Coalition Condemns Gene-Edited Pets as Irresponsible and Unethical

Sacramento, Calif., March 31, 2025 – Assemblymember Bill Essayli introduced AB 1382, the Ethics Over Aesthetics Act, which is sponsored by political animal advocacy group, Social Compassion in Legislation. The bill will prohibit the sale of animals that have been genetically engineered for cosmetic purposes.

"While an advocate for ethical biotechnology and animal welfare, I strongly condemn the gene-edited pets, as highlighted in Wired’s recent article, Your Next Pet Could Be a Glowing Rabbit. The push to commercialize genetically modified animals for novelty and aesthetic appeal is both scientifically irresponsible and ethically unsound," said Assemblymember Bill Essayli.

The article details a project leveraging CRISPR gene-editing technology to create genetically altered pets, including bioluminescent rabbits (glowing green or blue). While the potential of CRISPR in medicine and conservation is immense, its application in creating designer pets raises significant concerns regarding animal welfare, ecological impact, and the commodification of living beings.

“Gene editing should be reserved for advancing medical research and addressing critical ecological challenges, not for turning animals into living accessories,” said Judie Mancuso, founder and president of Social Compassion in Legislation (SCIL). “This reckless commercialization trivializes the ethical implications of genetic modification and exposes animals to unknown health risks.”

“Beyond the potential for unintended genetic consequences, introducing gene-edited pets into the mainstream market could have severe repercussions, including disruptions to ecosystems if these animals were to escape or be released. Additionally, it paves the way for exploitative breeding practices, where profit-driven motives outweigh the well-being of the animals involved. Our shelters are already overflowing with overbred dogs, cats and rabbits. This whole idea is obscene in so many ways.”

Jennifer Lee, Executive Director of the San Diego House Rabbit Society, Inc, was aghast when she read the article, “As someone who runs a shelter that is devoted to the care of domestic rabbits, I’m deeply concerned about the rise of genetically modified animals for novelty. Not only could such modifications harm their health and well-being, but this trend also distracts from the pressing issue of overpopulation in shelters. Instead of creating new 'designer' pets, we should be focused on saving the lives of the countless rabbits already in need of care and homes."

“California’s animal shelters are chock full of beautiful, adoptable pets ready for loving homes,” said Jill Tucker, CEO of CalAnimals. “We are immensely concerned about efforts involving the genetic engineering of pets to support commercial interests and/or fashion trends. If you want a great pet, please visit your local shelter. If you think you need a pet that ‘glows’, please consider an alternate fashion accessory rather than exploiting a sentient being.”

The coalition urges policymakers to support AB 1382 and prohibit the sale of these pets with genetic modifications, and calls on the scientific community to prioritize ethical considerations over commercial interests. Consumers are also encouraged to think critically about the long-term implications of supporting such trends.

Update on Hazel from Contra Costa Animal Services
She went into a foster-to-adopt home immediately after her rescue and spay and, now almost 4 weeks later, we think she might have found a sweet husbun named Bean. These two share their love for food and spend most of the day eating massive amounts of hay. Bean begs for attention all day long and Hazel is a little stingy with her love, but he seems perfectly happy just shoving his head under her body or getting his pet needs met by any human friend. Hazel is a little shy at first, but is learning to trust quickly especially since Bean is the complete opposite and one of the most friendly and outgoing bunnies I have met. They are spending a few more days at the Napa Bunnies HQ while mom is deep cleaning the house in anticipation for their arrival home!

***Looking for a monthly sponsor at $25 or $50 (for both)***

Our long term residents Jasper and Pearl recently moved into their retirement home. At almost 6 years and very shy, these two just wanted a place where they can be with each other and have human contact on their own terms. So we were delighted when our volunteer Sara offered to give them their very own quiet room at her grandmother's place. Sara checks in on her recently widowed grandmother twice a day, and we are both located a short 5 minute drive away. Jasper and Pearl are a delight to just watch interact with each other as they are such a sweet bonded pair, so her grandmother has some company and endless entertainment. I can't think of a better win-win situation!

