URGENT: Today is the last day to cast your vote for the Carnaby's Black Cockatoo in Australia's favourite bird poll. Today is the most important day as the counting restarts at zero. All other rounds have knocked out the other birds. Please cast your vote even if you have voted in earlier rounds. The Carnaby is up against some tough completion with huge groups getting behind the popular swift parrot, the gang gang and the tawny frogmouth. They are all worthy recipients but our Carnaby's really need a hand. As a WA bird they don't have the national profile and they are heading for extinction. Let's help lift their profile. Let's make Carnaby's number 1. Vote link in the comments below.

Australia’s national environment law must urgently be fixed. It’s meant to protect our natural environment – and the people, communities, animals, and ecosystems which rely on it – from harm. But right now, it does not directly address the biggest threat our environment faces: climate change...

This is an extraordinary story.
Anyone who cares about the environment should be questioning how a State independent body (EPA) can be influenced by a former Premier with heavy backing from high emission companies.

Is this acceptable?
What other important environmental objective have been compromised?

Not saying they have BUT the questions have to be asked as to how much political/lobbyist influence has on the outcomes we see for our environment?

The ABC can reveal details of an "extraordinary" phone call by Mark McGowan to the state's independent environmental protection boss in which he claims the former premier pressured him to drop tough new emissions guidelines.

Dr. Sue Chapman's presentation to the Rally for Native Forests - Perth , an exceptional turnout today at Parliament House where hundreds of concerned environmental supporters came together to stand in solidarity for the cessation of logging our native forests and stronger protection for important habitats that continue to be destroyed by unsustainable mining and developments.
'We need leadership that puts our planet's health above all other things. The Actions all around Australia today are a wake up call, again, once more, yet again, Prime Minister Albanese and Minister for the Environment Tanya Plibersek - it's about time you bloody listened.
We are asking you to stop all logging... no ifs, no buts and no exceptions"

Join the call for a nationwide end to native forest logging! The Bob Brown Foundation is holding a series of rallies across the country - the Perth Forest Rally will be held at 11am, Parliament House on Sat 12th August. In WA we need to ensure our remaining forests are securely protected from mining by the creation of new national parks, and to protect endangered species like the black cockatoos from habitat destruction.

If you’re in the South West come along to the event by Save the Black Cockatoos and the Nannas for Native Forests - they will be creating a Giant Black Cockatoo from umbrellas to draw attention to the plight of these endangered birds and their role as umbrella species. Protecting their forest and woodland habitat has a flow-on effect for other threatened flora and fauna.

🌳 Giant Black Cockatoo: Bunbury, 10.30am on Friday the 11th August at the Marlston Lookout Tower. Please register - we need at least 50 people and organisers need to know numbers so they can plan the cockatoo formation https://www.facebook.com/events/1009534583422479

Today is National Tree Day.

In memory of all the trees destroyed for the Bunbury Outer Ring Road I’ve compiled a selection of images for trees that are no longer here. They lay as piles of mulch.
August the 1st will be the 1 year anniversary of the start of the destruction of the Gelorup Corridor.
This time last year we walked with Bob Brown through this Woodland.

How glorious they were.💚🌿

Help us out...let's all come together to form a giant Black Cockatoo.
The three species seen in the remains of the Gelorup Corridor - the Baudins, Carnaby and Forest Red Tail are all listed as endangered...
Help us all raise awareness of their plight as Forests and Woodlands - their roosting foraging and breeding habitats - are continuing to be destroyed.

Save the date! The N4NF are excited to invite everyone to join us at this special event in Goomburrup / Bunbury with Save the Black Cockatoos!

In action to protect WA's three threatened species of Black Cockatoos and highlight the need to save forest and woodland habitat we'll be using umbrellas to form a giant Black Cockatoo and capturing the shape of this fun community demonstration from above.

As part of the Bob Brown Foundation's 3 days of nationwide actions, and in the wake of local habitat destruction at Gelorup, we'll be sending a strong message to protect our forests across the country for wildlife and water, climate and communities.

So join us in calling for protection of our , precious woodlands, and critical habitat of threatened species:

PLEASE join us on World Environment Day June 5 at Kings Park Perth near the DNA Tower. We will be forming a giant black cockatoo using people power and umbrellas. The umbrellas signify that black cockatoos are an "umbrella species". If we protect their habitat we also protect many other endangered and threatened species. Join us for this symbolic and fun action.
We will have the tower to enable a great perspective and aerial view of the giant cockatoo.

