Even when the sun has gone in on hot days, the tarmac stays hot for quite some time.

Paws are not as hardy as you may think, especially if your dog has grassy walks! A pavement that is hot enough can cause thermal burns.

With the back of your hand, check whether you can stay touching the pavement for at least 7 seconds. If not, it is definitely too hot.

- Brushing daily if possible.
- Checking mouth weekly for breaks, fractures, plaque.
- Monitoring and limiting dog’s usage of harder chews.
- If in doubt, checking whether you can make an indentation with your thumb nail in any potential chew or toy.

🤔 just like humans, our dogs go through an adolescent stage😑

Many trainers is now offer specific classes, adolescent dogs . It’s important that as owners are well prepared for this stage. Here are some things to look out for.

🐾Anxiety or nervousness. Female dogs can be especially impacted during their seasons. These can cause behaviour changes, such as anxiety or nervousness, being overly friendly with other dogs, nesting and peeing more than usual.

🐾 Territorial behaviour. Another change seen in both males and female dogs is becoming more protective and territorial. For example, guarding things or places around the home or reacting and barking at things that didn't use to bother them.

🐾 Social behaviour. Social maturity also plays a part in your dog's behaviour at this age. Some forms of aggression between dogs only appear as they mature. Your dog may become less social and enjoy the company of other dogs less as they grow up.

If you have a dog who is muzzled in the heat, here are a few double checks for you.
🐾 the dog must be able to fully open their mouth to paint effectively. Panting is their only way to regulate their temperature.
🐾 ensure the dog can drink water through the muzzle.
Photos below are taken from The Muzzle Movement and show a lightweight, roomy muzzle fit.

Reminder to never leave your dogs overnight.

I can’t believe I’m actually having to write this.

Read for yourself. And this isn’t a one-off emergency (still not ok), this is something this owner does often!

The thing that has made me post this is that some of the members of this house and pet sitters group who have voted ‘yes’ to it being acceptable to leave dogs alone for 2 days with just puppy mats and a sack of food down, actually advertise pet sitting services. Some free, some paid!

This is NEVER okay.

PLEASE, if you need a sitter, look for fully insured, DBS-checked, trusted and recommended local sitters.

Arrange a meet and greet where the sitter will come to your home for a face-to-face discussion about the care of your pets.

Ask questions, including how long they may be left alone for? What their insurance covers? If they can provide references? Are they animal first aid trained? Do they have good reviews?

Please be careful. Unfortunately, the pet care industry is massively unregulated. Do your research and keep your pets happy and healthy.

☀️All pet parents should consider the use of sunscreen.☀️

White dogs with short hair, like Bull Terriers, Pit Bulls, Dalmatians, French Bulldogs, Greyhounds, and Boxers, are more susceptible to sunburn than dogs with darker skin and thicker coats.

It’s very important to use sunscreen especially formulated for dogs, like this Doggy Sun Stick. This insures that even if they ingest some of the cream through licking it won’t cause them any harm.

Locally, it’s sold in Pet Stop Codsall for only £6.99.

Dog Attacks - Respecting Each Others Space!

Yesterday we were back to back in classes, and our first class was really distressing to myself, my staff and my clients!

As we made our way back to our cars after a fantastic session of Gun Dog Training, we were hounded by an off lead Jack Russell.

I presumed the JR was with a dog walker due to that when the JR started to circle each of my clients (the dog walker carried on walking the other three labs to her car - to get them into the car as quickly as possible and had no recall with the JR and it also looked like she was finding it hard to manage all four)

Even after multiple times of shouting, please recall your dog!

I managed to lure the JR with some food away from my clients dogs, but the JR lost interest and went back to circling my clients dogs.

As I followed, and tried to remain as calm as possible - the JR suddenly attacked one of my clients puppies in the face.

Shouting clearly to the dog Walker, your dog just bit one of my dogs, get your dog now!

The Dog Walker then eventually managed to grab the JR and profusely apologised.

As the Dog Walker walked away with the JR in her arms I checked my clients dogs over throughly and fortunately no puncture or markings from the bite.

The reason for this post is that I appreciate that ‘accidents’ do happen and I am grateful that the Dog Walker apologised… however… if this bite had been to another one of the dogs that we were training in the class, that had already been attacked (5 times previously in his short lifespan) and is now reactive… then it might of been a different story if the bite had happened to him.

We are all grateful that we live in Shropshire and have access to some fantastic fields, walks and dog friendly locations.

But it is polite and also it keeps everyone’s dogs safe if you just put your dog on lead if you can’t recall when you see another dog.

We can all live in harmony with each other, if we just LEARN TO RESPECT EACH OTHER’S SPACE!

☑️ If you see someone training - put your dog on lead
☑️ If you see another dog on lead - put your dog on a lead
☑️ If you see a family having a picnic - put your dog on lead

This is just basic common courtesy, and if your dog loves to meet other dogs - then great (so do my three goldens) but keep your own dog safe and also the public, as not every dog or person wants a dog bounding up to them in their face.

As owners, let’s respect each other that little bit more, and don’t become that owner that shouts:

⚫️ It’s ok he is friendly
⚫️ Nor the owner that apologises when their dog has bitten another dog
⚫️ Nor the owner that upsets a child because their dog has ran up to them and they’re already fearful of dogs!

Be kind, and be respectful of each other and if we can all do that, then we can decrease the risk of dog fights, decrease the risk of redirected bites and also help dogs develop into fantastic well balanced and trained dogs with boundaries! 💙

Prevention is better than cure. DON’T TAKE THE RISK. Dogs DIE of heat stroke. ‼️