Napa Bunnies is looking for one or two monthly sponsors for Jasper and Pearl to cover their ongoing food, enrichment and veterinary expenses.
Please send an email to [email protected] if you are interested in helping out financially. One time donations of any amount are also appreciated: Venmo preferred https://venmo.com/u/Napa_Bunnies or Zelle [email protected]

We pulled David and Hazel from Contra Costa Animal Services. David went to his foster home last night. He will be neutered on March 12th. Hazel went straight from the shelter to her spay appointment this morning as she is 99% pregnant and we do not need more rabbits. She is still in need of a foster home!
It will cost us about $500 to neuter David, spay Hazel and vaccinate and microchip both. If anyone would like to send a few dollars our way that would be much appreciated.
Venmo preferred: https://venmo.com/u/Napa_Bunnies or if you don't have Venmo we set up a fundraiser through Square: https://square.link/u/Wicv3T9Q
Thank you!

I have also word that the last two girls are safe and are also being spayed this morning.

***UPDATE*** He is safe with me at home waiting on his foster to pick him up.

David Hasselhop has only one week left before Contra Costa Animal Services will kill him. He is just one year old and by no fault of his own he ended up at a high kill shelter barely longer than a week ago. We need a serious foster commitment so we can pull him. David Hasselhop is currently unaltered and unvaccinated and would need to be kept separate from other rabbits in your home.

Looking for a single bunny? Squash or Persimmon might be right for you as they seem to prefer human companionship over a rabbit friend.
Squash is a super chill 2 year old lionlop boy who is extremely tidy and will follow you around after he is done napping. Persimmon is a very curious and active 1 year old harlequin lionhead mix girl. She melts away when you start scratching her head. Interested? Complete our adoption application today: https://new.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/BUN/Rabbit
All our rabbits are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated against RHDV2, and we do not charge any adoption fees.
Not ready to adopt? We are always looking for indoor foster homes. We provide all the supplies and no prior experience is required.

***UPDATE***Jack The Hopper was adopted and Cindy Hopper may have been tagged by another rescue but she is still at the shelter. If she gets pulled, that leaves 4 rabbits that need out in the next week!

These are the remaining 6 rabbits at the Contra Costa Animal Services in Martinez, CA who need to be saved! They are available for adoption and the shelter will spay/neuter them for you. Napa Bunnies is a small foster-based rescue and we will need fosters till adoption (indoor homes only!) in order to help as we are already at capacity.
Here is a link to the shelter page: https://www.contracosta.ca.gov/7889/Transfer-Preferred-Other-Animals Apparently the shelter moves them to transfer preferred once they mark them to die!
I was told they are all very sweet bunnies and only 1 year old. They were just surrendered on 02/15/2025 and despite the shelter having 10 spaces and no other rabbits they are unwilling to extend their deadline!
Please comment if you can help and want to pledge funds to any rescue willing to pull. Any adopter, Napa Bunnies will vaccinate them against RHDV2 for free.
If you want to foster, please email [email protected]

***UPDATE***We have confirmation from the shelter that the first 5 with a kill date of 02/26 have all been pulled by a rescue. Additionally, 1 out of the other 6 has been tagged by a rescue which leaves us still with 5***
I am going to make a separate post for the remaining buns so there is no confusion and because Instagram has an image limit of 10.

says they have no more room for any incoming rabbits, and 11 rabbits are now at risk to be euthanized at this high-kill shelter. The first 5 must be adopted or rescued by 8am on 02/26/25, the others by 8am on 03/05/25.
They are not currently listed under the adoptable animals but rather under transfer preferred, but the shelter representative stated they may be adopted.
Please follow the link for more information about each rabbit: https://www.contracosta.ca.gov/7889/Transfer-Preferred-Other-Animals

Napa Bunny Colony Rescue Operation

We are a group of concerned individuals involved in a large-scale rabbit rescue in a residential area of Napa. We seek to gather up every single rabbit from the colony, get them spayed or neutered, and find them safe and loving indoor homes.

We have some donated supplies and we are going to contribute not only our time, but also our money to help these bunnies. We will need to cover the ongoing cost of feeding and caring for the rabbits, medical expenses including spay and neutering fees. Please support our efforts by making a donation today https://www.gofundme.com/f/napa-bunny-colony-rescue-operation

Note: when you make a donation through GoFundMe, there is an option for the GFM "tip" that can be changed to zero percent. You don't have to tip them!

The cost of this rescue operation will exceed $30,000. This is a volunteer operation and any money that you donate is going 100% towards rescuing the bunnies.
