💔 What an incredible reminder. We love you, Drake!

When we set out on the adventure of bringing a new pup into our homes we often think about the fun, the excitement, the joy, and the companionship. I mean, what’s better than puppy breath?

We bring these dogs into our lives to serve as working dogs, support systems, hiking partners, hunting companions, or just as someone to share in the joy of life’s adventures.

What we never think about is when that chapter will come to a close. It just seems like it’s so far off in the distant future.

The last few weeks our family has been battling with just that — the closing of a chapter. While it’s never a good time, it was the right time for our black lab, Drake.

We wanted to take the time to share his story, as he served as a loyal companion to our family both in the duck blind and in the home.

Many people see us as just a brand selling a product, but for us it’s more than that. It’s about supporting the hard working and adventurous pups of this world and giving them comfort while here, serving us.

The hardest thing about serving a community like ours, is that we see through your posts how much you love them too.

🏞️ We see the backwoods adventures.
🌅 We see the early mornings in the duck blinds.
🐩 We see the countless hours of training.
🕣 We see the long days of hunting trials.
🛻 We see the tongue flailing out the truck window.
🐾 We see it all.

Sometimes social media only lets us see what we want to see. It’s been incredibly hard over the last few weeks battling through Drakes final days and trying to approve the team’s content to post for Ruff Shield. It felt like it was masking or detracting from what we were actually facing. The only thing that felt authentic to share was this post.

Drake shared his love and loyalty with us for 11 years, and we would love if you’d share this post as a way to share his story, and a reminder to this community that the time we have with our dogs is special.

Take ‘em on a walk, play fetch, hug them tightly, and love em hard.

[📖STORY TIME]

This picture sums up our origin in so many ways.

People often ask how Ruff Shield started, and it was truly built out of necessity.

Two years ago our founders brought home a new silver lab, Smoke. After noticing the odd (and uncomfortable) places he would sleep, they did what any loving dog owner would do: got him a brand new bed to sprawl out across — except there was one problem…

He wouldn’t sleep on it.

It was clear that the bed’s cheap shredded foam was the culprit, as it would quickly become lumpy and uncomfortable.

So, the search was on to find something more supportive, which eventually lead to purchasing another new bed.

Bed #2 was being tested, but the initial complaints about it bottoming out were quickly overshadowed...

After only a week, Smoke had turned the new bed into confetti! 😐 🎉

His wild antics of scratching, digging, and chewing, were no match for the thin exterior cover.

It was at this point where we asked “What if we built a bed that was rugged enough for Smoke’s antics, yet was designed as an extension of his personality, and supportive enough to grow with him as he aged.”

So we did just that. We built the dog bed we would want Smoke to have.

This extraordinary journey paved the way for Ruff Shield’s ultimate mission: to cater to the hardworking and adventurous dogs of the world and provide them with a bed as fierce as their spirit.
