The bear dog, also known as Amphicyon, was a prehistoric creature that exhibited a combination of bear and dog features. Despite sharing some similarities with bears, such as a heavy body and flat-footed stance, and with dogs, such as long legs and a snout, bear dogs did not belong to the scientific families of either bears (Ursidae) or dogs (Canidae).

Instead, these fascinating creatures were classified in the Caniformia suborder, often referred to as the "dog-like" suborder. Modern animals within the Caniformia suborder include wolves, foxes, dogs, bears, sea lions, and weasels. This places bear dogs as distant relatives or cousins to their namesakes. It is important to note that bear dogs should not be confused with the contemporary dog breed known as the Karelian bear dog.

Bear dogs could be divided into two main types. Some, like Borocyon robustum, had long limbs that were well-suited for running, resembling modern wolves. On the other hand, species like Amphicyon longiramus were stockier and bore a closer resemblance to modern bears, as reported by the Florida Museum of Natural History.

In terms of size, bear dogs displayed a wide range, much like modern dogs and bears. They could weigh as little as a few pounds or exceed a massive 1,000 lbs. (450 kilograms). It is believed that early bear dogs were quite small, akin to the size of Chihuahuas. However, over time, they evolved into larger creatures, with sizeable variations. This evolutionary shift had both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, becoming larger enabled them to tackle bigger prey and climb higher in the food chain. Conversely, their increased size required more sustenance and led to slower reproduction rates.

The robustness of bear dogs suggests that they were capable of preying upon various types of mammals and other animals. Fortunately, these creatures went extinct before humans appeared on the scene.

Bear dogs first emerged in Eurasia during the Eocene and Oligocene epochs, dating back approximately 55.8 million to 23 million years ago. These time periods were characterized by warm weather and dense vegetation, with global temperatures hovering around 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 Celsius) during the Eocene period. Doss

Our shooting team raises awareness around veterans and service dogs, brings back that feeling of community and accountability and showcases the talent of some of our R22 family members!
Thank you for an amazing event. Shout out to Garland and his service dog Sabot, killing it at their first team event.

The museum would like to celebrate the Olympics taking place in Paris this summer. Our Social Media Team wondered exactly what would happen if Military Working Dogs were able to take part in this worldwide sporting event. So, we thought we’d hold a mirror up to some specific competitions and ceremonies to see what they’d look like through the lens of a military working dog team.

We hope you enjoy the light-hearted nature of these posts and will share them with your friends.

Bodies are meant to move. To have precise control, to hold the body steady requires physicality and focus. These are the aspects of a fantastic shot. Now image, adding stealth and movement to that precision. Then you have military shooting. Add a K9 to the mix and you have an agile K9 team.
