Obie and Catie debuted an Intermediare I Freestyle at the August HITS Dressage shows. It had been 10 months since Obie had been to a show so there were a few "cobwebs" to shake off. It was a successful venture with the 2nd go better than the 1st. The pair earned a 6th place ribbon. Catie's got a good plan for a few small changes to improve the the presentation.

It was really fun and we are looking forward to the GMHA Show at the beginning of October.

HITS Saugerties Dressage August I & II 2023 08/18 - 08/20/23

Obie is showing in the FEI Freestyle Test of Choice classes on Friday at 9:12 am in Ring 1 and Saturday at 10:35 am in Ring 1. (Our barn is not showing on Sunday.) This is the debut of Obie's Intermediare I Freestyle.

(Even though I am a photographer myself, I always support the show photographer by purchasing high resolution files. Terri does great work! Horse show photographers will disappear if not enough of us purchase images.)

Looking forward to Obie and Catie debuting a dressage freestyle (Intermediare I) at the HITS Dressage show in Saugerties August 18-20. (Obie will be showing on Fri the 18th and Sat the 19th-- both times will be the freestyle!)

GMHA is such a great resource in our area for so many segments of the horse world.

Obie and Catie were all set to show at the GMHA Dressage Days this coming weekend to debut his Intermediare I Freestyle. While I am sad that we'll have to wait until the August show at HITS Saugerties to debut the freestyle, I am sadder for the GMHA facility and community. (I've made a donation to GMHA to assist with the repairs and look forward to being able to return to GMHA grounds in the future!!)

Frozen semen doses from FCF Oberons Vanity available via 2 different Stallion Service Auctions. Both auctions close on Feb 14th. The ATA one does NOT have a second round for breedings that don't get a bid while the NEDA one does have a second round. Each auction is for 3 doses.

We tested a dose of frozen in 2011 and got a filly in 2012 with that single dose breeding.

Due to family obligations Obie will not be at public stud for 2023 so these auctions for some frozen semen doses are the only opportunity to purchase a breeding at this time.

The American Trakehner Association inspections are completed at the annual convention at the end of the year so the awards for a particular year are announced at the annual convention the FOLLOWING year. So at the end of 2022 we learned that FCF Oberons Vanity was the Reserve Champion Stallion of the 2021 ATA Inspection tour!

This lovely plaque arrived recently to commemorate that recognition!

We are so proud that Obie was the first Arabian stallion in over 15 years to be approved with the ATA; that he was also he second highest scoring stallion on that year's inspection tour is another honor!

Obie's 5 year old Anglo-Arabian gelding son, Sunny, was dressed as a mummy for the UVM Barn Halloween party. Sunny is serving as an educational horse for the UVM Equine Studies program this semester.

Clearly he is making friends and demonstrating the great temperament of his lineage!

One of our Arabian mares was presented at the Trakehner inspection at Tylord Farm yesterday. Since her 2022 filly by Obie, FCF Winged Valkyrie, is still nursing we opted to have her presented for a voluntary foal evaluation to get feedback and to let the ATA see an example of a foal by Obie. :-)

The mare scored well and was approved for Trakehner breeding. (Hurrah!!) The filly really impressed everyone and earned exceptional scores. Because foals are presented at various growth stages, they are only scored in 3 broad categories --Type, Conformation, and Quality of Movement. (Scores are on the same 10 point scale used in dressage/DSHB) Valkyrie earned a 9 for Type, 9.2 for conformation, and 8.9 for quality of movement. She also received comments from everyone on her boldness, intelligence, and sassy confidence.

(She is a KEEPER!!!!)

It was fun closing out the season at the beautiful GMHA show grounds at the peak of foliage.

2022 has been a development year for Obie. He is green at Intermediare II so has been gaining strength and confidence over the season. The excitement and distractions of the show environment add another level of challenge to the athletic demands of this high performance level so showing this summer has been directed at figuring out how to help Obie maintain focus and relaxation in the dressage ring so that he can gain the experience and confidence to perform the movements to the best of his ability in a complete test in a show environment. In recent weeks, the passage has finally started to develop in schooling and the one-tempis are more reliable. Those movements are still inconsistent in the show ring, but showing steady improvement. Obie has earned 6.5's to 7s in many of the I2 movements and the challenging movements have started to sometimes earn 5s so progress has been clear. With continued training over the winter he should be able to perform cleaner more consistent Intermediare II tests by the 2023 season with scores reflecting competence at the level. The next step will be further strengthening the movements to progress to the Grand Prix standard.

We are so grateful to Catie for taking such care to bring along Obie correctly and sympathetically so that he remains willing and happy in the work!

The step from I-1 to I-2 is a big one! It takes time to develop the strength to not only perform the individual movements, but to be able to put them all together in a test. Obie has made good progress over the summer. In May, he could do a few one tempis in schooling and was sometimes able to do all the 2-tempis in schooling. He can now reliably do the full set of 2-tempis in the tests and can school all 11 of the 1-tempis on many days. In his 2nd test at the show he made mistakes at the beginning but then did 9 ones in a row so that is getting closer. He has a very good piaffe, but is still working on the passage. He can do some real passage steps in schooling, but any tension in the test results in collected trot steps instead of passage.

He had a very good warm-up on Sunday, but then a cold rain started. A few of the other horses in the warm-up started to get naughty because they didn't like the rain. Obie continued working well, but a half-hour of riding in the cold rain made him a little tight in his back which impacted the test. The good things are that Catie has figured out how to tweak the riding in the test to keep Obie's focus better, he got his 2-tempis reliably and got the most 1-tempis that he has gotten in a test (mistake at the beginning and then 9 in a row). So the progress was good. I am grateful that Catie is the kind of trainer who is willing to develop the horse at their individual pace. That helps preserve soundness and ultimately supports the horse in becoming the best that they can be!

Obie has one more show Oct 8-9 at GMHA in South Woodstock, VT. We are hopeful that he will build on the last show and have even better tests!

Obie's 3 month old filly, FCF Winged Valkyrie, out of FCF As You Wish exploring the larger turnout field with her dam. Obie's paternal sister, FCF Titanias Vanity and her 2022 c**t by Aur Elijah had already settled in to the new field. They'll be in this field for a few months before joining the main herd.

Obie and his trainer/rider Catie at the Hits on the Hudson I &II show last weekend. Obie is still green at I2, but we were pleased with the clear progress since his last show in May. He showed some REAL passage steps in the warm-up. Passage is one of the movements that he is still developing so just getting some clear passage on the show grounds is promising. On both days, he got the full line of 2 tempis (earning a 7 on the second day!) and was able to do some of the one tempis so that is also significant progress. The judges comments were supportive and encouraging. He needs a bit more experience putting all the pieces together in the show ring so he'll be showing in late September (Saugerties, NY) and in October (GMHA).
