Please help us find transport from Chicago International Airport (ORD) to St. Louis! We have Bokdol and Boknam, the last two siblings remaining from the 6 jindo mix puppies Mr. Tak rescued late last year. Stray Rescue, the biggest rescue center in St. Louis that helped find adopters for at least 10 of our dogs, has come on board again to find the 'Bok' brothers their forever families. ❤️

We need someone to transport the dogs from O'Hare airport to 2320 Pine St, St. Louis, MO. Please spread the word!

Itinerary:
Korean Air KE 37
June 27, 9:40AM arrival at ORD

The dogs are well-tamed and friendly and have been at their foster homes for the last few months. We will give thorough instructions on how to road-travel the Bok brothers and provide support as needed.
Please help spread the word!

Thank you always for your support :)

Our handsome boys Khan and Keanu landed safely in SF thanks to and our volunteer that made this all happen on site!

Keanu (the black sheepdog mix) is still looking for his forever home in SF. Since he is SO cute and amicable with all types of people and dogs, we are confident we will find someone but it still is heartbreaking that no one has stepped up for Keanu yet.

Keanu will do well with all homes especially would like fellow dog friends.

He had full dental cleaning (got one tooth taken out) and medical checkup done and even though he's been at the shelter since at least 2017, he is in great condition.

🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Please SF! Spread the word! Keanu is looking for a forever home! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Happy Lunar New Year from Korea! 🇰🇷🌕✨

Thank you so much all for your support so far!

We are delighted to announce that 3 more dogs will be traveling to SF to join for adoption opportunities in 2023!!

We are so relieved that Nabi and Duckie were not the last ones to leave the shelter.

Thank you to our friends and foster family network for their generous offer to fly with our dogs. ♥️

We have only a few adoptable dogs left at the shelter.
The majority of our dogs still at the shelter are over 60lb or too shy to get outside the shelter yet--extremely hard condition to find adopters in Korea.

A few remaining volunteers are working tirelessly to get as many dogs adopted while Mr. Tak is still able to hold the fort at the shelter.

Your support to our gofundme page helps us fund these flights, which costs $800 on average per dog.

Your support to our gofundme page helps us get Mr. Tak the necessary help at the shelter as he is in danger doing the heavy lifting all alone with his heart and stenosis condition. He is also 71 years old.

Your words of referral of our shelter to your friends and family help us find more adoption opportunities anywhere in the world.

We hope more good things happen at the shelter than otherwise 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

We are looking for a foster based in Gyeeonggi or Seoul area for Nabi and Duckie here.

Both dogs have been at a training facility (in Yeoju, Gyeonggi) for over a year now,
since, despite some progress, they have been too afraid to let their foster moms come near.

Both dogs have been traumatized at the shelter they are from KongKong Shelter.

Often threatened and bitten at the shelter by a mob of other dogs, Nabi and Duckie grew extremely anxious and suspicious.
They have spent over 6 months at regular foster homes respectively, but they could not get over the barrier of letting their foster families hold or pet them.

At the trainer’s, they have learned to walk on a leash and feel at ease being petted and held (as seen in the videos). The trainers have made sure the dogs understand the signal that they are safe to be touched and leashed.

We are looking for a foster that can continue this healthy communication.

An ideal foster home would be able to go to the trainer’s for initial trainings to make their transition from the facility to a home smoother. The rides to the trainer’s will be provided and I will help with translation, and the whole process necessary until their adoption.

An ideal foster home would be interested in dog training in general.

We are working with rescue organizations in Canada for their adoption opportunities.

Please help us continue the miracle we were able to see with these two poor dogs.

Our shelter cannot afford to pay for their trainings for another year but we will keep trying everything we can to make sure Nabi and Duckie will end up back at the shelter.

If we end up not being able to afford their training and there are no options for us to continue their training somehow, we have nowhere else to send them.
Please help us out. We are at the end of our wits.

Direct all inquires to [email protected] or FB Messenger
Thank you so much!

MEET SALLY!

IG: https://www.instagram.com/sally_kongkongshelter/
Please watch this video for her full story:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btbjhRG4yIE&t=6s
SALLY
Age: Appx 5 years old
Breed: Sapsali mix
Gender: Spayed female
Weight: 7kg, 15 lb
Paralyzed waist down, fully continent, needs potty assistance, good on wheelchair
SALLY broke her spine from a fall a day before her flight for adoption opportunities. She regained a lot of her senses since she has worked so hard on her physical therapy as soon as she got discharged since Oct 3rd. She would benefit from an adopter who can continue giving her physical rehabilitation, as she is showing great prognosis (watch her video to see her transformation!)
SALLY gets along with all types of people and dogs, except she loves to chase after cats. She nudges her head for more head scratches to any stranger that are gentle to her. When she cuddles, she feels awkward at first but always immediately melts into your arms. Considering what she has gone through, she is miraculously positive, curious, and kind. She teaches those around her endless hope for life.
We hope this miracle of a dog finds her forever family!
That, truly will be a miracle for her.