URGENT APPEAL FOR GELORUP’S WILDLIFE.- PLEASE DONATE NOW- https://www.gofundme.com/manage/save-gelorup ; https://www.friendsofgelorup.com/take-action

Dear Friends and Supporters of Gelorup Corridor,

The Gelorup Corridor, with its community of wild and wonderful creatures, is being smashed by Main Roads’ bulldozers. But all is not yet lost!

Next week we are making a defiant legal appeal, against the destruction, to the full bench of the Federal Court in Perth.

After 25 years of defending the Gelorup Corridor woodlands, this appeal is for natural justice for the woodlands’ living ecosystem: possums, cockatoos, fish, frogs and orchids as well as ancient trees which have been growing safely there for hundreds of years.

Despite Main Roads’ outrageous and unnecessary destruction, we aim to achieve the literal implementation of the national Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 - to do what its name says! As such, our action has Australia-wide ramifications.

But resorting to the law requires funding. So here is a heartfelt appeal to give what you can to help us succeed. The appeal is urgent. Please give what you can.

With our gratitude,

Sue Chapman.

Ps. “I wholeheartedly support this appeal. It DOES have impact for ALL Australia’s threatened places.

The valour of the Friends of the Gelorup Corridor deserves our ardent backing. Please do what you can to help.”

Bob Brown.

Media release: Communities vs Rio Tinto

Community objections to Rio Tinto’s application to explore for lithium and other minerals in the Northern Jarrah Forests continue today in the Perth Mining Warden’s Court. Rio Tinto has applied for an exploration license covering over 100,000 hectares of native forest in the Northern Jarrah Forest region, between Perth and Collie.

WA Forest Alliance (WAFA) is one of nine groups representing environmental, public interest and scientific concerns which have formally objected to Rio Tinto’s applications, along with the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council and Shires of Waroona and Murray.

The matter is listed for a mention hearing in the Perth Mining Warden’s Court in the Central Law Courts today at 10am.

Comments attributed to Jess Beckerling, WAFA convener:

“The idea of Rio Tinto smashing down old-growth Jarrah forests, including spectacular forests right near Dwellingup and along the Nanga Brook is just outrageous – particularly with everything we know about climate change and the value of intact forests.

“This week, the Minister for Water announced a significant reduction in Alcoa’s water license in recognition of the 23 per cent drop in rainfall the region has suffered in recent decades.

“The last thing we need is a major new mining company in the region threatening local water supply.

“Climate change is having profound impacts on this incredibly diverse and precious part of the world and there can be no new mining in these forests.

“The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has identified the region as one of a handful of Australian ecosystems most at risk of climate collapse and recommends stopping clearing to reduce this risk.

“We cannot keep clearing forests and using up scarce water resources and expect regions to stay in good shape.

“Communities are objecting to this application because of the social, environmental, health, economic, cultural and wellbeing impacts Rio Tinto’s plans would have if they were to go ahead.

“It simply goes against the public interest and that’s why we’re seeing this scale of opposition from local communities.”

Did you know there are only 5000-8000 Western Ringtail Possums estimated to remain in the wild. Want to help their plight? Extensive research has shown that keeping your pet inside at night and planting possum friendly plants in your garden can make a big difference.
Come along to one of our night stalks next month and find out more from Biodiversity Program Manager Jacquie Nichol about these beautiful little critters and how you can help.

A NEW study to tell us what we already are aware of.

'Decisions by environment ministers spanning 15 years to either wave through projects or impose stricter conditions to protect threatened species made no actual difference to the amount of habitat destroyed, according to a new study.

More than half of habitat cleared to build infrastructure, mines, urban developments and for agriculture came after a minister had decided projects would have a “non-significant” impact on species and habitat, the study says.'

Environment ministers’ decisions spanning 15 years made no difference to amount of habitat destroyed, researchers say

We are heartbroken following the decision in the Federal Court today. This group has tirelessly fought against this infrastructure and it's location through a TEC woodland for the last 4 years, hoping that the preservation of our environment would be more important than a road that may save 10 minutes of time and will likely be obsolete within a decade.
We are grateful for the enormous support from our community and other environmental groups Australia wide who had hoped for a different outcome. Our sincere thanks go to our Legal Team whose skill and dedication supports the sanctity of our natural world and unique biodiversity. We will make further statements once our team has fully reviewed the judgement.
