My wife and I recently went through one of the most agonizing events of our lives: the euthanasia of our beloved dog, Murphy. THE BENIFITS OF WALKING YOUR DOG.....
How does walking keep my dog healthy?
Walking your dog is a simple task that has a positive impact on many aspects of overall health, such as:
Weight and Body Condition:
Obesity is a major health issue, but barring medical complications, it has a reasonable solution: burn more calories than consumed. Regular exercise, like walking, is a good way to burn those excess calories and keep the weight off.
Joint Health:
Immobility is another common health problem. Joints, even old ones, need to work. People and pets get stiff when sedentary for too long, and keeping joints in motion improves their function. Not to mention, mobility also helps keep muscles active, preventing them from weakening. Just like with people, a sedentary lifestyle—especially in older dogs—leads to muscle loss and stiff and painful joints. Daily exercise helps to maintain muscle tone as well as keep tendons and ligaments loose.
Digestive and Urinary Health:
Regular walking helps regulate the digestive tract. Some dogs, like some people, prefer to “go” on a schedule and providing your dog with routine trips outdoors prevents constipation. Also, when urine sits in the bladder for long periods of time, bladder infections are more likely to occur, so regular emptying keeps this part of the anatomy happy as well.
There are plenty of benefits to walking that go beyond physical health, including:
Mental Health:
Dogs do not like to be bored and if you give them something constructive to do, like taking a walk, they may be less likely to do something destructive, like chewing the couch. Walking exercises the mind as well as the body. Watching wildlife, exploring new paths, seeing other people with their pets, and so on, are great mental stimulation for your dog that he just cannot get in the same fenced area all the time. Walking also releases excess energy and helps dogs sleep better at night.
Emotional Health:
You are the centre of your dog’s universe and he craves your attention. What better way to spend quality time with your dog than taking a walk? Spending one-on-one time with your dog will deepen your bond and help deter annoying, attention-seeking behaviours such as excessive barking or whining.
Personal Health:
Many people need outside motivation to work out and may depend on an exercise buddy to get them off the couch. What happens when your exercise partner gets stuck at work or stuck in traffic or has another commitment? Your dog is only committed to one thing - you! That makes them the perfect exercise partner. He is always available and willing to accompany you on a walk.
Destroying the House
Behavioural problems, and especially destructive behaviour, are commonly a result of not getting enough exercise. Many dogs, especially high-energy breeds, become bored and frustrated if they don’t get enough outdoor exercise and mental stimulation. If your dog is starting to chew things around the house, scratch or dig at doors, or raid the kitchen or trash can, the problem might be not enough exercise!
Hyperactivity
Dogs that are hyperactive and those that show poor manners are often exercise-deficient. This is commonly seen in young dogs and dogs from energetic breeds. A personality trait of these pooches is that they have so much drive and energy! If their energy is not used in a productive fashion, it will be used for naughtiness. Many of these dogs can get themselves into trouble, eat and destroy things they shouldn’t, and have the attention span of a gnat. These pooches are begging for interactive exercise time.
Excessive Barking or Whining
Dogs that are restless and bark or whine a lot could be just telling you that they need more exercise. Once again, these dogs feel the need to be doing something—and they know that what they want likely lies outdoors. On top of this, they want to be doing it with their people! So they are communicating in the best way they know—by barking or whining. Regular outdoor play periods are often the cure to this behaviour issue.
PET NANNY can keep the routine exercise and mental stimulation interesting by walking in different areas that provide visual and stimulating interest for your dog. Playing a game of fetch or a romp in the park, street walks amongst other people and dogs, beach visits, river swims and farm walks, one on one walks or in a group. We can cater to your senior dog as well. The goal is to make exercise and mental stimulation a priority for your dog. It will not take long for your dog to get used to the routine and wait with anticipation for us to take them out.

Helping one of our clients that doesn't have transport get their cat in to the vet yesterday for her shoots.

One of my clients dogs is out of action until she gets better... Only took a couple days for the hot spot to rapidly grow from a fifty cent piece size to what you will see in the photo attached. Nala was in a lot of pain and couldn't walk and needed vet care.
HOT SPOTS
Acute moist dermatitis, also known as 'hot spots' are painful, moist, reddened areas of infected skin that can appear suddenly and spread very rapidly, particularly in hot, humid conditions. Hot and humid environments can also make pets more likely to develop hot spots due to trapped heat or humidity at the skin surface where the bacteria reside. The lesion should be disinfected with a chlorhexidine solution that kills bacteria. Topical antibiotics, desiccating sprays, and soothing reagents will be more effective when applied to a clipped, clean skin surface. Oral antibiotics and steroids/antihistamines may also be in order for serious hot spots. Removing the fur around the spot allows the spot to dry out because it reduces humidity from building up. This makes a hostile environment for bad bacteria. Be very careful when shaving your dog - the spot is itchy and sore, and your dog might be jumpy and make it difficult for you to safely remove their fur.