*** I have plans to travel to Seattle for a wedding on May 29, so I hope to find her an adopter whom I can personally bring her to by then. Likely due to her disability, it has been difficult to get her any adoption inquiries. Please share to help create a miracle for Sally!

In my care, she has to stay at home alone for more than 8 hours a day. We believe there's a family out there where someone is always home, physically active, loving, and sees beyond her disability. She's just too cute.!!

Moon (Dougie, Doku) is seriously so cute...😍😍🔥

He loves to go on walks (still a bit scared by loud noises)
He loves to be petted (can't get enough)

Name: Moon
Age: appx. 3 years old
Breed: Sapsali mix
Gender: Male, neutered
Weight: 11kg, 24lb
Vaccinations: Fully vaccinated
Sociability: careful but affectionate
Cats? Probably would be scared of cats
Children? He is gentle around children
Housebroken? Yes!

✔️ Cautious and shy at first. Can take her time to open up to people, but with a bit of patience and space and lots of treats offered to her, she closes her distance and comes to lick your hand.

She’s now 100% in good communication with her foster home--knowing when to go on walks and comfortable with their touches.

✔️ On Walks: Having spent all her life at the shelter, Lucy was scared on walks at first. She loves going on walks now and is a great companion. She can freeze up when people pass by or if she hears a loud car or motorbike passing by, but she soon resumes walking if you stand beside her and wait for her to calm down.

✔️ Potty trained?: She knows to p*e and go potty on indoor p*e pads. She shows signs that she prefers to go potty outdoors, and as a jindo, will eventually learn to exclusively go potty outdoors.

✔️ Reaction to other dogs: She expresses affinity to the types of dogs she feels comfortable around, and hides away from those dogs she feels scared of.

She definitely feels way more confident and at ease when other dogs are around. She has shown anxiety when left at a home with no other dogs that was all empty during the day.

But as soon as she resettled in a home with other dogs around, her anxious behavior disappeared. She is also super calm when left in the kennel as well--kind of crate-trained herself!

She welcomes her foster family home and loves to go on walks now. She deserves a patient and loving home with other dog siblings and she will be the most gentle and loyal companion!

Moon is currently looking for a forever family in foster in Vancouver! ♥️😍

He is such a catch! Please read below for his profile and message us for any inquiries!

Sociability: He is shy with strangers approaching him but he loves being pet so much sometimes he will allow it if done in a calm manner.

Sociability with children: At first he was startled by children from their loud noise and running. But week 2 he would stay still when children tried to pet him.

Sociability with other dogs: He does not mind aggressive or overly jealous dogs. He would show a bit of curiosity by sniffing the dog a bit but did not show more interest. However, he needed to be separated from other dogs during meal time, just in case. For treats, he would get in line along with the other dog to get attention and get the treats, even gesturing with his paws to get more treats.

He shows more stability and calm when he is left alone in an empty house with another dog.

He seems to learn more confidence from other dogs--he got more comfortable with brushing when he saw other dogs getting brushed.

Now at his Vancouver foster, he was initially scared with his harness and putting the leash on. It was initially hard to get them on at first but he is now very happy to have theme put on. But he is super happy once you leave the front door. He seems to prance as he walks!

Able to be cuddled? Not yet. But he loves being pet on the head. If the house dog is being pet, he will come over and nudge for pets too.

He would follow his foster mom around after a while, and for some reason, insisted on lying down and sitting right behind her. He tends to bond with a person 1:1.

He loves getting the attention and petting. When he can sense that he is about to be petted, he would lie on his stomach and open his legs. After too much petting though, he sometimes gets up to move his spot.

Important note:
He is very very sensitive to sudden loud noises and harsh tones. He gets spooked and surprised easily. Even if the other dog is being lightly scolded nearby, he will get scared and retreat. I think he stopped using p*e pads inside because I used too surprising of a happy tone! He absolutely must be positive reinforcement trained.

🍀 We really hope Moon is with a forever family by Spring!
He came a long way from coming back to the shelter in matted hair, barking and totally afraid of people, heartworm positive, and now loving and loyal to her foster family and learning confidence everyday! 🙂

Moon is looking for a forever family in Vancouver ♥️🇨🇦

✔️ He is a cuddle bug. He gets jealous of other dogs being pet!

✔️ He very dramatically groans/sighs when he gets comfortable/lies down or waiting for the foster mom to get ready for our walk—it’s so cute considering that he’d been so fearful of his harness and leash before.

✔️ Homes with other dogs would be great or even preferred—he loves the company of other dogs.

✔️ He is genuinely a good boy and has adapted to home life very quickly!

