It's May and the garden is really coming alive! I'm trying some new things this year and seeing what will work.

First, I'm using soaker hoses for irrigation. I think I'll still have to hand water on really hot days, but so far it's working out nicely. Also, since my amazing husband got me a greenhouse, I'm now able to start seeds early. The greenhouse works so good it's already too warm! So we just ordered a solar fan to keep it cool.

I've got a ton of garlic and onions growing. This year I also installed two arches for climbers (cucumbers, nasturtiums, pumpkins, squashes, peas) made of hog paneling and t-bars. We like them so much we're going to get another one. I find I need stakes more than I anticipated, but thankfully my neighbor Chuck is generous with letting me cut from his backyard bamboos so I'm always in supply of stakes, which the dahlia bed will need.

It's going to be a great garden this year and I'm looking forward to expanding it into an all year garden with hoop houses and other garden extenders. This book I'm reading shows how to keep harvesting every season. It takes a bit of planning, but so far I'll have summer crops and then in August start seeding for a winter crop, of which there are many cool and cold weather vegetable varieties to plant. Seems there is a trick to knowing which vegetable to plant for which seasonal temperature. In the old days I just planted everything all at once in May like everyone else. Now I'm pickier and more selective and I'm using my space (and time!) wiser.

I wish I knew the names for all these dahlia varieties! Nonetheless they are breathtaking. The cabbages are coming along nicely as well as the squash. It's gonna be a good fall harvest!

Here's a peek at some of the garden residents this afternoon! The girls are enjoying some fresh picked blueberries (it's a frenzy!). The bees are drunkenly collecting dahlia pollen and Bailey is channeling her inner panther.

It's all harvesting, canning and eating over here at our urban homestead. This is my first year canning and it's way easier than I thought. I've canned blueberries for mid winter ice cream topping, yum! As I make tomato sauce, I've canned a little for future pizza and pasta nights... But it's so good I've only canned one jar so far and we've eaten the rest!

Today's harvest and dinner: swiss chard, zucchini (of course) and dandelion greens. Yes, dandelions! Which are actually an herb, high in vitamins A, C and K, and have many health benefits such as improving vision, regulating blood sugar and promoting wound healing. Who knew? I'm going to saute them up in butter.

Simple homemade and homegrown pickles, naturally fermented with raw milk whey, salt and herb de provence. Yum! I save the whey after I make raw milk yogurt. Two days in this heat and then pickles are done! Along with day 2 of the sourdough starter from home milled organic wheat. It's best to use whole berries and grind them at home. This cuts down on lose of nutrients through oxidization, which most packaged flours are harshly subject to.

Too many cucumbers to count from the garden this morning. But I'm ready for pickling with some left over whey out of the freezer! The apples were an accident, one of the branches from the apple tree broke off. Boo. I might dry them? Blackberries and plums from my weekly bike forage around town!
