to make sure they get exactly what they need to grow in the extreme heat. Lots of water throughout the day and 50% shade cloth applied during the hottest part of the day is our recipe for growing greens in the summer.

When we moved to our new home that had more space to grow, I made a goal to utilize that space to try new things and grow more food.
Something I have been working on this season is growing at scale to sell alongside our leafy greens. I have always grown tomatoes for personal use but this season I’m growing 4 different varieties of cherry tomatoes that will be combined to make a colorful basket.
The process…
40 tomato plants were transplanted into 7 gallon fabric pots and drip irrigation was setup to take care of the daily watering needed to keep the plants healthy. Tomatoes are heavy feeders so I give them a top dressing of organic fertilizer periodically throughout the growing season so the plants can thrive in their 7 gallon pot. The plants are trellised by twine as they grow and aggressively pruned to help with airflow.
So far, This project has been a success and I’m already thinking of ways to improve the process for next season.

Late night lettuce planting session 💡🌱😵‍💫
We will be taking some time off in June to be with family so it’s very important to have our outdoor crops dialed in. 9 days away from the farm means most indoor microgreens production will come to a halt and we will be relying on our lettuce crops to keep us afloat during the down time. 🤞🏾

Old crops heading to the compost pile to make room for new varieties. Our focus will always be leafy greens but now that we live in a different planting zone, we can grow some new crops that will complement our greens nicely.

The last of the outdoor lettuce is getting harvested, washed and packaged up for our Saturday farmers market in Folsom, California.

We hit the ground running at our new location to make sure we had some outdoor crops available for our customers this season. Even though we got a late start to growing and had to build a space from scratch, we actually harvested a lot of food from our garden this season.

Exciting news!!!!! I’m happy to announce that we have been chosen as one of the micro grant recipients for 2023. This is a special honor to be recognized alongside other amazing small farms in California for this opportunity.
Bootstrapping a business can be financially difficult when the time comes to make large upgrades to elevate the business to the next level but with the assistance from this micro grant we can finally make some serious upgrades to our that will allow us to grow more food while also drastically reducing our energy consumption.

Did you know that the was the 1st grocery store that we partnered with back in 2019?
I still remember how happy I was to see our in the produce section for the first time and knowing I was on the right path with the business. I took the leap to full time grower that same year and never looked back. There has been a lot of changes to our business since those early days but finding our microgreens in the produce section is something you can always count on! (unless they’re sold out because they move fast 😉)

6 months ago, I was worried about the future of the business because we were unexpectedly forced to move out of Tahoe on a short notice but our new location in Camino is just what we needed to take the business to the next level.
We hit the ground running at our new location with more space, better growing conditions and a new outlook on our business model that focuses on working smarter, not harder.

Fall is in the air and our salad mix is back in stock at the Folsom Farmers Market 🥬 I love this time of the year when all of our greens are happy with the colder weather and we have a full menu for our market customers.

Don’t forget that the Folsom Farmers Market goes on year round so you can find us there every Saturday from 8-1pm.

“I don’t eat kale”
I hear people say this all the time at the farmers market and it’s sad because kale is extremely nutritious and delicious.

“It’s bitter”🤢
“it’s tough”👞
“My kids hate it” 🙅‍♂️
“I don’t know what to make with it”🤷‍♂️

Those are the famous last words of people who eventually try micro kale. The delicate texture, mild kale flavor and ease of use in most meals keep people coming back for more kale 🌱

Shoutout to my mom for attending her first farmers market this weekend! 👩‍🌾

She lives in a rural area of North Dakota so the farmers market vibe is different and a lot smaller but that didn’t stop her from selling out of all of her and making a little cash on the weekend. Here booth presentation looks great and honestly, her microgreens would compete with most of the ones I see being sold by full time growers.
Good job mom!!!

You’ve asked for it 🙋🏼‍♀️, you’ve waiting patiently for it 💆🏼‍♀️and it’s finally here! 🥬

All of the big changes to our business has slightly delayed our salad greens production but Im happy to announce that it’s finally back in stock! Moving location on short notice was tough but the new spot has more space and better temperatures that will allow us to grow our salad greens throughout the season and have them available more often at our market booth.
