It’s been a fun summer season but it’s almost time to say goodbye to tomatoes and make room for more fall leafy greens 🍅✌🏾
After a long and hot tomato season… I’m officially burnt out on tomatoes. Planting, pruning, trellising, fertilizing, more pruning and harvesting cherry tomatoes seems all good in March but it’s October now and I’m officially burnt out on tomatoes. Did I mention I’m officially burnt out on tomatoes 😵‍💫🍅😵‍💫🍅😵‍💫

Took advantage of cooler temperatures this week and planted over 400 lettuce starts in the garden. Lettuce prefers the cooler weather but that didn’t stop us from growing some amazing summer lettuce this season. Fall is approaching and with it comes optimal leafy green growing conditions. Im really excited to grow even more lettuce this fall and also work with some different cold weather varieties.

I starting growing tomatoes this season for the farmers market and they have been a great addition to our small farm. There’s so many different varieties of tomatoes to choose from but I focused on growing 4 different varieties of cherry tomatoes because of their popularity and the high yields per square foot.

Introducing our newest product available at the Folsom Farmers Market… Fresh packed culinary herbs for your next meal 🌿 🤗
We had a customer at the beginning of the season suggest that we start growing fresh herbs to fill a void in the availability of herbs at market so we took the advice and ran with it. Catch us in Folsom every weekend at the farmers market on Saturdays from 8-1pm.

The sunchoke patch is turning into a sunchoke jungle after the recent heat wave. Soon the plants will be full of small yellow flowers and will be covered in buzzing pollinators. 🌼🐝🌼🐝🌼
We grow 4 different varieties of that range in color, sizes and flavors that will be available throughout the winter and into spring 2025.
The process….
We select the most vigorous tubers from the past growing season to be this season plant. We grow sunchokes in grow bags to prevent the tubers from spreading and to make harvest time easier. 100 grow bags are filled with organic rich soil and 4-6 large tubers are planted in each grow bag.
Drip irrigation is installed to take care of the watering needs and each grow bag is amended with organic compost tea throughout the growing season to feed the plants.
The plants will eventually die back in the winter and then we will start harvesting the tubers after several weeks of cold exposure. To harvest, we just dump out the grow bags on a tarp and gather up the tubers we need for sale that week and set aside the most vigorous looking tubers for next seasons plants.
This low maintenance, high yielding crop has been a game changer for our small farm because we can produce a lot of food in a small area and we can generate more income during the slower months of winter.

Growing leafy greens in the summer can be tough especially when nature hits you with consecutive days at 100+ degrees outside. 🌞 🥵🥬 Lettuce greens are one of our top sellers at the farmers market so we have to go the extra mile to make sure they get exactly what they need to grow in the extreme heat. Lots of water throughout the day and 50% shade cloth applied during the hottest part of the day is our recipe for growing greens in the summer.
