- Reposted : Members of anti-animal cruelty group Humane Society International, (HSI) recently secured a ban on the selling and killing of dogs from a slaughterhouse in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, and brought them to a sanctuary in a triumph for animals worldwide. This rescue operation was conducted after Tomohon City Secretary, Mr. Edwin Roring, announced a permanent halt to animal slaughter and trade in the city.
Tomohon Extreme Market had previously been touted as a tourist attraction and listed on one of the world’s tourism websites as a destination that also sells various animal meats. Moreover, in the area, reports say that eating dog and cat meat is an ancestral tradition of the Minahasan people, the largest ethnic group in North Sulawesi.
In case y’all didn’t know yet, HSI and groups in Indonesia operating under the Dog Meat Free Indonesia are also campaigning to end the trade in live dogs for human consumption, as rabies can spread to humans during slaughter or through contact with infected meat.