✔️ Good with kids as well!

✔️ He loves going for walks.

✔️ He is a quick learner and food motivated.

✔️ He is very chill when he's at home (snoozes)—low energy, but he howls for a bit when he’s left completely alone—like he has separation anxiety.

✔️ His fosters are working on his leash manners (when he’s not sure, he stops or pulls on his leash) & his barking (he barks when the nearby door in the hallway opens and closes) 🙏🏻

This cute donkey boy deserves a forever home!!

We are looking for understanding and loving family as Moon is still gaining his full confidence.

Introducing Moon! (Doku) 🇨🇦
He’s Dorothy and Bear’s brother ♥️

He is currently in foster in Vancouver—looking for his forever family!

✔️ Potty trained? It was hard to get him to use p*e pads properly (he would step on the pads, or p*e on the margins), but now that he’s going on walks, he is getting much better.

✔️ House broken? Yes but may make mistakes when settling in.

✔️ On walks? He’s just learning to go on walks since he wasn’t able to go on walks when being treated for heartworm disease, so he’s still working on being 100% confident.

✔️ With children? Was gentle with a 3 and 5 year old back at his foster in Korea.

✔️ With other dogs? He gets along with all dogs, but doesn’t like sharing food or tolerate aggressive, territorial dogs. (Makes low growl)

✔️With cats? Hard to tell.

Back at the shelter, Moon desperately ran away from people. Timidity definitely was shared across the siblings 😅

When we finally found a foster for him, he quickly came around. He would follow his foster mom around after a while, and for some reason, insisted on lying down and sitting right behind her. He tends to bond with a person 1:1. He would even look for her and make a bedding on her clothes when she went out.

He is very very sensitive to sudden loud noises and harsh tones. He gets spooked and surprised easily.
He absolutely must be positive reinforcement trained.

He first gets scared of the leash and harness but is learning to love going on walks 😍

He's working tirelessly with the help of his loving foster family to meet his forever family! ♥️

Dorothy 🇨🇦
Currently available for adoption in Vancouver!

✔️ Potty trained? Yes, but for some reason she takes No. 2’s only in the backyard, never on walks 🤔
✔️ House broken? Yes, but at first she made mistakes on the rug. She adjusted to p*e pads and then only p*eing outdoors.
✔️ On walks? She loves going on walks but gets startled by loud noises, crowd of people, or sudden moves. When she panics, all she needs is a bit of time to pause, sit and wait till she calms doen.
✔️ With children? She prefers children than adults 😂 very gentle and understanding.
✔️ With other dogs? She doesn’t like hyperenergetic dogs but gets along well.
✔️With cats? She wasn’t reactive to cats when she lived with one in Korea.

Dorothy used to be extremely scared of all things, scared enough to spit out her treat and run at the sight of people nearby. However, having gone through foster homes, she now takes treats from people’s hands and enjoys going on walks! She accepts touches from strangers.

Dorothy had to wait all her life for a chance to live at a home, and due to her size and timidity, she had to wait more than 2 years at the same cage she shared with her 4 siblings back at the shelter.

🐶 Lucy is currently in Vancouver available for adoption!

🌸 Spayed female, 28lb

Cautious and shy at first. Can take her time to open up to people, but with a bit of patience and space and lots of treats offered to her, she closes her distance and comes to lick your hand.

Lucy arrived in Vancouver on Sept 7--she’s now 100% in good communication with her foster home--knowing when to go on walks and comfortable with their touches.

Lucy was born at the shelter when the shelter was poorly managed after relocating to a far-off countryside. As a relatively smaller and unspayed female, she would get attacked by other dogs.

All her p*ers have found forever families, but it took her a couple of years longer to finally get out of the shelter. For most Korean people, she might come off as too scary-looking and too big. She may seem shy but there’s so much intelligence and gentleness in her soul.

Lucy was born at the shelter by a pregnant stray dog that came into our shelter.

Being an unspayed female, she's been bitten and attacked at the shelter, which made her grow timid and cautious (she's since been spayed).

Due to her size (28lb) and looks, perhaps, Lucy did not get any foster inquiries for several years.

She finally got her chance to get out of the shelter, but unfortunately had to hop around 3 foster homes (including this one in Vancouver), still looking for her forever family.

In every new home, though, she's shown gentleness and vulnerable curiosity toward people. She's good with other dogs & although she's so new to this, really good on walks--just need to give her confidence when she stops and freezes from loud noises & crowd of oncoming people.

💌 Important Notes 💌
✔️ Lucy will be best at homes with other dogs,
and with family members experienced with rescue dogs (timidity & sociability).

✔️ She gets anxious when she's left alone without another dog. If she's with other dogs, she okay but when she is all alone, she misbehaves in anxiety, like chewing off cable cords, chewing on things in general. 😅

In cases she needs to be left alone, she stays perfectly calm in her crate/kennel.

