“It’s easier to criticize than to create” -Linda Rappoport
For those of us who have the privilege to compete, it may be hard to fathom how many hours of labor, expertise and passion goes into running an Event.
Do you know that some of our volunteers will take vacations days from their regular jobs to set up a course, or scribe our dressage tests? Have you ever considered the countless hours it takes for officials to become certified?
The tone is set by prominent coaches, trainers and competitors. I genuinely hope that part of everyone’s training includes cultivating gratitude and respect for the volunteers and officials and for the passion they continue to breathe into the sport.
Island 22 is, to my knowledge, is the only venue in BC that allows schooling year-round and hosts organizations like Pony Club and the Fraser Valley Hunt. For this, I am profoundly grateful.
I’m willing to venture that all our ‘big riders’ cut their teeth at Island 22, navigating the slippery spots for the last 35 years and are better riders because of it. Just as CVES can be too hard or MREC can be too deep, Eventers are accustomed to dealing with variable weather and footing. We embrace these challenges because, let’s face it, pure dressage or show jumping doesn’t quite offer the same thrill.
What I really want to say is THANK YOU.
Thank you to the volunteers who were still setting up the stadium course after cross country finished.
Thank you to the officials who made our weekend as safe as possible.
Thank you to the sponsors who generously donate prizes year after year.
If any of this resonated with you, please tag a volunteer, official or sponsor as a small acknowledgement of their hard work and support.
