RESCUEDOhio found my letter to Santa!!!

Wow. Our profile picture and now the cover of a magazine. Waylon sure is crushing it this year. And that includes his amazing weight loss transformation! There’s just one area where he still hasn’t achieved his dreams. We managed to get an exclusive copy of Waylon’s letter to Santa:

Dear Santa,

I know you must be super busy what with 2020 being harder than trying to get skates on a mule and all, but I was wondering if I could put in my Christmas wish for a family to call my own?
I’ve been a very good boy.

Okay, I might have scared a cat or two but how’s a guy supposed to tell the difference when all the little critters just look like a ball wrapped in fur...fur balls need chasing, too. And there was that one time I pulled my foster mom’s sofa into the middle of the room but, look, I HAD TO SAVE MY BALL.
I've been a very good boy.

My foster mom thinks I'm a handsome catch. All I want is to be somebody’s best friend. The people here at the boarding place are very nice and I like all the volunteers that come and play with me and take me for walks. But still, when I see all the other dogs find their family, it makes me kind of sad. So please, Santa, I have been waiting for such a long time.
I'm a very good boy.

Please send me my family; one that’s looking to give all of their love to one dog, just like I want to give them all of mine. I'd love a buddy to go on long walks with or to go on hiking trips. If they play fetch, I'm their guy!

When the folks are just chilling at home, I'm content to play with my stuffies by their side.
I'm a very good boy.

I would love my people and would be a blast for a family who would love me and my hound ways.
I'd like to make them laugh and I could teach them the "barroo" of my people.

The good folks here could show my family how to adopt me and you could bring me a squeaky toy or ball!

Hello! Are you looking for a best friend who will play with you and keep you company on hikes and other outdoor activities? My name is Waylon and I am looking for my best friend too. Like a best friend who likes to play fetch. I really like to play fetch. And toys. Squeaky toys are the best. Do you have toys? I really like toys. Did you know you can play fetch with them too? I’m a five year old country boy that likes to do hound things. My foster mom says I’m too smart for my britches but that’s silly because I don’t have any britches. I like to keep busy so I could use a home that understands my hound ways. I’m a talker too and though my foster mom says hound people like talkers, maybe your neighbors won’t so probably a country home would be best for me. I like to take off after critter so I’m not looking to live with cats. Actually, what I really want to be is your only dog so I can shower all my attention on you; I promise to be your best friend. I am taking thyroid medicine, which I will have to take for the rest of my life. I’m an indoor dog and have good house manners but I can get carried away and jump around when I see a toy so I may be too much for small kids. I got a hound’s heart of gold and would love to be your best friend and play fetch. I'll even teach you like I taught my foster mom. Did I mention I like to play fetch? One of the rescue volunteers, Shannon, has been taking Waylon on frequent walks. Today, she posted this memento of her adventures with Waylon on our volunteer page. Enjoy!!!!
It’s been fun getting to know Waylon on our walks. “The neighbors seem generally amused by his singing voice 😂 (I love the piggly noises he makes when he’s sucking in a particularly good smell) The other day a lady came out on her porch and exclaimed “I thought someone was callin for help!” And then she laughed. Today we decided to walk north instead of south and found a lovely woodsy path by a creek.
Our neighborly interaction today:
“You tracking an escaped convict or something?”
“Ha, I think HE’D like to think so”
“Well he sure has the voice for it! What’s his name?”
“Waylon”
“HA! That’s peeeeerfect!”
“Yep, ol’ wailin’ Waylon”

Even though I know foster mom has 4000 fetch balls she is hoarding, I will humor her and go find one of my balls somewhere in the yard so we can get the fetch games going...

So even though I'm not supposed to play with balls in the house because my foster mom says no piece of furniture gets between me and my ball like it's a bad thing, I snuck a ball into my room. But on my way outside to play with it, it hurled itself out of my mouth underneath all those water bottles to the left of the couch. Well, naturally I had to rescue that ball and I could sniff plain as day that it was b/w the crate and some storage unit behind that couch clear on the other side. My foster mom did not believe me; she thought I was after the toys on top of the crate (okay I was after those too but first I had to get my ball). She kept sticking a broom under the sofa trying to reach the ball but I kept trying to tell her she was looking in the wrong spot. She even got on her knees and boy she was NOT happy about that--kept asking me if I could hear her knees cracking--but it's not my fault she did not believe me when I said it was in that corner. Of course, she could not spot it under the couch because that's not where it was. And I tried to tell her FOR FORTY FIVE MINUTES even though she tries to tell me dude there's no ball back there. Finally she acts like she's got some sense and pulls out the sofa and sure enough the ball was where I told her it was. A hound dog never leaves his ball behind.

Waylon's foster mom here: just look how far this boy has come! The first picture was taken on Waylon's freedom ride when RESCUEDOhio pulled him from a shelter where he had been for six months. Overweight and lethargic, at first, we thought Waylon was just a no-nonsense crabby Wilford Brimley kind of guy. It turns out he was just demoralized and not feeling well because of untreated hypothyroidism. We always thought he was a handsome character full of personality, and his photos quickly went viral with memes created by RO volunteers (I mean, that face). But just look at our playful, social, sweet, studly boy now!! Thanks to good nutrition, exercise and enrichment, and medication for his thyroid, Mr. Handsome has gone from 90 to 75 pounds!! And we are all enjoying getting to know Waylon all over again as he gets a new leash on life 😜 and waits for his people to find him. Waylon is dog friendly but has a strong prey drive so little dogs and cats would not be a good fit. If you. think you might be his family, you can apply to adopt through the RESCUEDOhio website.

Foster mom took me away from my toys for five whole minutes because she said she needed a photo where I show off my hound ears in all of their glory. City folks get excited over the strangest things. Nobody’s taking pictures of your ears, Barbara.

My first foster mom who took such good care of me missed me so much, she came to visit and take me for a walk. I did her a solid and stopped every once in a while so she could pet me because I love her so much.