✔️ She's been treated for ear infection and it's best if her ears are routinely checked and maintained.

✔️ She is scared of strangers (more scared of males)--may have nervous barking (which stops once she's warned) and may even p**p a bit.

It is so much struggle to find our dogs across the globe, but the most rewarding moment definitely is seeing our dogs in the grand nature, on a trip with their families 🎁 ♥️🌲

We are constantly looking for flights to to find our dogs these stunning opportunities to change their lives.

The flights to Canada are the hardest to come by 😢 please, if you know anyone traveling from Korea to Vancouver and Toronto, please connect them to us! 🙏🏻

Hello and happy Korean Independence Day (soon)!

We really appreciate everyone that asked about Mr. Tak since our last update. He is still out of breath most of the time and can’t do any physically demanding work, but he has been taking his medication, after which he will be screened again to see if he needs procedures or surgeries. He’s dealing with small floating blockages in his arteries, which can cause heart attack or stroke, so he is making sure he follows doctor’s orders.

So we had to hire someone to work at the shelter, which has been a huge help. The shelter is cleaner than ever :) But now at the end of every month, we are having to pay $2,000 for wages. We are skimping down on spaying our female dogs for now and volunteers are personally backing vet bills and expenses before we are sure we can pay this month’s wages.

Everything you do is allowing us to breathe better. Just this week, we had 4 dogs travel to the U.S. to find forever homes. We could not have done this without your support, since each flight costs a minimum of $350.

We have flights lined up for 4 more dogs in September and we’ve been placing our dogs at foster homes nonstop, which is not easy but crucial to get our dogs to “adoptable.”

Now we have less than 100 dogs left at the shelter--It’s a huge progress since our most desperate times in 2019, when we were struggling with 160 dogs plus puppies.

We are mentally drained from so much work, but each and every person doing their bit to help us out is giving us hope.

Please remember the dogs in the pictures! We hope to be giving updates that all of them have found their forever homes ♥️

Sincerely,
KongKong Shelter

We are looking for a foster for this boy in area!

We have a flight booked for Mongsil on July 9th, but our affiliate rescue has run out of foster homes to take in new arrivals from Korea. So we are looking for savvy new fosters!!

Mongsil was rescued as a puppy from an illegal dog meat butcher in Yong In in 2018. He was soon after adopted by Mr. Tak (our shelter's founder and keeper) acquaintance but later down the way we found out that both Mongsil and his sibling were kept in horrible state (explains his skinny body). Ever since being back at the shelter, he's been kept separate from other dogs for his safety and has had puppies and other outside-rescue dogs as roommates, and he's been very gentle and considerate around them.

He can be shy to strangers (he tries to keep distance from strangers) so we are getting him leash-trained and more confident around loud noises and crowd of people coming by.

He is currently being fostered in Korea.

Please message us to get a full profile on Mongsil, and please spread the word!

Questions to your possible answers:
- Do I have to go to the airport?
> The founder of our affiliate rescue can pick Mongsil up and drive him to your residence. If your schedule allows, it's best if you meet Mongsil at the airport and take him home yourself. Melody will be at the airport to help with the process regardless.

- What to know about fostering dogs from Korea?
> They haven't been outside the shelter much so they need to learn everything from scratch. They can be scared around loud noises and hectic traffic. They need to be potty-trained. You will need to take heed to Melody's safety precautions (on double-leashing the dog, taking the dog outside after you've fully built trust, and on a less busy time of the day, etc). They all come full vaccinated and checked up by our vet here in Korea up till their departure. I (representative of KongKong Shelter) will be in touch to make sure you know everything there is to know about Mongsil.

- How long would the fostership be?
> It's best if the dogs can be fostered till they find their forever home, which can take up to 6 months or more. Both the rescue's representative and I will be in touch to keep track of Mongsil's progress and post his profile on the rescue's website when he's deemed ready. Most of our dogs were adopted within 3 months of being fostered. If you can only foster for a certain period of time, we can still get her started at your home and find a different foster in the meantime.

- Any previous experience required?
> It would be helpful if you have fostered a dog, but if you have general experience with dogs or rescue dogs, you will be able to operate things with some guidance from both me and the rescue. Communication is key! If you have any questions or concerns going forward with fostering, we are here to help and find any ways we can to help.

- What's the next step?
> To make sure you are fully on board, you may have to fill out a foster application form to have on our record

Our Story

Kongkong is a small rescue dog shelter located in the countryside of Korea. It's run by a helpless elderly man in his 60s with the amazing support of volunteers from all over the country. There's still a lot of stigma around adopting abandoned dogs in South Korea. They're often considered less worthy of a loving home. We hope to find a forever home for our 200 dogs via international adoption. If you're an adoption shelter or a volunteer located in the U.S. please send us a message!
