Don't under estimate the value in hiring a good dog trainer.
Years of training courses, books, webinars and mentorship programs and the support of a wider membership organization are some of the attributes to look for.
Getting the wrong advice can make things so much worse for your dog.

Not a good time of year for children and dogs. Councils spray herbicides around parks and roads at this time of year. By the time the grass is dead, the chemical is likely dried and much less damaging. But it is highly toxic just after they spray and until it is dry.
Unfortunately without adequate signage to warn users of parks and verges, the public has no way of knowing it has been sprayed.

Thinking of putting some old slug pellets down? Check the ingredients first. Metaldehyde, a type of slug pellet, is dangerous to dogs and now illegal to use in the UK.

Hello Everyone - clients old and new,

Due to family commitments, I have decided to limit my training offerings to just my 6-week one-to-one puppy course and dog walking.

I am now offering mostly dog walking services in Welland and surrounding areas.
Solo dogs are most welcome, as are dogs who enjoy small groups.

Thank you for being amazing and allowing me to share you and your dog's training journeys with me. It's been a pleasure!

It's worth doing any kind of training with your dog... If you both enjoy it.

Your dog's nose is their super power! They love using it. I incorporate a little scent work, one way or another, into most of my training plans.

Play find the treat or toy with your dog this weekend. 😁

Dogs trained in scent work have improved mental ability and capacity to carry out certain tasks, new research reveals.

Helping our dogs is not always about the training, often we need to take a step back and find was to allow them to just be dogs, safely. There’s so many expectations & pressure put on both caregiver & dogs. It’s ok to have a break and just each others company 💕

The 6th and final group class tonight and they nailed it!
The dogs can now indicate the odor of clove oil in both passive and active searches. They can loose lead walk with their owners through a course of toy dogs, distracting food, toys and sit through navigating doors with their human.
They can stay on their mat and perform an emergency sit.
Tonight's search required the dogs to look through "airport" luggage where Santa had lost his toy squirrels.
The dogs found them all and they loved their job!
Well done everyone!

Group class humans and dogs did an amazing job tonight! We have built on scent detection, both passive and active, mat work with release cue, hand touch with duration using a "keep going signal" and emergency sit.
The dogs absolutely loved the work they did and their humans helped them to achieve it by setting the dogs up to succeed. Starting with easy wins and building on criteria one layer at a time. Well done!

All set up tonight for class 3. Loose lead walking with turns, sits and distractions.
Fortunately it's quiet here at the hall but the the fireworks were loud at home.
I look forward to a day in the future when people care and consider others enough to no longer use fireworks.

Hello friends,
I am putting a pause on taking on any new clients at the moment.
If you are in need of a dog trainer I recommend using the ABTC register to search for a dog trainer in your local area.
I hope to be able to offer more services and availability again in the future.
Keep up with your training no matter how small your improvements.

XL BULLY BAN: WHAT WE CURRENTLY KNOW

On 10th September 2023 the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, posted on her Twitter page:-

“The American XL Bully is a clear and lethal danger to our communities, particularly children. We can’t go on like this. I have commissioned urgent advice on banning them”

This was followed on 15th September 2023 by the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, who said he would ban the breed under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 “by the end of the year”. DEFRA subsequently issued a statement that evening saying that the Environment Secretary will:-

1. Convene experts to define the American XL Bully ‘in the next week’
2. The Government will then lay a Statutory Instrument to ‘add it to the list of dogs banned under the Act. This will make it an offence to own, breed, gift or sell an XL Bully’ by the end of the year

DEFRA went on to say that there will be a transition period requiring owners to ‘come forward’ and that details of this will be provided ‘in due course’.

The UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Christine Middlemiss, is quoted on the BBC as saying on 16th September 2023 that the transition (which she called an “amnesty”) will require owners to register their dogs and take action including requiring the dog to be neutered, on a lead and muzzled in public, as well a requirement for the dog to be insured.

It's hard to be too precise about the next steps but the following is our ‘best guess’, pending further Government announcements:-

Q) Do owners of XL Bullies have to do anything now?
A) No, but it would be advisable to get your dog used to wearing a muzzle, as well as to get it trained, neutered, and insured.
N.B. When your dog is neutered, please ask the vet to make a record of your dog’s microchip number. For insurance it is likely to be third-party liability insurance required, not healthcare.

Q) How do I know if my dog is going to be on the banned list?
A) We shall have to wait to see the definition that is adopted.

Q) How can I get my dog exempted?
A) We’re not sure yet, but it seems as though it’ll be by an owner-led registration scheme which will probably require you to complete an application form, provide evidence of compliance with the conditions and pay for the details to be on the Index of Exempted Dogs.

Q) What if someone misses the deadline to have the dog exempted?
A) The owner (+ if different the person in charge of the dog) will be committing an offence punishable by a prison sentence of up to 6 months and/or an unlimited fine. The dog will be seized by the Police and there is likely to be a presumption that it shall be put down unless you can prove that it is not a danger to public safety. You may also be required to prove that there was good reason why you failed to comply with the amnesty.

Q) What will be the conditions.
A) If it follows the current position for an exempted dog, the requirements will be:-

• The dog is neutered
• The dog is microchipped
• Third party insurance is obtained (+ continues to be in force)
• A certificate of exemption is issued
• Keep the dog at the same address as the registered keeper except for up to 30 days in 12 months
• Notify the Agency of any change of address
• Notify the Agency of the death or export of the dog
• Keep the dog muzzled and on a lead when in a public place
• Keep the dog in sufficiently secure conditions to prevent its escape

Breach of any of these conditions will mean that the dog is no longer exempted.

Q) What are the offences likely to be?
A)
• Having possession or custody of the dog if it has not been exempted within the amnesty period
• To breed (or breed from) the dog
• To sell or exchange the dog
• To make or offer to make a gift of the dog
• Allow the dog to be in a public place without being muzzled and kept on a lead
• Abandon the dog or allow it to stray

Q) Will a rescue be able to rehome an XL Bully?
A) When the ban comes into force, unless the existing rules are changed, a rescue won’t be able to rehome an XL Bully unless it is going to someone who already has or has had responsibility for the dog, and in any event this would have to be approved by a Court.

This summary was produced on 16th September 2023 but this is a fast changing situation so you must not rely on it as legal advice.

This autumn dog training class is now fully booked.
I have a waiting list for spring classes or can offer one to one dog training courses instead.

It's good to remember that dog training classes are not a chance for dogs to learn how to play with other dogs. It's an opportunity for them to learn to ignore other dogs, focus on you and for you to develop your bond with your dog and have some fun. Awesome skills, tricks and behavior will also result from attending classes or training courses. 😁🐕

Horses, dogs, cats, humans, all need help in the heat.
You can play find the toy or treat games indoors on a cool floor.
Practice some of your other moves such as sit/down/stand or touch.
Teach a new trick such as a spin or twist.
Put the fan on and enjoy a different kind of day indoors.
If you need to go out, aim for the forest with a dipping area and keep your dog on lead because they won't know when to stop.
Our dogs, like us, are not used too this weather, so take it easy.

It’s ok to not walk your dogs, let them rest and stay cool 💕
